Vijay takes the WGC Bridgestone InvitationalSunday 8/3, 7:21 PM CT
Vijay Singh entered this week's WGC Bridgestone Invitational listed as one of our favorites to win, touting a rise to prominence at this course in the past with recent rounds that suggested his health would not be an issue. Today, he made good, working as the most consistent golfer on the course to post a total score of 270, ten strokes under par and good for a one-stroke victory over Lee Westwood and Stuart Appleby.

Our View: Singh nearly threw away the win by missing three putts inside eight feet on the back nine at Firestone. However, he held true on the final hole and wrapped the win, ending an 0-for-34 drought on the PGA Tour. Singh had not won on U.S. soil since the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March 2007, and twice this year he blew 54-hole leads at Pebble Beach and Bay Hill. But he finally got it done, winning for the 32nd time on the PGA TOUR.
Appleby rallies but falls just a bit right of the markSunday 8/3, 7:16 PM CT
Stuart Appleby came into this week's WGC Bridgestone Invitational as the only player to compete in all 29 of these World Golf Championships events since they began in 1999. Today he showed why, putting on an impressive show to register an impressive -2 (68) on the day during the final round of competition, coming just one stroke shy of leader Vijay Singh at -9 for the tourney. He finishes tied for 2nd with Lee Westwood.

Our View: Appleby was out of the hunt until a 30-foot birdie putt on the 16th green, a 3-foot birdie converted on the 17th and an 18-foot birdie attempt on the final hole that just stayed right of the cup. This is a positive sign for fantasy owners as Appleby has struggled more often than not in recent weeks. Today he showed moxy and seems likely to finish strong on the 2008 season. Keep him in mind at the PGA Championship next week.
Westwood's putting leaves him one stroke backSunday 8/3, 7:12 PM CT
Lee Westwood was in the mix until the end, rallying from a five-shot deficit with 11 holes to play to get within one of the lead. However, he came up short on a 7-foot birdie putt on the 17th, and his 15-foot birdie putt from the fringe on the 18th to tie for the lead was left all the way. He closed with a 69, shooting -9 (271) for the tourney to finish one stroke off the lead, tied for 2nd with Stuart Appleby.

Our View: Westwood has been a force on the Euro Tour all season long and has shown great promise in making a break through on the PGA circuit. He could have moved up to a ranking of 4th in the world with this tourney, what would have been his first U.S. title in 10 years
Mickelson falls on the back nineSunday 8/3, 7:07 PM CT
As the final round of this week's WGC Bridgestone Invitational came to a close, it was painful for fantasy owners to once again lay witness to another Phil Mickelson collapse. Lefty played bogey-free through the first 14 holes to build a one-shot lead, then threw it away by making three bogeys from the bunker on the final four holes to shoot 70, two shots off the lead.

Our View: Mickelson has failed to achieve the lofty goals the top competitor not named Tiger should be aiming for. For fantasy owners, it is becoming difficult to put faith in Lefty when you are looking for that one elite golfer that will rise above the others. Thus far, he's not getting it done, and while the finishes are respectable, a win against a top field should be the expectation.
