Flacco signs 5-year dealWednesday 7/16, 9:38 PM CT
Updating an earlier report, Joe Flacco signed a 5-year deal for $30 million as the Ravens quarterback of the future, according to Pro Football Talk. The deal contains $8.75 million in guaranteed dollars.

Our View: Flacco will have to compete with Troy Smith and Kyle Boller for the starting gig, but at least he will avoid the fate of other young quarterbacks like JaMarcus Russell who often hold out and miss developmental time.
Ocho Cinco running in straight lineWednesday 7/16, 9:00 PM CT
Chad Johnson, who had arthroscopic surgery on his ankle on June 18th, has begun to run in a straight line, though he is still unable to make any cuts, according to the Bengals Official Site. "My ankle wouldn't be able to take the pounding yet," Johnson said. "I'll be OK. I'm not worried. This is a marathon, not a sprint."

Our View: Johnson is falling out of the top-10 amongst wide receivers drafted in early ADP returns, and as such represents a tremendous potential value if he can return to health and keep his mouth shut long enough to contribute on the field.
Paymah convicted of DUIWednesday 7/16, 8:51 PM CT
DB Karl Paymah has been found guilty by a jury of his peers and has been convicted of a DUI, according to the Denver Post.

Our View: Paymah will be sentenced on September 16th and he also faces possible penalty from the NFL as well. When will one of these guys do the smart thing and just hire a personal driver so that they can get drunk all they want but remain safe?
Vikings charged with tamperingWednesday 7/16, 6:09 PM CT
In the never ending saga of Brett Favre, the latest report is that the Packers have accused the Vikings of tampering with Favre, according to Fox Sports. The Vikings deny the charges which stem from a conversation the Vikings OC Darrell Bevell, a former assistant with the Packers, and Favre had.

Our View: The Packers have filed a formal charge with the league, and the Vikings are waiting on the league to call on them to give the organization a chance to respond to the charge.

CB Dwight Lowery, the Jets fifth round selection in the 2008 NFL Entry Draft, agreed to a deal with the Jets on Wednesday though terms were not announced, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Lowery will most likely battle for a nickel back role this season after playing some safety in college.

Free agent CB Dexter Reid will be suspended for the first four games of the upcoming season for violating the terms of the league's substance abuse policy, according to Pro Football Weekly.

Our View: Reid hasn't played in an NFL game since 2006.
Brooks to have playing time cutWednesday 7/16, 5:03 PM CT
Derrick Brooks will have his playing time reduced in the coming season, but after 14 years the team will not push him to hang up his cleats this season, according to Pro Football Weekly.

Our View: The report stated that Brooks will be welcomed this season in a reduced role, but the team hopes that he might consider hanging up his cleats after this season, though he still has two years left on his contract. At least he won't be cut loose unceremoniously as former star Simeon Rice was last year.
Rachal signed by 49ersWednesday 7/16, 4:01 PM CT
The Niners have agreed to contract terms with second-round pick offensive lineman Chilo Rachal. Terms of the deal were undisclosed, reports profootball.com.

The Denver Broncos have signed seventh-round pick fullback Peyton Hillis, although terms were not discolsed, reports the Rocky Mountain News.

Our View: Hillis totaled 2,624 career all-purpose yards and 23 touchdowns as a three-year starter for the University of Arkansas. He now has a chance to battle Cecil Sapp for the starting fullback role.
Favre won't accept backup roleWednesday 7/16, 1:44 PM CT
ESPN.com reports that "If Brett Favre is really going to force a showdown with the Green Bay Packers, it won't happen right away, his agent told Chris Mortensen." In the report Favre's agent, James "Bus" Cook, said we [he and Farve] have until Week 6 to file for reinstatement, and that Favre will not play backup in Green Bay.

Our View: The news just keeps pouring in, and the situation changes like the weather here in Missouri.. every 10 minutes.
McCown's hand injury healingWednesday 7/16, 1:40 PM CT
The Miami Herald and beat writer Armando Salguero are reporting that the Josh McCown right hand injury actually happened two weeks ago. The report notes that Salguero was told the wound is healing nicely and McCown should be ready for the start of training camp practices July 26th.

Our View: The Dolphins are aware of the accident and are not worried about it because they believe it is not serious. The veteran is currently the favorite to begin the season as the 'Phins No. 1 signal-caller.
Favre reportedly courted by BucsWednesday 7/16, 1:34 PM CT
According to the Tampa Tribune, the latest news on the Brett Favre front is that the Bucs are courting the retired quarterback and that general manager Bruce Allen recently dined with Favre. "I think the people at Fleming's can tell you that's absolutely not true,'' Allen told The Tampa Tribune on Tuesday.

Our View: Talk of Favre playing for the Bucs has been prevalent for days, but Favre said himself during an interview broadcast on Fox News on Monday that he sees a trade being a "way-out-there possibility.''
Manning could miss preseasonWednesday 7/16, 1:29 PM CT
The IndyStar.com is reporting that Peyton Manning could miss the Colts' five preseason games. However, the team believes he will be ready for the September 7, regular-season opener, against the Chicago Bears. "That's our expectation," team president Bill Polian said Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Bengals team website, with Tuesday's deadline gone and no long-term deal for franchise player Stacy Andrews, the team is believed to be talking to the agent for left guard Andrew Whitworth about parameters for an extension.

Our View: Domata Peko was extended last month and it's now believed thatWhitworth has become a solid starter and worthy of a new deal.
Spikes holding out for more cashWednesday 7/16, 12:24 PM CT
A handful of teams have made Takeo Spikes offers, but the veteran wants more money, according to the Sacramento Bee. It appears that Spikes is willing to wait it out and hope a team in need of linebacking help eventually gives him what he wants.

Our View: The 31-year-old is clearly past his prime, but it is a bit surprising that he hasn't caught on somewhere yet.
Johnston signedWednesday 7/16, 12:17 PM CT
Seventh-round pick Brian Johnston and the Chiefs have agreed to terms on a three-year contract, according to the Kansas City Star.

Our View: Johnston will attempt to win a backup spot on the defensive line but could be practice squad-bound.
Robinson inkedWednesday 7/16, 12:01 PM CT
The Chiefs have agreed to terms on a three-year contract with sixth-round pick wide receiver Kevin Robinson , according to the Kansas City Star.

Our View: Robinson will compete for a roster spot but won't be making a dent on any fantasy rosters this year.
Baas back soonWednesday 7/16, 11:24 AM CT
David Baas should be fully recovered from his torn pectoral tendon by the start of the regular season, according to the Sacramento Bee.

Our View: Although Baas is returning, his starting job is in jeopardy after the 49ers drafted G Chilo Rachel out of USC with their second pick.
Jacobs waiting on a raiseWednesday 7/16, 11:13 AM CT
Right now it looks like Brandon Jacobs will not be getting a contract extension before training camp opens on July 24. Although there is no deadline in place, both sides are still working to bridge the gap between what Jacobs wants and what the Giants are willing to pay, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View: The Giants don't doubt Jacobs' ability to produce, but the running back's injury concerns are likely what is holding the club back from giving him a big payday.
Charges dropped against HenryWednesday 7/16, 10:54 AM CT
Prosecutors have dropped the assault charge filed against former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry, clearing the way for him to apply for reinstatement by the NFL, according to the AP.

Our View: Henry has all-world talent but hasn't been able to stay out of trouble and on the field long enough to display it. Only time will tell if any team is brave enough to give this troubled star another shot.
Jackson the unequivocal starterWednesday 7/16, 10:26 AM CT
With the Favre saga looming over the NFL, Vikings coach Brad Childress wants to make it clear that Tarvaris Jackson is the man. Childress told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, "I just think he's right where he needs to be in terms of being a third-year quarterback... He understands what it means to play an NFL season as a starter with all eyes on him, dissecting everything."

Our View: Jackson went 8-4 as a starter last season with a 58 percent completion percentage for 1,911 yards and nine touchdowns with 11 interceptions.
Flacco deal is imminentWednesday 7/16, 10:08 AM CT
A source told ProFootball.com that a deal between the Ravens and Joe Flacco is "imminent." Flacco was the 18th pick in the draft.

Our View: Flacco will compete with Troy Smith and Kyle Boller for the starting job, but he's likely to hold the clipboard for a while. He is, however, the quarterback of the future.
Jolly could face 20 years in prisonWednesday 7/16, 9:00 AM CT
Johnny Jolly could face up to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine if convicted of possessing at least 200 grams of codeine, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette. It is not known if prosecutors will pursue charges of intent to distribute.

Our View: Don't expect Jolly to lace 'em up this year for the Cheeseheads, or likely for anyone else for that matter.
Grant won't report without long-term dealWednesday 7/16, 8:53 AM CT
Ryan Grant won't sign the minimum tender of $370,000 for a second-year player and won't report to training camp until he has a long-term contract, his agent, Alan Herman, told the Green Bay Press-Gazette. Herman said he and the Packers have had substantive talks this offseason but haven't talked for about three weeks.

Our View: With the team preoccupied with that Favre guy, Grant has been put on the back burner. We expect the two sides to get a deal done and Grant to report to camp on time.
Favre to petition for reinstatementWednesday 7/16, 8:48 AM CT
Brett Favre is expected to petition NFL commissioner Roger Goodell for reinstatement to the Packers' roster soon, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette. He is on the Packers' reserve/retired list, and by NFL rules, has to ask the commissioner in writing for reinstatement to the team.

Our View: If Favre petitions and receives reinstatement, the Packers would have to add him to the 80-man roster or release him. GM Ted Thompson has said he's already ruled out releasing Favre, so the presumption is that he'd put Favre on the roster and try to trade him.
Jones addition won't diminish Forte's roleWednesday 7/16, 7:35 AM CT
The addition of Kevin Jones is not expected to diminish the role of second-round draft pick Matt Forte, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Forte is still expected to be the lead back, with Jones helping out in a complementary role.

Our View: We're not sure if we believe the Sun-Times on this or not. Jones could begin the year on the PUP list, but if he's healthy, expect him to have an integral role in the offense.
Harrison's knee much betterWednesday 7/16, 7:28 AM CT
Marvin Harrison's knee is much better, and the veteran could be cleared to practice at the beginning of training camp, according to ESPN.com' John Clayton. The receiver might not do much in preseason games, but he could be available each practice.

Our View: Good news for Harrison owners, though he's far from out of the woods. We will be monitoring him closely in training camp.
