Smith not finding interst in NBA marketFriday 7/18, 11:30 PM CT
Restricted free-agent guard J.R. Smith has told local reporters that he has not received any offer sheets from NBA teams and the Nuggets have not put forth any offer other than the qualifying one-year agreement for $3.04 million, according to the Rocky Mountain News.

Our View: It was once believed that Smith would be a coveted commodity and would draw interest from several teams. It now appears the value is inflated and most teams, having either spent their dollars or choosing to save for down the road, are no longer willing to commit to Smith at this time. If that changes or he finally decides to sign the one-year qualifier with Denver, we'll let you know.
Lakers won't match offer for TuriafFriday 7/18, 9:18 PM CT
As expected, the Lakers have decided not to match the offer made by the Golden State Warriors to forward Ronny Turiaf , according to ESPN.com.

Our View: Golden State offered Turiaf a four-year, $17 million contract offer, which would have boosted Los Angeles' payroll past the luxury tax. Turiaf averaged 6.6 points and 3.9 rebounds in 78 games with the Western Conference champions last year, starting 21 games. The three-year veteran also blocks shots and plays strong low-post defense, two of Golden State's biggest problem areas.
Miles signs offer sheet with OKCFriday 7/18, 8:36 PM CT
The new franchise in Okalhoma City (actually, the relocated Seattle franchise in OKC) has signed C.J. Miles to an offer sheet, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Oklahoma city general manager Sam Presti announced the move on Friday. Under terms of the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement, Miles’ current team, the Utah Jazz, has seven days to match the multiyear offer (a move the Jazz are unlikely to make, upset with Miles' decisions to miss summer league for each of the last two seasons with struggles to maintain fitness tabbed as a negative aspect of his time in the NBA to date).
Sixers close to extension with IguodalaFriday 7/18, 8:05 PM CT
With Elton Brand in the mix and the team looking to make a serious stride towards progress in the Eastern Conference, the Sixers are rumored to be seeking a new contract extension with restricted free agent Andre Iguodala , and an offer may be sitting on the table as we speak, according to Yahoo Sports.

Our View: Sixers' president/general manager Eddie Stefanski met Tuesday in Las Vegas with Rob Pelinka, the agent for Iguodala. Reached via cell phone, Stefanski would not say whether he had tendered an offer for Iguodala, but reports indicate that offer is being considered and the team may have him wrapped early this week. We'll keep you posted.
Walton goes under the knifeFriday 7/18, 7:30 PM CT
Lakers forward Luke Walton has undergone successful surgery to remove bone spurs and scar tissue as well as to clean cartilage debris in his right ankle, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: The team said the operation took about and hour and was performed by Dr. David Thordarson at the University of Southern California. Walton's rehabilitation is expected to take about six weeks and he's expected to make a full recovery by the start of training camp.
Jazz, Williams sign 3-year contract extensionFriday 7/18, 6:22 PM CT
The Utah Jazz and point guard Deron Williams have reached an agreement on a three-year contract extension, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Williams, who still had one year left on the rookie contract he signed after the Jazz picked him third overall in the 2005 NBA draft, signed a three-year deal with a one year option. Terms of the contract were not released. Williams has career averages of 15.3 points, 8.1 assists and 2.9 rebounds while appearing in a total of 242 of a possible 246 career games, including all 82 during the 2007-08 regular season.
Mavericks reject Artest for Howard dealFriday 7/18, 4:45 PM CT
The Dallas Mavericks have rejected a deal that would have sent Josh Howard to the Sacramento Kings in exchange for Ron Artest, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Our View: Howard has his own baggage, especially after his recent admission of marijuana use, but Artest has heavier baggage, and the Mavericks may not want to deal with that.
Durant to have jersey retired at UTFriday 7/18, 4:18 PM CT
Kevin Durant will have his jersey retired at the University of Texas, according to ESPN.com.

Our View: Durant's only season at Texas was a special one, though some may argue that he doesn't deserve the honor after only playing one year.
Dragic to remain in SpainFriday 7/18, 4:13 PM CT
Goran Dragic will continue to play in Europe instead of signing with the Phoenix Suns, according to the East Valley Tribune. He was the Suns second-round pick in the draft.

Our View: Dragic may eventually be the replacement for Steve Nash, but the transition doesn't look like it will begin this year.
Sixers ink Speights Friday 7/18, 3:11 PM CT
The Sixers have inked first-round pick Marreese Speights, according to the AP. Terms of the contract were not disclosed, but he will make $1,285,500 next season and $1,381,900 in 2009-10, according to the NBA rookie pay scale.

Our View: Speights has strong upside while coming out of Florida University as the 16th overall pick in the draft, and is expected to provide solid depth to the Sixers' frontcourt as a rookie. He has potential to play a favorable amount of minutes per game, and could rank as a late-round sleeper for next season.
Delfino joins BC Khimki Friday 7/18, 1:13 PM CT
Carlos Delfino left the NBA as he has inked a three-year deal with BC Khimki of the Euroleague, according to Eurocupbasketball.com.

Our View: A few NBA clubs were interested in him, such as the Pistons, but he opted to return to Europe.
Arenas mocks Jefferson Friday 7/18, 1:01 PM CT
Gilbert Arenas decided to mock Richard Jefferson for landing in Milwaukee with the Bucks, according to NBA.com. Arenas said, "HAHAHA! Oh man, now that is funny. When I heard that, I started laughing. Oh man, did I start laughing. You know why? Because every player hates Milwaukee. Nobody wants to live in Milwaukee. I’m sorry, Milwaukee, to come down hard on you, but no one in the NBA wants to play in Milwaukee."

Our View: Arenas is truly a character.
Rodriguez working on accuracy Friday 7/18, 9:50 AM CT
Sergio Rodriguez has been working on improving his accuracy on his perimeter shooting with coach John Townsend, according to the Oregonian. He is enjoying solid results so far, as Townsend remarked, "He's really in a groove right now."

Our View: This is good news, as Rodriguez only shot 35 percent from the field last season, but still doesn't look to have a solid role with the Blazers next season.
Yao scores 11 points Friday 7/18, 8:44 AM CT
Yao Ming, who is trying to bounce back from a stress fracture in his left foot, scored 11 points in 12 minutes of play with the Chinese national team in an Olympic tuneup Thursday, according to the Houston Chronicle. Yao helped his club to a 96-72 win over the Serbian squad in the four-team Stankovic Cup tournament, and he walked off the court after the game without speaking to reporters.

Our View: Yao returned to light training late last month after X-rays and an MRI scan taken in Houston showed his recovery was on schedule, at about 80 percent healed. Such injuries typically take a full year to heal.
