NEWSBREAKERS NBA
Mutombo won't play for minimumThursday 7/31, 11:19 PM CT
Dikembe Mutombo would probably not play for the Rockets this season if all they offered him was the veteran's minimum, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View: Mutombo is a nice reserve to have for defensive purposes, but he obviously holds no fantasy value.
Williams in talks with Israeli teamThursday 7/31, 8:26 PM CT
Point guard Jason Williams is in talks with Maccabi Tel Aviv to join their team, which already has former NBA players like Marcus Fizer on it, according to TrueHoop.

Our View: Maccabi Tel Aviv has had success in the Euroleague, which apparently is part of the draw for Williams. That, along with the fact that the team not only gives players housing and a car, but they pay their taxes as well.
Skinner signs with ClippersThursday 7/31, 6:18 PM CT
Brian Skinner signed a free agent contract with the Los Angeles Clippers, the team who originally drafted him in 1998, according to the AP.

Our View: Skinner is solely a bench player and offers no value in fantasy basketball.
Williams signs with SixersThursday 7/31, 6:15 PM CT
Lou Williams has signed a five-year deal to remain with the Philadelphia 76ers, according to The Sports Network.

Our View: Williams was a second-round pick out of high school for the Sixers. He averaged 11.5 points per game along with 2.1 rebounds and 3.2 assists. He is a nice role player whose minutes could increase with time.
Weems has surgeryThursday 7/31, 4:52 PM CT
Nuggets guard Sonny Weems underwent surgery to repair a sports hernia today, according to The Sports Network.

Our View: Weems was drafted in the second round of the 2008 draft by the Bulls and was subsequently dealt to Denver. He will be good to go for training camp and will compete for a backup spot.
Curry waivedThursday 7/31, 4:49 PM CT
Guard JamesOn Curry was waived by the Bulls today, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: A second-round pick in 2007, Curry played mostly in the NBADL last season and did not take the court for the Bulls.
Artest is representing. Deal in jeopardy?Thursday 7/31, 10:00 AM CT
The Ron Artest deal could be undone by the NBA's resident bad boy. In response to Yao Ming's concerns about Artest's past, Ron-Ron retaliated according to the Sacramento Bee. "I understand what Yao said, but I'm still ghetto," said Artest, who will earn $7.4 million next season and be a free agent next summer. "That's not going to change. I'm never going to change my culture. Yao has played with a lot of black players, but I don't think he's ever played with a black player that really represents his culture as much as I represent my culture. Once Yao Ming gets to know me, he'll understand what I'm about. If you go back to the brawl, that's a culture issue right there. Somebody was disrespecting me, so he's got to understand where I'm coming from. People that know me know that Ron Artest never changed." The deal cannot be completed until August 14 because of the nature of Donte Greene's contract (another player in the deal).

Our View: Welcome back, Ron Artest. From representing, to speaking in the third person, to defending his mind-boggling actions in the Detroit brawl, Artest is clearly reinvigorated now that he appears to be leaving Sac-town. Could the lunacy also be attributed to the fact that he canned his agent/muzzle earlier this summer? If Yao feels the need to respond, this could get ugly enough for the Rockets to pull out of the deal. We're certain Artest will not let Yao get the final word in.
James returns to actionThursday 7/31, 9:51 AM CT
The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that LeBron James scored 20 points and was a defensive force today in his exhibition debut, helping the U.S. Olympic basketball team beat Turkey, 114-82, in its first game in China.

Our View: LeBron had been recovering from a mild ankle sprain and it appears he is back. He was 8-of-9 from the field and finished with six rebounds, five steals and four assists in 23 minutes, while sitting out the fourth quarter.
Wade objects to naysayersThursday 7/31, 8:50 AM CT
The Sun-Sentinel reports that Dwyane Wade is angry about those who have questioned his fitness, debate his value to the U.S. team and equate the Heat's drop in the standings to a supposed decline in his ability at age 26. "That's going to be like that probably all year, for a while, just that anger, that focus of getting back to total respect," he said by phone before joining his Olympic teammates at practice in Macau, China. "Any doubt that people have in their mind about you as a player, you want to erase it. Just like it was when I first came in the league, I played angry. So it's the same kind of feeling on the court."

Our View: Wade, who scored 20 against Team Canada last week, said his health should be a non-issue, be it with the national team or the Heat. "I've proven that I've put in the work," he said. "I don't know what more I can say with my words. The only thing I can show is with my play." Well, Dwyane, we still need to see it. It's not so much questioning your ability as your durability. According to medical records you have a balky left knee and a wimpy shoulder. According to your scouting report, you rely as much as any player in the league on getting your points at the free-throw line. How do you get there? Driving the lane and getting hammered. We would love to see some reliable perimeter shooting before declaring you a worthy second round fantasy selection.
