Andrei Kostitsyn put in one goal and one assist to help lead the Montreal Canadiens to a 5-3 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers.

Our View: Kostitsyn tallied his first points of the season for the Canadiens. He was a former top-ten selection, and has enough skill to put in over 20 goals on the year.
Biron allows four goalsMonday 10/13, 8:59 PM CT
Philly goalie Martin Biron let in four goals on just 26 shots as he took his second loss, 5-3 to Montreal.

Our View: Biron has had a miserable start to the season, having given up eight goals on 36 shots. If this continues, Antero Niittymaki will be the starting goalie soon enough.

Montreal defenseman Roman Hamrlik scored a goal, assisted on another and blocked three shots in the Canadiens 5-3 win over the Flyers.

Our View: Hamrlik has two goals on the season, and is now a +4. He also blocked three shots, for good measure.

Red Wings defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom put the biscuit in the basket for his first goal of the year in the team's 3-1 win over Carolina.

Our View: Lidstrom got nearly 25 minutes of ice time, and the future Hall of Famer was a +1 on the evening.

Carolina goalie Cam Ward allowed two goals, and though he got the loss, he did not perform badly, stopping 33 of 35 shots in the Hurricanes 3-1 loss to Detroit.

Our View: Ward wasn't great in his first win, allowing four goals on 29 shots, as things obviously have a way of evening out.
Conklin is solidMonday 10/13, 8:49 PM CT
Ty Conklin only allowed one goal on 28 shots in the Red Wings' 3-1 win over Carolina.

Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist was fantastic, stopping 26-of-27 shots for the team in their 4-1 win over the Devils.

Ryan Hollweg just came back from a two-game suspension, and he may be facing another after the Toronto tough guy received a five-minute major and game misconduct for a boarding penalty, according to HockeyBuzz.com.

Sabres defenseman Craig Rivet had an assist, was a +2, and accumulated 25 PIM with a five-minute fighting major and two 10-minute misconducts in Buffalo's 7-1 win over the Islanders.

Our View: Fantasy owners who play with PIM will surely love that stat line. Rivet had 30 assists and over 100 PIM for San Jose a year ago.
Pominville tallies three pointsMonday 10/13, 4:08 PM CT
Jason Pominville had a goal and two assists for Buffalo in the Sabres' 7-1 thrashing of the Islanders.

Our View: Pominville scored his first points of the season on Monday. He was a solid fantasy option coming into the year and will continue to be with performances like this.
MacDonald lit upMonday 10/13, 4:05 PM CT
Islanders goalie Joey MacDonald had a rough day in net, allowing six goals on 34 shots in the Sabres' 7-1 win.

Our View: MacDonald had played well this year before this unfortunate experience. He will resume his backup duties to Rick DiPietro as soon as the latter is healthy enough to play.

Jack Johnson has landed on the IR with his shoulder injury, according to the AP.

Our View: The 21-year-old defenseman is expected to miss 2-3 months. He was not expected to make a solid fantasy impact right away this season, and won't be missed while he is out.
Antropov registers two assists Monday 10/13, 3:11 PM CT
Nik Antropov registered a pair of assists in Monday's 5-4 loss to the Blues.

Cherepanov was drafted by the Rangers in the first round (17th overall) in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft and had a bright future ahead of him before today's tragedy.
Sbisa promoted Monday 10/13, 2:16 PM CT
Luca Sbisa performed so well in his NHL debut Saturday, that he has already been promoted to the Flyers' second defensive pairing, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. Coach John Stevens said, "We really didn't know what to expect from young Sbisa in a regular-season game, but he can probably handle more minutes as we move along. We initially thought he'd get spot duty as a fifth, sixth defenseman, but he's shown an ability to play a little more."

Our View: The 18-year-old defenseman has displayed tremendous quickness, and will receive more ice time following his promotion, starting tonight at home against the Canadiens. Sbisa is worth targeting on the waiver wire as a flier.
Kings claim Quincey off waivers Monday 10/13, 12:49 PM CT
The Kings have claimed Kyle Quincey off waivers from the Red Wings, according to the Detroit News.

Our View: The 23-year-old defenseman did not register any points over six games with Detroit in 2007. He could develop into an enforcer with the Kings, but will likely only be useful for penalty minutes.

Andrew Alberts has been shipped from Boston to Philadelphia in exchange for forward Ned Lukacevic and a fourth round pick in the 2009 NHL draft, according to the Providence Journal. The 2009 fourth round pick becomes a 2009 third round pick if the Flyers resign Alberts at the end of his contract which expires on June 30, 2009.

Our View: Alberts played in 181 games for the Bruins, registering one goal, 18 assists and 231 penalty minutes. His fantasy value will not improve with Philadelphia this season.
Boyle recalled by Kings Monday 10/13, 10:45 AM CT
Brian Boyle has been recalled from the minors, according to the LA Times.

Our View: He registered one shot in his first game against San Jose. The 23-year-old center has upside, but is not yet worth owning in standard leagues.
Sobotka could be recalled soon Monday 10/13, 10:30 AM CT
Vladimir Sobotka could be recalled from AHL Providence soon with Chuck Kobasew on the shelf with a broken ankle, according to the Boston Herald.

Our View: Sobotka only scored one goal and six assists over 48 games as a rookie with Boston in 2007, and won't likely be productive enough to consider for fantasy rosters in standard leagues if promoted.
Raycroft to work once a week Monday 10/13, 10:24 AM CT
Coach Tony Granato stated that Andrew Raycroft will start between the pipes around once a week, according to the Denver Post.

Our View: If so, Raycroft will not play enough to merit fantasy consideration, but could always earn more playing time if he performs well or if starter Peter Budaj struggles.
Higgins to remain out Monday 10/13, 10:19 AM CT
Christopher Higgins will remain out of the Canadiens' lineup Monday as he continues to recover from a groin injury, according to the Montreal Gazette.

Our View: Higgins is yet to play this season, but shall remain stashed on fantasy rosters, as he scored 27 goals and 25 assists with Montreal in 2007.
Finger out for Monday Monday 10/13, 10:01 AM CT

Johnson injured Monday 10/13, 9:50 AM CT
Jack Johnson sustained an upper body injury during Sunday's game, according to the LA Times.

Our View: The young defenseman told reporters that he was fine, but the angle of his left arm and his care in holding it tightly against his body suggested otherwise. The team is yet to determine the severity of the injury.
Bieksa undergoes MRI Monday 10/13, 9:46 AM CT
Kevin Bieksa underwent an MRI Sunday after injuring his knee on Saturday, according to the Vancouver Sun.

Our View: The results of the test are yet to be disclosed. His ailing knee was stiff and sore with some swelling. The club is hopeful that he only sustained a sprain, which would allow him to return within the next two weeks.
Shanahan still waiting for contract Monday 10/13, 9:30 AM CT
Brendan Shanahan is still waiting for a contract offer from the Rangers, according to the NY Post.

Our View: The 39-year-old vet continues to work out and skate on his own at the Rangers' practice rink. There is no sense of urgency to sign him, as the Rangers are off to a 4-0 start.

Nick Tarnasky is close to making his 2008 debut with the Predators after being dealt from the Lightning at the end of September, according to the Tennessean.

Our View: He might be ready as early as Wednesday at Dallas. He is recovering from a broken thumb, and while he can hold a stick fine, the team has been holding him out to prevent him from aggravating the injury in a fight.
MacDonald projected for third startMonday 10/13, 9:20 AM CT
Joey MacDonald is expected to make his third start in goal Monday, according to Newsday.

Our View: MacDonald holds a favorable 2.00 goals-against-average and a .927 save percentage over his first two starts, with a 1-1 record. Rick DiPietro has served as his backup the last two games, and is denying the news that his surgically repaired knee is swelling. We will keep you posted on the situation among the Islanders' goaltenders.
Halpern still rehabbing knee Monday 10/13, 9:14 AM CT
Jeff Halpern is still rehabbing his surgically repaired right knee (torn ACL and MCL), according to the Tampa Tribune. He underwent the procedure in June, and when asked when he may return to the ice, he said, "Maybe by mid-December, cautiously a little later than that. It's still a long way away but I'm happy right now where everything is."

Our View: Halpern has been skating five days a week for up to an hour at a time, and has been working with team trainers. Halpern scored 20 goals last season, but should remain left on the waiver wire for the time being.
Hatcher not close to returning Monday 10/13, 8:55 AM CT
Derian Hatcher is not close to returning to the Flyers' lineup, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. He is recovering from a knee injury and is yet to resume skating.

Our View: Even when he does return, he will hold little to no fantasy value while fighting for minutes among a deep and talented group of defensemen.
O'Sullivan plays Sunday Monday 10/13, 8:35 AM CT
Patrick O'Sullivan made his 2008 season debut with the Kings Sunday, according to the LA Times.

Our View: He saw around 20 minutes of ice time, and was reportedly rusty and out of rhythm, as he just signed his contract last Tuesday and missed training camp. He will be a solid depth player for fantasy owners once he gets back up to speed. He scored 53 points with the Kings as an NHL sophomore in 2007.
Nolan leaves practice early Monday 10/13, 7:55 AM CT
Owen Nolan left Sunday's practice early for an undisclosed reason, according to the Star Tribune.

Marek Zidlicky will not make Minnesota's upcoming three-game road trip to Atlanta, Florida and Tampa Bay, according to the Star Tribune. He has been out since injuring his right ankle in a game September 26 at Chicago.

Our View: Zidlicky was told it would be two weeks minimum from the time of the injury before he'd be back. There remains no exact timetable for his return. Erik Reitz and Tomas Mojzis will continue to be defensive options for Minnesota for the short term while he is out.
Peca to discuss suspension Monday 10/13, 7:40 AM CT
Michael Peca will meet with the NHL this week to discuss his indefinite suspension for making contact with an official, according to the Columbus Dispatch.

Our View: NHL referees Greg Kimmerly and Mike Hasenfratz contend that Peca inadvertently struck a linesman with his stick on the follow-through after he slammed it against the boards on his way to the penalty box during the second period of Friday's 5-4 overtime win over the Stars. Peca denies his stick hit the linesman. Under rule 41.3, Peca will be suspended a minimum of 10 games unless his appeal is successful.

Jonas Junland is making favorable progress in his recovery from a shoulder injury, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He said, "My shoulder feels a lot stronger. I can't feel the soreness on the ice anymore. That's good news for me."

Our View: This is encouraging news for the rookie defenseman, but the Blues don't plan on inserting him into the lineup this week.
Oshie moves to new line Monday 10/13, 7:17 AM CT
Lee Stempniak's knee injury will force him to miss a second straight game Monday, and it will cause the Blues to adjust their forward combinations again, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. During Sunday's practice, T.J. Oshie was moved to the left wing on a line with center Andy McDonald and right winger Brad Boyes. Also, center Jay McClement will play in the middle of left winger Keith Tkachuk and right winger David Backes.

Our View: Those lines finished together in Saturday's 5-2 loss to the Islanders and will start together today against the Maple Leafs. Oshie brings toughness to the line, but is yet to register any points over two games. He needs time to adjust to the NHL, and holds little to no fantasy value for right now.

McIver scratched Monday 10/13, 7:03 AM CT
Nathan McIver was a healthy scratch for Sunday's game, according to the Orange County Register. He practiced for the first time Saturday since being claimed off waivers by the Kings, and wasn't deemed ready for action with his new club yet.

Our View: The young defenseman is a punishing hitter, but is a stay-at-home defender, and won't hold much fantasy value in Anaheim.
May scratched Monday 10/13, 7:00 AM CT
Brad May was a healthy scratch for Sunday's game, according to the Orange County Register.

Our View: May has recovered from a facial injury sustained around two weeks ago. He should return to the ice at some point during the week.
