NEWSBREAKERS MLB
Baldelli drives in threeMonday 10/13, 7:16 PM CT
Rocco Baldelli delivered the knockout blow to Boston, hitting a three-run home run in the eighth inning to help Tampa beat Boston 9-1.

Our View: Baldelli made his first start in Game 3, and the move paid off. He drove in three runs and walked once.
Struggles continue for OrtizMonday 10/13, 7:13 PM CT
David Ortiz went hitless in four at-bats in the Red Sox 9-1 demolition at the hands of the Rays in Game 3 of the ALCS.

Our View: Ortiz is now 0-for-10 in the ALCS, and 4-for-30 in this year's playoffs. Boston will certainly need more production from Big Papi if they want to advance.
Longoria goes deepMonday 10/13, 7:09 PM CT
Evan Longoria did his part to help Tampa destroy Boston, 9-1. The rookie went 1-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored.

Our View: Three of Longoria's four hits in the series have been for extra bases, with two doubles and this home run.
Lester hit hardMonday 10/13, 7:07 PM CT
Red Sox hurler Jon Lester was hammered by the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 3 of the ALCS, allowing five runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings.

Our View: Boston manager Terry Francona set it up so Lester would be available to pitch a potential Game 7. For the Sox to win, they will have to at least go six games, so Lester may get a shot at redemption in the series.
Garza throws wellMonday 10/13, 7:05 PM CT
Matt Garza threw six innings, allowing one run on six hits and striking out five in Tampa Bay's 9-1 bludgeoning of the Red Sox.

Our View: Garza threw 116 pitches, and was clearly losing steam as he started the seventh but allowed a walk and a single. The Rays take a 2-1 series lead.
Hafner will have surgeryMonday 10/13, 6:05 PM CT
Indians DH Travis Hafner will have surgery on his aching right shoulder on Tuesday, according to the Cleveland Plain-Dealer. Dr. James Andrews will perform the operation.

Our View: Hafner had shoulder problems all year. He was horrendous for the whole season, as least in part because of that, hitting .197 in 198 at-bats. It is unknown how long the surgery will keep the slugger out.
Hughes wins awardMonday 10/13, 5:02 PM CT
Yankees righty Phil Hughes won the Arizona Fall League's Pitcher of the Week award after throwing five innings of one-hit ball in one start, according to Yankees.com.

Our View: The former wonder boy had a miserable, injury-marred season in 2008. He will attempt to right himself in the AFL before spring training next year.
Ellsbury remains in leadoff spot Monday 10/13, 12:12 PM CT
Jacoby Ellsbury will roam center field and remain in the leadoff spot in tonight's Game 3 of the ALCS against the Rays, despite going 0-for-11 (with no walks) over the first two games in the series, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: The team still has faith in the speedy rookie, who swiped 50 bases and scored 98 runs in the regular season.
Cora to start Game 3 Monday 10/13, 12:08 PM CT
Alex Cora will start at shortstop over Jed Lowrie in tonight's Game 3 of the ALCS against the Rays, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: He is batting ninth in the lineup. He has no power and declining speed, and made six errors in the regular season, with a .972 fielding percentage.
Hafner to visit specialist Monday 10/13, 11:03 AM CT
Travis Hafner will visit Dr. James Andrews in Alabama today prior to deciding on shoulder surgery, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Our View: Hafner has already been examined by at least two doctors since the end of the season to try and determine why the strength in his right shoulder has not returned to normal. He spent over three months rehabbing it on the DL during the season. Tests, including an MRI, on Hafner's shoulder have reportedly shown no serious damage to the labrum or rotator cuff. There has been speculation that Hafner could be experiencing a nerve problem in the shoulder.
