Smith hopeful he'll return in 2009Wednesday 11/19, 4:42 PM CT
Regan Smith is hopeful that he will return to the Cup series next year, according to SceneDaily.com, even though he has not yet been named one of the drivers in the Earnhardt Ganassi Racing stable.

Our View: Smith, along with Sam Hornish Jr., were the only two rookies to make it to the end of the season with his ride intact.
More cuts for more teamsWednesday 11/19, 11:22 AM CT
Petty Enterprises, The Wood Brothers, Bill Davis Racing and Ernie Elliott's engine shop all reduced their staffs in the two days since Sunday's season finale, according to NASCAR.com. This follows an announcement that Hall of Fame Racing has also made notable cuts.

Our View: One thing fantasy owners will notice, however, is that teams like Hendrick Motorsports and Roush Racing are not listed among those scaling back massively—although they have each made small reductions. The disparity between the haves and have-nots continues to grow.
HoF Racing cuts staffWednesday 11/19, 11:18 AM CT
Hall of Fame Racing has announced it will cut back on their staff, regardless of whether additional sponsorship can be found, according to NASCAR.com. Ken Schrader drove the No. 96 most of the season.

Our View: With the economy in shambles, belt-tightening is occurring everywhere.
Stewart gives up lead in finaleWednesday 11/19, 8:06 AM CT
Tony Stewart was forced to pit for fuel with 11 laps remaining. That ruined a "storybook ending," according to a team press release.

Our View: "We did everything we could do," said Stewart, who in 10 career starts at Homestead has five top-10 finishes. "It was awesome to be leading there with 20 laps to go and driving away from the field."
Menard ends with a whimperTuesday 11/18, 3:17 PM CT
"It wasn't the finish we had hoped for in the last race of the season," Paul Menard said in a team press release, regarding his 30th-place finish in the Ford 400. "Fuel strategy definitely played out in the end."

Our View: Now it's time to refocus and set sights on 2009. Menard will join Yates Racing, where Travis Kvapil finished seventh for the same organization in the same race.
Roush calls for gentlemen's ban on all testsTuesday 11/18, 12:21 PM CT
Jack Roush issued a challenge to his fellow car owners, that would create a gentlemen's agreement to ban all testing—not only follow NASCAR's ban of testing on sanctioned race tracks, according to NASCAR.com.

Our View: We don't see this happening. Not that the other owners aren't gentlemen, but there is simply too much on the line.
Ambrose looks beyond HomesteadTuesday 11/18, 11:41 AM CT
Despite a disappointing Homestead race that landed Marcos Ambrose outside the top 35 in owner points, the team is looking forward to the 2009 season, according to a team press release.

Our View: There is plenty of reason to be encouraged. On several occasions this year, Ambrose produced better results than the formal Rookie of the Year (ROTY) candidates.
Red Bull ends in top 35Monday 11/17, 2:18 PM CT
For the first time in their history, Red Bull Racing will go to Daytona with guaranteed starting positions for both of their cars. Brian Vickers climbed into the N0. 84 in and drove it to a 32nd-place finish, which was just enough to allow him to pass a stricken Marcos Ambrose for 35th in the points, according to SceneDaily.com.

Our View: Ironically, Scott Speed did much better in the No. 83. He qualified second and finish on the lead lap in 16th.
Smith wins ROTY honorsMonday 11/17, 1:21 PM CT
In a ho-hum season for rookies, Regan Smith had the most points and votes in the Rookie of the Year (ROTY) balloting and took top honors, according to SceneDaily.com.

Our View: Let's hope that next year's class of freshmen is a little more productive.
Smith wins final Rookie of the Race honorsSunday 11/16, 9:40 PM CT
Regan Smith won Rookie of the Race honors for the 11th time this year with his 34th-place finish, which was much less impressive in light of the fact that he was the only rookie in the race.

Our View: And: for the 11th time this year, the official rookies were beaten by a first-year driver not competing for the honors. This time Scott Speed bested Smith with a 16th-place finish.
