Clippers targeting Smith?Tuesday 7/8, 10:27 PM CT
Now that Elton Brand is apparently headed to Philly and Corey Maggette is on his way to Golden State, the Clippers may use their excess cap space to make a run at restricted free agent Josh Smith.

Our View: The Atlanta Hawks have said that they will match any offer for Smith, but it's doubtful they expected the Clippers to get in the mix. They are expected to throw a ton of cash at Smith within a matter of hours.
Maggette to the WarriorsTuesday 7/8, 9:59 PM CT
Corey Maggette will sign with the Warriors on Wednesday, according to ESPN.com.

Our View: Don Nelson is still loading up on scorers. This move likely pushes the young phenom, Monta Ellis, to point guard and puts Maggette on the wing with Stephen Jackson. We know Maggette can score in bunches (22.1 ppg last season) and he will get that opportunity next season with Golden State.
Carney dealt for nothingTuesday 7/8, 9:55 PM CT
Rodney Carney has been dealt to the Minnesota Timberwolves along with Calvin Booth and a first round pick for....nothing.

Our View: The move was made to clear salary cap space for the incoming Elton Brand. Minnesota is loaded on the wings and it is difficult to see Carney having much of a role on this team.
Brand is heading to PhillyTuesday 7/8, 9:52 PM CT
ESPN.com reports that Elton Brand has accepted a five-year deal worth an estimated $82 million to play in Philadelphia on Tuesday. The deal cannot officially be announced before midnight.

Our View: This is a big blow to the Clippers who were hoping to keep Brand while signing Baron Davis to a blockbuster deal. Brand will make the 76ers instant contenders by filling their one hole in their lineup with an All-Star. Playing alongside Andre Miller and Samuel Dalembert should increase Brand's fantasy production.
Beasley dominates in summer leagueTuesday 7/8, 7:24 PM CT
Michael Beasley started off the summer league with a bang on Monday. The second overall pick poured in 28 points and added nine rebounds in under 23 minutes in the Heat's blowout of the Bulls. The Bulls defended him with much taller players such as Joakim Noah and Tyrus Thomas.

Our View: Beasley will continue to be the focus of Miami's summer league efforts. He looked relaxed and smooth and could play his way into the Heat starting lineup by opening night.
Jones to the Heat?Tuesday 7/8, 7:21 PM CT
The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports that the Miami Heat will offer James Jones a four year deal.

Our View: Jones played college ball in Miami and would welcome the chance to come back. He was one of the league's best shooters last season when he shot 44% from three and nearly 88% from the free-throw line.
Adams joins RaptorsTuesday 7/8, 6:11 PM CT
Hassan Adams has signed with the Toronto Raptors to a two-year deal.

Our View: Adams is an incredible athlete who has battled injuries the past few years. The Raptors have an aging Anthony Parker at shooting guard, so Adams will be given a shot to make the rotation this season.
Pietrus signs with MagicTuesday 7/8, 6:07 PM CT
Florida Today reports that Mickael Pietrus reached a multi-year deal with the Orlando Magic on Tuesday.

Our View: Pietrus could make a significant impact as a full time starter in the Eastern Conference. He is a top-notch defender who is lethal behind the arc. The moves devalues J.J. Redick, Courtney Lee and Keith Bogans and also likely puts an end to the Magic's pursuit of Keyon Dooling.
Arthur inks with Memphis Tuesday 7/8, 3:58 PM CT
First-round pick Darrell Arthur has inked a multi-year deal with the Grizzlies, according to the AP. Specific terms of the contract were not disclosed, but Arthur will make just over $800,000 in 2008-09 and over $2.6 million over the first three years of the contract, based on the rookie pay scale negotiated in the collective bargaining agreement.

Our View: He was originally selected 27th overall by the Hornets before being traded to the Blazers and Rockets in separate draft night deals. The Grizzlies acquired his rights from the Rockets in exchange for first-round pick Donte Green and a 2009 second-round pick. He was among the most talented players in the draft, but a possible kidney condition dropped him to the lower half of the first round.
Grizzlies sign Mayo Tuesday 7/8, 3:51 PM CT
The Grizzlies have signed first-round pick OJ Mayo, according to the AP. Exact financial terms were not disclosed, but Mayo will make over $3.2 million in his first season and over $10.4 million over three years due to the rookie pay scale negotiated in the collective bargaining agreement.

Our View: Mayo was originally selected third overall by Minnesota, but was dealt to Memphis as part of an eight player deal.
Bucks ink Alexander Tuesday 7/8, 2:29 PM CT
The Bucks have inked first-round pick (eighth overall) Joe Alexander, according to the Star Tribune. He agreed to a multi-year deal, but specific terms were not disclosed.

Our View: He should be limited to a reserve role at the start of the new season, with Richard Jefferson and Charlie Villanueva firmly planted at the two forward spots.
Maggette could land in San Antonio? Tuesday 7/8, 1:39 PM CT
Corey Maggette is said to be a top candidate to sign with the Spurs, according to the Boston Globe. Talks between Maggette and the Spurs are serious and he was previously leaning toward signing with the team, but no deal is imminent.

Our View: The Spurs are believed to have offered Maggette a multi-year deal, starting with their $5.8 million mid-level exception. The Celtics have made an offer to Maggette as well however, one he told the Boston Globe on Thursday he is seriously considering. Orlando is believed to have dropped out of the race for him.
Ajinca inks with Bobcats Tuesday 7/8, 1:05 PM CT
Alexis Ajinca has inked a deal with the Bobcats, according to the Charlotte Observer. He was the 20th overall pick of the draft, and he receives a two-year guaranteed contract, with team options for each of the following two seasons.

Our View: Signing Ajinca means Charlotte successfully released him from his pre-existing contract with the French club Hyeres-Toulon.
Bobcats sign Augustin Tuesday 7/8, 1:01 PM CT
The Bobcats have signed first-round pick (ninth overall) DJ Augustin, according to the Charlotte Observer. He receives a two-year guaranteed contract, with team options for each of the following two seasons. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Our View: He will compete with Raymond Felton for the lead role at point guard, but should ultimately win the job, despite a lack of size (6-0 180 pounds).
Sixers in race for Brand Tuesday 7/8, 11:31 AM CT
The Sixers are reportedly positioning themselves to lure Elton Brand away from the Clippers, according to ESPN. They are in the hunt, and are believed to trade away Rodney Carney and Calvin Booth to free up the money needed to make a strong offer to Brand.

Our View: The Sixers are already expecting to have at least $11 million in salary-cap space to spend when the league announces next season's cap figure to all 30 teams Tuesday night. If the Sixers can finalize a trade to unload Carney and Booth, the club could possess the financial flexibility to start a five-year offer to Brand at a first-year salary in the $15 million range.
Pierce to undergo MRI Tuesday 7/8, 10:00 AM CT
Paul Pierce plans to undergo an MRI on his ailing right knee this week, according to the Boston Herald. He said, "I’ve still got some soreness in it, so hopefully it’s nothing major where I’ll require surgery. I’m just going to get an MRI while I’m in town. I doubt if I need any surgery just based on it’s getting better and better."

Our View: Pierce doesn't expect to need surgery, but the MRI will decide for sure.
Barry on Suns' radar? Tuesday 7/8, 9:54 AM CT
Brent Barry, who opted out of his contract with the Spurs, has had discussions with the Suns, according to the East Valley Tribune. It seems unlikely Barry would walk away from a minimum contract with the Spurs to sign an identical deal with the Suns, but Phoenix does have some bench playing time to offer, and potentially more if Grant Hill has injury issues.

Our View: Barry is among the top three-point shooters in the league, but no longer holds favorable fantasy value as a bench performer.
Jefferson praises Redd Tuesday 7/8, 8:43 AM CT
Richard Jefferson was initially not pleased to be traded from the Nets to the Bucks, but he is now seemingly embracing his new club as he praised team-mate Michael Redd, according to the Boston Herald. Jefferson stated, "I think Redd is a great shooter that has the ability to get to the cup. He’s much more outside, he’s one of the best shooters I’ve ever seen. There will be a lot of eyes on us to see how well we gel. Me and Vince Carter were very similar, but me and Mike might complement each other even more."

Our View: The team wants to make Jefferson happy, so it seems less likely Redd will be traded. They will certainly form a dangerous 1-2 punch for the Bucks if Redd stays put.
