NEWSBREAKERS NASCAR
N'Wide: Bliss fastest in Gateway HHFriday 7/18, 9:31 PM CT
Mike Bliss posted the fastest single lap in Happy Hour for the Missouri-Illinois Dodge Dealers 250 at Gateway International Raceway.

Our View: Bliss was only 12th fastest in the first session, but conditions in Happy Hour are much closer to what the drivers will face in the race.
N'Wide: Logano fastest in Gateway P1Friday 7/18, 7:22 PM CT
Joey Logano posted the fastest single lap in the first practice session for the Missouri-Illinois Dodge Dealers 250 with a speed of 132.704 mph.

Our View: This is Logano's first race back since Milwaukee, where he finished second. That is a similarly flat track to Gateway and the teenager is in the No. 20, so look for them to run at the front of the pack all night Saturday.
Logano frontrunner for No. 20Friday 7/18, 7:05 PM CT
Joey Logano appears to be the frontrunner for the No. 20 car, which will be vacated by Tony Stewart at the end of the season. "For me personally, Joey is a candidate for anything," Joe Gibbs said. "I think we have a total of 32 tests he's been in Cup cars. I don't think there is one incident ever where he hasn't stood out."

Our View: Ascending to Cup this quickly would seem to be a daunting task, but the teenage sensation has proven to be extremely mature during his short time on the track.
Bartelli named CMO at PettyFriday 7/18, 6:46 PM CT
Michael Bartelli has been named Chief Marketing Officer at Petty Enterprises, which field teams for Bobby Labonte and Kyle Petty.

Our View: At least Bartelli has a background in racing. He comes to the company after a stint at Millsport—a sports marketing agency—and Action Performance—makers of racing collectibles.
Hamlin fails to go the distance at ChicagoFriday 7/18, 5:17 PM CT
Denny Hamlin failed to complete all the laps at Chicagoland for the first time in six weeks. He struggled home four laps off the pace in 40th.

Our View: Hamlin is a flat track master, however, and Indy should be the perfect place for him to rebound and start another streak.
Only one failed to finish ChicagoFriday 7/18, 4:23 PM CT
Only one of the 43 starters at Chicagoland failed to be running at the end of the LifeLock.com 400. David Gilliland blew an engine only eight laps from the end of the race.

Our View: Kevin Harvick is the league leader: he has been running at the end of 63 consecutive races as well as 102 of his last 103. attempts.
Kvapil returns to IndyFriday 7/18, 3:00 PM CT
After running in the Craftsman Truck Series full time last year, Travis Kvapil will return to Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the first time since 2006.

Our View: He finished respectably that season with a 25th while running for Cal Wells and in the more powerful Robert Yates Racing Ford, he should be able to contend for a top-20.
Gordon has most flat track winsFriday 7/18, 1:58 PM CT
Jeff Gordon has the most flat track wins among active drivers with 19 victories at Indy, Pocono, New Hampshire, Phoenix and Martinsville.

Our View: Four of his wins came in the Brickyard 400—which also leads the league.
Sadler looks for consecutive flat track successFriday 7/18, 12:27 PM CT
Elliott Sadler has only three top-10s in his last 18 attempts of 2008, but one of these came on the flat track at New Hampshire two weeks ago. That snapped a 14-race streak of sub-10th-place finishes on this track type.

Our View: It will take some doing to earn another flat track top-10, so Sadler should be avoided unless he is extremely fast in practice for the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard.
N'Wide: Villeneuve to race in MontrealFriday 7/18, 11:19 AM CT
Jacques Villeneuve will race the No. 32 Braun Racing Toyota at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal—a track named after his legendary father.

Our View: He has not raced a Nationwide series car on this track, but in his first Formula 1 attempt in the 1996 Canadian Grand Prix, he finished second. This team won at Lowe's in the spring and has several runner-up finishes already in 2008.
Kenseth wins at SlingerFriday 7/18, 10:03 AM CT
It may be an off weekend for Cup, but that hasn't kept Matt Kenseth from winning a stock car race. On Tuesday, July 15th, he won the Slinger Nationals in his home state of Wisconsin.

Our View: Kenseth still has several more short track races planned this week, including an ASA event at Rusty Wallace's Iowa Speedway on Sunday.
Gibbs didn't let Stewart goFriday 7/18, 9:01 AM CT
Last week at Chicago, Joe Gibbs gave a slightly different characterization of his and Tony Stewart's separation. "First of all, we didn’t let him go," Gibbs said—rather they granted his release when it was apparent that was what he wanted.

Our View: The split still cannot be describes as acrimonious, but there could still be some strife before the end of the season.
