NEWSBREAKERS NASCAR
Rain cancels qualsFriday 9/5, 5:14 PM CT
Tropical Storm Hanna has canceled qualification for both the Nationwide and Cup series and the lineup will be set by the rule book. Kyle Busch will lead the field to green On Saturday night (or whenever the race gets underway).

Our View: The much anticipated debut of Joey Logano will have to wait another week, but he at least has the pole for the Nationwide Series race.
NASCAR acquires Grand AmFriday 9/5, 2:31 PM CT
Grand Am will be acquired by NASCAR holdings, making this part of the premiere racing family. Look for more crossovers from road race aces like Scott Pruett to Cup and Jimmie Johnson to Grand Am.

Our View: Ultimately this will have little effect in the future, with the exception of some additional, strong road ringers at Watkins Glen and Infineon.
Chase scenarios: 12thFriday 9/5, 1:15 PM CT
The 12th spot in the standings is much harder to predict. Clint Bowyer leads David Ragan by only 17 points and Kasey Kahne by 48. He could finish second in the race and still lose his spot.

Our View: If Ragan wins the race after leading the most laps, nothing any other driver does will matter. Conversely, he could finish three or four positions ahead of Bowyer and clinch, so this battle could come down to the last lap.
Logano wins Richmond practiceFriday 9/5, 12:06 PM CT
Joey Logano posted the fastest average speed in the one and only practice session for the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 at 118.451 during 39 circuits.

Our View: Logano is required to qualify on time this week, but that shouldn't be much of a problem. His fastest single lap was 10th best and it was set early in the session.
Gordon posts fastest lap at RichmondFriday 9/5, 12:03 PM CT
Jeff Gordon posted the single fastest lap of practice at Richmond, with a speed of 118.279 mph set late in the session.

Our View: Gordon complained about his car during long runs, but he was in the top five on the average speed chart as well. However, this team has a knack for losing the handle during the race.
GEM suing R GordonFriday 9/5, 11:00 AM CT
According to SceneDaily.com, Gillett-Evernham Motorsports is pursuing a $23.5 million lawsuit against Robby Gordon , alleging that he broke a deal that would have allowed GEM to purchase his team.

Our View: Part of the deal was that Gordon would get the same support as GEM's "most supported car in the NASCAR Sprint Cup.” Gordon is currently clinging to the top 35 in owner points, so the deal must not have played out the way he hoped.
Biffle nips shock in Richmond practiceFriday 9/5, 10:15 AM CT
Cars were on the track for less than five minutes before Greg Biffle found a little trouble. The No. 16 hit the top of a shock and lightly damaged his splitter.

Our View: This shouldn't slow Biffle any, and he was one of our dark horses early in the week after posting five consecutive top-10s in 2004 through 2006.
N'Wide: Dillon 17th in practiceFriday 9/5, 10:11 AM CT
Austin Dillon, grandson of Richard Childress, is attempting to make his debut this week and he got off to a respectable start with the 17th fastest speed in the one and only practice session for the Emerson Radio 250.

Our View: His father Mike Dillon was a mid-pack driver in the Busch series in the late 90s and early 00s with 15 top-10s in 154 starts. Austin is getting a much earlier start, however.
N'Wide: Clauson in No. 40 at RichmondFriday 9/5, 9:59 AM CT
Bryan Clauson will race in the No. 40 Chip Ganassi Racing (CGR) Nationwide car this week and for all but one of the remaining races on the 2008 schedule, according to SceneDaily.com. The one race he'll miss will be at Texas.

Our View: With Dario Franchitti heading back to the IndyCar season, Clauson will get more experience and the added seat time will allow him to make a concerted charge for Nationwide Rookie of the Year (ROTY) honors. He currently trails Landon Cassill by two points and Franchitti by one.
N'Wide: Gibbs' guys top practiceFriday 9/5, 9:58 AM CT
The Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) drivers Denny Hamlin (123.689 mph) and Joey Logano (123.276) topped the practice sheet in the one and only session for the Nationwide Series.

Our View: There is little surprise there; this organization has dominated the second series all season.
N'Wide: Leffler spins in practiceFriday 9/5, 9:18 AM CT
Jason Leffler spun near the end of Nationwide Happy Hour but did not make any contact with the wall.

Our View: "Loose is fast," as the saying goes, but the driver doesn't want to be that loose.
Chase scenarios: HamlinFriday 9/5, 9:08 AM CT
Denny Hamlin sits 11th in the standings, but if he finishes 21st or better, he will clinch his spot in the 2008 Chase.

Our View: The only time Hamlin has finished worse than that at Richmond was in the spring Crown Royal Dan Lowry 400. In that event, however, he led 381 of the first 382 laps before cutting a tire, so his fans can rest comfortably.
