Rookie Arrington looking at practice squadSaturday 7/12, 11:37 PM CT
Beat writers from New Orleans believe rookie wideout Adrian Arrington is likely to start his NFL career as a member of the Saints practice squad, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

Our View: Arrington has impressed coaches, but they have a plethora of riches on the depth chart at the position and are likely to be forced to bring Arrington along slowly as a result. Injuries may change the situation, but for now, bet on the talented rookie to start off the active roster.
DE Jolly arrested on drug chargesSaturday 7/12, 11:32 PM CT
Green Bay defensive end Johnny Jolly has been arrested on felony drug charges in Houston, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View: Jolly was found to be carrying at least 200 grams of codeine on July 8th, according to a criminal complaint filed by the Harris County District Attorney's Office. He's free on $10,000 bail, according to court records. Jolly, a former Forest Brook High School star, played at Texas A&M University before being selected by the Packers in the 2006 NFL draft.
Miami looking at TEs to blockSaturday 7/12, 7:15 PM CT
With pressing issues along the offensive line, especially at guard, sources in Miami suggest the team is going to rely on twin-TE alignments, according to Pro Football Weekly. In fact, PFW reports two tight ends might end up being the default offensive formation, and they will be used primarily as blockers to help mask those shortcomings on the offensive line.

Our View: This is a major bit of news for fantasy owners who were pondering the value of both David Martin and Anthony Fasano. It appears the Fins will be ill equipped to use them as primary targets, a major consideration for those who might have been viewing these candidates as potential sleepers.
Brown pushing for starting jobSaturday 7/12, 5:52 PM CT
Reports out of Houston suggest top rookie Duane Brown could push veteran Ephraim Salaam for the starting job, an intriguing position battle that will take form at training camp this season, according to ProFootballWeekly.com.

Our View: Salaam is lauded for his veteran leadership and savvy at the tackle position, but the Texans are enamored with Brown's speed and voracity. The Texans have been more than happy to put youthful commodities in line for positions of prominence, especially on defense. The success of players such as Dunta Robinson, Mario Williams, and Amobi Okoye shows this coaching staff can mentor Brown along as quickly as possible, and thus we have a defensive position battle to watch as training camp approaches. Granted, he's playing on the offensive line and the bulk of the youthful success has been on defense, but the Texans showcased strong progress in advancing this unit last season. Brown may be the next brick in that foundation.
Favre looking for Panthers, Fins to take interestSaturday 7/12, 4:53 PM CT
The headlines just keep coming on embattled passer Brett Favre , the latest reportingt Favre and his agent are putting full focus on enticing the Miami Dolphins and Carolina Panthers into making potential offers to obtain his services, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Our View: A client of James "Bus" Cook, Favre's agent, recently told a friend that Miami and Carolina were the teams that were Favre's most likely landing place, and probably the only way he would know that is if discussions had already taken place with those teams. If Favre submits his reinstatement letter to the NFL office, the Packers will begin offering him up for a trade. It's possible they'll give Cook permission to negotiate with other teams, but Thompson will put his top two lieutenants, directors of football operations Reggie McKenzie and John Schneider, on the case and tell them to find the best deal possible. We'll continue to bring updates as they become available.
Jones' father claims drugs belonged to othersSaturday 7/12, 4:48 PM CT
The father of recently-arrested Jacksonville receiver Matt Jones has told reporters that the drugs found in his possession were not his, according to KNWA.

Our View: Steve Jones, released a statement to an Arkansas TV station in which he says the drugs that police found did not belong to his son, stating the drugs were in his "vicinity" but not in his possession. Jones' father also notes his son and lawyer will be issuing statements in the near future, but they hope the public and the Jaguars will reserve judgement until Jones gets to report his side of the story. We'll keep you posted as news comes forth on this debacle.
Cards, Dansby watching time click awaySaturday 7/12, 4:25 PM CT
As time moves on, the chances of a new long-term deal for Arizona linebacker Karlos Dansby seem to disipate, according to Pro Football Weekly.

Our View: The deadline to come to such an agreement before the franchise tag designation placed on Dansby takes hold for the season comes on July 15th, and with several weeks of rumors that this deal was in the works with no contract signed to date, it seems the two sides are unlikely to get it done. If that holds true, Dansby will be granted a one-year deal to stay in 'Zona for the averaged salaries of the top five players in the league at his position, and the potential to leave next offseason becomes a reality. Sources close to the team suggest GM Rod Graves is willing to give Dansby a strong deal in terms of incentive-based statistics and achievements, but he has balked at the suggestions for multiple years at $9 million per. We'll keep you posted, but the current status of the relationship seems likey to stay intact until the 15th, and beyond.
Broncos had no knowledge Henry failed testSaturday 7/12, 4:18 PM CT
The Denver Broncos released running back Travis Henry in June before they found out that he was facing a one-year suspension for another failed drug test, according to the Denver Post.

Our View: Per a report from Mike Klis, an unnamed team official notes the Broncos had no knowledge of a failed test, but instead dumped Henry after he missed league-mandated treatment sessions. He went on to suggest coach Mike Shanahan didn't care for his decision to skip the team's OTAs as well, thus the decision to release Henry was based on those events rather than knowledge of a failed drug test. Klis reports that in addition to testing positive in May, Henry missed three drug tests after winning his appeal of a positive test last year. The league reserves the right to consider a missed test to be a positive test. With that in mind, it is fair to say his tenure in the NFL has likey come to an end.
Favre invited back as backupSaturday 7/12, 4:13 PM CT
The ongoing saga of the not-so-retired savior of Green Bay continues to come forth, the latest report stating the Packers have informed Brett Favre that he will not be granted his unconditional release and is more than welcome to return to the Packers... as the team's backup quarterback, according to ESPN.com.

Our View: Clearly the team has no desire to see their future Hall of Fame representative end his career with division rival Minnesota or Chicago, thus the desire to deny (at least in initial reactions) his request for release without condition only makes sense. However, the invite to return as the team's backup is clearly a statement designed to display a hard-nosed stance that the Packers will be sticking to their guns and retaining Favre's rights. Of course, everything has a price, but the tag to make a deal for Favre right now is likely to be rather steep. We'll keep you posted as this saga progresses.
Rodgers is the Packers' starter Saturday 7/12, 3:10 PM CT
Packers' GM Ted Thompson stated that Aaron Rodgers is the Packers' starting quarterback, and Brett Favre will have to hold the clipboard if he is on the team this season, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. Thompson added, "We have to go with what's real. We don't know what the options are right now. We'll talk about it internally. It's all guess work. This is a very difficult spot we're in. It's a very volatile situation and we don't have all the answers yet. We have moved forward with Rodgers. So we'll see where it goes."

Our View: The Packers previously stated Favre will not be released, but they would consider a trade. As of now, Rodgers is slated to start the season opener against the Vikings.
Favre won't be released? Saturday 7/12, 10:33 AM CT
Sources close to Brett Favre believe that the future Hall of Famer will not be released by the Packers under any circumstance, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Our View: A trade is still possible, but if a deal is not worked out the club will have to decide what to do with Favre. The team won't release him, namely in fear he would be scooped up by a rival that needs a strong quarterback, like Minnesota.
Jags ink Williams Saturday 7/12, 9:45 AM CT
Fifth-round linebacker Thomas Williams (USC) has inked a four-year deal with the Jaguars, according to the Florida Times Union. He will receive base salaries of $295,000, $385,000, $470,000 and $555,000.

Our View: Williams is an intelligent linebacker with good instincts, but is not a great athlete and will likely just rank as a solid backup over his career.
Brooks signs with Redskins Saturday 7/12, 9:15 AM CT
Sixth-round punter Durant Brooks (Georgia Tech) has signed a deal with the Redskins, according to the Canadian Press. Specific terms were not disclosed.

Our View: Brooks was the only punter drafted in 2008, and will compete with Derrick Frost for the starting job.
Redskins ink Kelly Saturday 7/12, 9:12 AM CT
The Redskins have inked second-round pick Malcolm Kelly (Oklahoma) to a four-year deal worth $3.36 million, according to the Canadian Press.

Our View: Kelly will provide the Redskins with a bit target at 6-4 200 pounds, and he also excels while running after the catch. He is signed on time, and could make a fantasy impact as a rookie.
Jets wants Clemens at QB Saturday 7/12, 8:25 AM CT
The NY Post reports that the Jets are hoping Kellen Clemens beats out Chad Pennington for the starting quarterback job. The team is in a youth movement and want to justify their selection of Clemens in the second round three years ago. The team is also said to not be interested in Brett Favre.

Our View: Clemens will be the better choice under center over Pennington, but won't be a solid choice for fantasy owners, especially when you consider the bulk of proven signal callers to choose from.
Johnson could spark Cowboys D? Saturday 7/12, 7:59 AM CT
Tank Johnson has reportedly been the most improved member of the Cowboys since the end of last season, and the staff has raved about his progress, according to Pro Football Weekly. He is not a great fit as a nosetackle in the 3-4, but he understands the scheme much better and could push his way into receiving the bulk of the snaps this season.

Our View: He should easily surpass the two sacks he reached with the club in 2007, and could challenge his career-best mark of five, which he set with the Bears in 2005.
Steelers sign MundySaturday 7/12, 7:04 AM CT
Sixth-round safety Ryan Mundy (West Virginia) has signed a three-year deal with the Steelers, according to Scout.com. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Our View: His potential at safety is limited, but he could carve out a role on special teams.
Steelers sign Humpal Saturday 7/12, 7:01 AM CT
Sixth-round linebacker Mike Humpal (Iowa) has signed a three-year deal with the Steelers, according to Scout.com. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Our View: Humpal should fit well in the Steelers' 3-4 system, and will serve as a backup and special teams performer as a rookie.
