NEWSBREAKERS NHL
Picard dealt to Ottawa Friday 8/29, 8:33 PM CT
Alexandre Picard was dealt from Tampa Bay to Ottawa in exchange for fellow defenseman Andrej Meszaros, according to TSN. Filip Kuba was sent to Ottawa in the deal as well.

Our View: Picard only scored three goals and three assists (with 10 penalty minutes) over 24 games in the NHL last season, and will be hard-pressed to see consistent ice time among a solid group of defensemen in Ottawa.
Kuba heads to Ottawa Friday 8/29, 8:27 PM CT
Filip Kuba has been traded from the Lightning to the Senators in exchange for Andrej Meszaros, according to TSN. Alexandre Picard was shipped to Ottawa in the deal as well.

Our View: The defenseman scored six goals and 25 assists over 75 games in his final campaign with Tampa Bay in 2007-08, and should remain active on the power play in Ottawa.
Meszaros dealt to Lightning Friday 8/29, 8:23 PM CT
Andrej Meszaros has been dealt from the Senators to the Lightning in exchange for defensemen Filip Kuba and Alexandre Picard, as well as the Sharks' first round pick that was previously acquired in the Dan Boyle deal, according to TSN.

Our View: Sources add that Meszaros is expected to sign a six-year contract with the Lightning averaging $4 million a season. Six of his nine goals in 2007-08 came on the power play, and should help the Lightning in that area.
Roy will have jersey retiredFriday 8/29, 11:30 AM CT
Goaltender Patrick Roy is going to have his No. 33 jersey retired by the Montreal Canadiens, according to TSN.com. He has already had his jersey retired once, in 2003 by the Colorado Avalanche.

Our View: Roy led Montreal to two Stanley Cups and is one of the greatest goalies in the long history of the NHL, amassing 551 total wins.
Jackets not interested in RichardsonFriday 8/29, 10:44 AM CT
Despite rumors to the contrary, the Columbus Blue Jackets do not seem to be interested in bringing 39-year-old free agent defenseman Luke Richardson to the team, according to HockeyBuzz.com.

Our View: Richardson is a stay-at-home defenseman who tallied just nine points last season. Whether he plays this season or not, his fantasy value remains the same: zero.
Selanne, retire or play?Friday 8/29, 9:31 AM CT
Teemu Selanne is still undecided whether or not to play or to retire this year, according to Sporting News Today. Ducks general manager Brian Burke hopes to talk with Selanne soon.

Our View: This is the same type of saga that the Ducks went through last year with Selanne. After missing much of the season Selanne signed with the Ducks and played in 26 games, though those 26 games were very productive. Selanne netted 12 goals and had 11 assists.
Forsberg skatingFriday 8/29, 9:26 AM CT
Peter Forsberg has been doing some skating lately but will not come back unless his ailing foot is right, according to Sporting News Today.

Our View: A Swedish newspaper reported that Forsberg would not be able to come back until at least after Christmas.
Sundin still mullingFriday 8/29, 8:42 AM CT
The news out of the Mats Sundin camp just keeps on coming. Now, Sundin might not make his decision until after the regular season has began, according to Sun Media. "Right now we are not putting any pressure on him because he has to get that feeling he wants to play," Barry said. "Right now, he is no closer."

Our View: It will be interesting to see if any of the interested teams will drop out of the race for Sundin now that a decision to play or to retire is too close.
Meszaros on the moveFriday 8/29, 8:35 AM CT
Andrej Meszaros was rumored to have a signed a contact in the excess of $5 million with other NHL team, but as of now no formal papers have been filed with the NHL, according to Sun Media. The Tampa Bay Lightning said that they would pursue Meszaros if the Senators did not trade him to the Bolts.

Our View: Based on the rumored salary and if it is the Lightning, the Senators would receive a first, second and third-round picks.
