Greg Smith issued four earned runs on five hits over six innings in Wednesday's 4-3 loss to the Rays, with two walks and four strikeouts.

Rodriguez optioned Wednesday 7/23, 2:45 PM CT
Sean Rodriguez has been optioned back to Triple-A Salt Lake, according to the OC Register. The team recalled reliever Jason Bulger as the adjoining move.

Our View: Rogriguez failed to prove his worth to the Angels during his stint with the club, as he only hit .185 over 65 at-bats, with 23 strikeouts.
Bulger recalled Wednesday 7/23, 2:42 PM CT
Jason Bulger has been recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake, according to the OC Register. the Angels optioned infielder Sean Rodriguez back to Triple- A Salt Lake as the corresponding move.

Our View: Bulger was brought in to add a fresh arm to the bullpen after it worked six innings in a 3-2 win on Tuesday against the Indians. His stint with the club could be brief and he does not merit fantasy attention.
Oswalt feels fine during session Wednesday 7/23, 2:38 PM CT
Roy Oswalt, who is recovering from a left hip adductor strain, threw between 40-50 pitches during a bullpen session Wednesday, and felt fine with no issues, according to MLB.com. He felt good as he threw fastballs and changeups and he said, "I didn't throw 100 percent. I threw about 75 to 80 percent, and it feels pretty good. I'll know a lot more Friday, when I throw 100 percent and see how I feel."

Our View: Oswalt is expected to pitch on July 28 against the Reds, which will be his first start since a one-inning, 17-pitch outing on July 11. Astros' manager Cecil Cooper said Friday's scheduled bullpen session will be the determining factor in deciding if Oswalt is ready, and Oswalt said there is no reason to rush his return.
Millwood injured Wednesday 7/23, 2:09 PM CT
Kevin Millwood left Wednesday's outing in the third inning with an unknown injury, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Our View: The injury is yet to be revealed, but he did recently have some issues with his groin. We will keep you posted on his status when more details surface.
Miller to try shock wave therapy Wednesday 7/23, 2:04 PM CT
Andrew Miller is going to try shock wave therapy on his ailing right knee, hoping to speed up the healing process, according to the Miami Herald.

Our View: Miller said he could resume throwing off a mound by the weekend but won't make the trip to Chicago and doesn't expect to be ready when he is first eligible to come off the DL July 29. The team will know within four weeks if the shock therapy works.
Ramirez scratched Wednesday 7/23, 1:55 PM CT
Manny Ramirez has been scratched from Wednesday's lineup, according to the Boston Globe. Manager Terry Francona said, "He showed up this morning, I wasn't ready for that. He said his right knee hurts."

Our View: Jacoby Ellsbury will cover his spot in left field, and Sean Casey will serve as DH. Kevin Youkilis will bat cleanup in the order. We will keep you posted on Ramirez regarding his ailing knee.

Alex Cintron, who is nursing a strained left hamstring, will go on a five-game injury rehab assignment, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View: The Oriles are hopeful he could return in late July.
Bay on Oakland's radar Wednesday 7/23, 1:14 PM CT
Fox Sports indicates that Jason Bay is on the Athletics' radar and they are talking to the Pirates about acquiring him.

Our View: A trade between the two clubs is said to be unlikely however, as the Pirates are asking for more than the Athletics are willing to give.
Roberts was on Sox's radar? Wednesday 7/23, 1:08 PM CT
The Chicago White Sox reportedly were interested in acquiring Brian Roberts, according to Fox Sports. If the Sox acquired him, they would have moved Alexei Ramirez to shortstop, and would have attempted to deal Orlando Cabrera, who they talked to the Dodgers about.

Our View: The Orioles are still hanging on in the AL East race, and the club would like to keep Roberts, unless of course they are persuaded by a great deal.
Bartlett likely to be activated Thurs. Wednesday 7/23, 11:57 AM CT
Jason Bartlett is likely to be activated from the DL Thursday following his bout with a right knee sprain, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View: Bartlett is feeling good and is expected to resume his role as the starting shortstop, and regular days off may not be necessary, depending on how he does upon his return.
Posada requires surgery Wednesday 7/23, 11:52 AM CT
Jorge Posada had been told that his right labrum is deteriorating and will require surgery, but he may be able to continue his season as a first baseman or DH, according to Yankees.com. The 36-year-old Posada has experienced a weakness in his throwing shoulder all season long and has ruled out catching for the remainder of the campaign, but the injury does not affect him as much when he is hitting, and with six months of estimated rehab looming, Posada must decide if he is willing to resume playing in 2008 at the possible expense of missing time in 2009. Posada said, "It's not about me. It's about the team now. How can I help the team? That's why I'm going to go through the rehab. If I'm able to hit, I'm going to try to do that. If I'm not able to hit, I'm going to have surgery."

Our View: Posada wants to help the team, but he is only hitting .157 (3-for-19) over his last six games, with no homers or RBI.
Brewers add Gibbons Wednesday 7/23, 11:44 AM CT
The Brewers have added free agent Jay Gibbons, according to the AP. The Brewers have purchased his contract from the Atlantic League’s Long Island Ducks and will assign him to their Double-A affiliate in Huntsville, Alabama.

Our View: Gibbons was released by the Orioles in March after he batted .189 with no home runs and four RBI in 16 games in spring training. If he gets called up to the Brewers, he won't likely get enough at-bats to garner fantasy consideration.
Freel undergoes surgery Wednesday 7/23, 11:39 AM CT
Ryan Freel underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a torn hamstring tendon behind his right knee, according to the AP.

Our View: The 50-minute procedure was performed by Reds' medical director Dr. Timothy Kremchek and will keep him sidelined for four to six weeks.
Ledezma called up Wednesday 7/23, 11:30 AM CT
Wilfredo Ledezma has been called up from Triple-A Portland, according to the AP.

Our View: Ledezma allowed 25 earned runs, 30 walks, and 43 hits over 44.2 innings in his previous stint with the Padres this season, and is not expected to make an impact this time around.

Josh Fogg is expected to miss his next start due to the split lip he sustained Tuesday during batting practice, according to the AP. The wound required 30 stitches.

Our View: Fogg was scheduled to take the hill Friday, but Edinson Volquez will cover his spot instead. With Thursday off, Volquez will still be pitching on his usual four days rest.
Gordon could throw off mound soon Wednesday 7/23, 11:04 AM CT
Tom Gordon, who is recovering from right elbow inflammation, could begin to throw off a mound within seven to ten days, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Our View: The team is yet to set a timetable as to when he may be able to return.
Benson doubtful Wednesday 7/23, 11:01 AM CT
Phillies' GM Pat Gillick commented that Kris Benson is doubtful to pitch for the Phillies this season, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Our View: The Phillies signed him to a minor league deal in February with hopes of him working in the starting rotation in May, but he did not bounce back favorably in his recovery to repair a torn right rotator cuff.
Hanrahan new closer Wednesday 7/23, 10:45 AM CT
As expected, Joel Hanrahan has been tabbed as the Nationals' closer following the departure of Jon Rauch to Arizona, according to the Washington Post. Skipper Manny Acta said, "He's been our most dominant guy out of our bullpen and has the best numbers, so he'll get the crack at it."

Our View: Hanrahan was nothing special as a starting pitcher last season, but has excelled as a reliever in 2008, as Acta stated, and he is worth targeting in mixed-leagues.
Carpenter slated for another rehab startWednesday 7/23, 10:45 AM CT
Chris Carpenter, coming back from Tommy John surgery, is slated to make his second rehab start on Friday, this time for Triple-A Memphis, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Carpenter tossed four scoreless innings Sunday for Double-A Springfield, throwing 61 pitches. He said he expects his target to be at least 70 on Friday.

Our View: Not surprisingly, Carp's command was off Sunday, as he walked four. Hopefully he'll be able to improve on Friday. The Cards still hope he can be ready in early August.
Votto is fine Wednesday 7/23, 10:37 AM CT
Joey Votto was out of the Reds' lineup Tuesday, but wasn't injured in his collision with Francisco Cordero in the ninth inning of Monday's game, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. Manager Dusty Baker just wanted to get Javier Valentin some at-bats at first base.

Our View: So fantasy owners should not be concerned with Votto's absence Tuesday. He should remain a serviceable corner infielder in mixed-leagues.
Izturis ditches switch-hittingWednesday 7/23, 10:37 AM CT
Cesar Izturis has decided to ditch pinch-hitting and hit exclusively from the right side, at least for the time being, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The shortstop is batting .294 from the right side and .192 from the left side this year. "I'm more comfortable there," Izturis said. "Look at the numbers."

Our View: If Izturis can get his average up to a respectable number just hitting from the right side (he's currently batting .226 overall), he steals enough bases that he would be usable in NL-only leagues.
Hairston cleared Wednesday 7/23, 10:11 AM CT
Jerry Hairston Jr. has been cleared and is running again as he continues to recover from a strained right hamstring, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Our View: Hairston is eligible to come off the DL July 29, and hopes to get in some at-bats in the minors and return to the Reds at that time.
Hensley to start ThursdayWednesday 7/23, 10:07 AM CT
The San Diego Union-Tribune indicates that Clay Hensley will start in the Padres' rotation Thursday in place of Randy Wolf, who was traded to the Astros Tuesday.

Our View: Hensley worked as a reliever over five brief innings, but had three strikeouts and only surrendered one hit, and is worth a look in NL-only leagues if you need help.
Young could be activated Wednesday 7/23, 10:02 AM CT
Manager Bud Black indicated that the club may activate Chris Young from the DL rather than ask him to make a third rehab start, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Our View: Black deems Young ready, and he may be brought back to start Tuesday's game against the Diamondbacks.
Harang cleared Wednesday 7/23, 9:55 AM CT
Aaron Harang, who is recovering from a strained right forearm, has been cleared to resume throwing by medical director Dr. Tim Kremchek, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. Harang pitched from 70 feet on Tuesday, with no issues.

Our View: Harang is now eligible to come off the DL, but that won't happen as he went 10 days without throwing, and it is going to take time for him to rebuild arm strength. He will be re-evaluated today.
Carmona remains on track Wednesday 7/23, 9:49 AM CT
Fausto Carmona remains on track to return to the Indians' rotation this weekend, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. He did not have any issues during his 40-pitch bullpen session Tuesday, and his hip is no longer a problem.

Our View: Manager Eric Wedge has him slated to start on Saturday against the Twins. Carmona will provide a boost to the Indians, as well as fantasy squads, and should be penciled back into lineups for the weekend.
Clement injured Wednesday 7/23, 9:42 AM CT
The Seattle Times indicates that Jeff Clement won't be able to serve as a catcher until at least Friday after tearing the nail off his right thumb during action on Tuesday.

Our View: If he is part of your mix in AL-only leagues, the team indicated he may still be able to pinch hit if needed.
Wood to throw on the side Wednesday 7/23, 9:30 AM CT
Kerry Wood is scheduled to throw on the side today as he tries to bounce back from a finger blister, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Our View: Following the session, the Cubs hope to have a better idea as to when he may return. He could still be facing a short stint on the DL if his ailment looks like it will persist into the four-game set with Florida that starts Thursday.
Soriano scheduled to come off DL Wednesday 7/23, 9:25 AM CT
Alfonso Soriano is scheduled to come off the DL Wednesday following his recovery from a broken left ring finger, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Our View: He is expected to return to the Cubs' lineup tonight against Arizona, and Lou Piniella is hoping he can spark the offense. He may need a game or two to shake off the rust, but is too talented to leave on your bench while he is active.
Pierre could return this weekend Wednesday 7/23, 8:54 AM CT
Juan Pierre has made rapid progress in his recovery from a sprained ligament in his left knee, and manager Joe Torre mentioned that he could be back with the Dodgers as soon as Saturday, according to the LA Times.

Our View: Joe Torre noted that he will have some decisions to make regarding the Dodgers' outfield when Pierre returns, as Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier have made great strides, and he doesn't want to make Andruw Jones a part-time player (due namely to his lucrative contract).
Ibanez closing in on Safeco record Wednesday 7/23, 8:46 AM CT
Raul Ibanez is closing in on a home run record at Safeco Field, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. He has blasted 60 homers at Safeco, which is only two behind all-time leader Bret Boone.

Our View: Ibanez has 13 homers so far this season, with two coming over his last six games, both of which were hit at home against the Indians.
Bedard gets MRI results Wednesday 7/23, 8:42 AM CT
Erik Bedard's MRI revealed the original diagnosis of an internal impingement in his left shoulder, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

Our View: Bedard was eligible to come off the DL this week, but he hasn't even been able to throw a bullpen session. The non-waiver trade deadline is July 31, and for Bedard to be dealt, he would have to show he is healthy.
Pedroia is a road warrior Wednesday 7/23, 7:59 AM CT
Dustin Pedroia is close to a Red Sox record as he is riding a 23-game road hitting streak, according to the Boston Globe. He is just one off of Nomar Garciaparra's streak in 1998, which is the longest in Boston since 1956.

Our View: He will look to continue the streak tonight at Seattle. Overall, he currently has a seven-game hitting streak, with five multi-hit efforts over the span.
Punto returns Wednesday 7/23, 7:51 AM CT
Nick Punto returned to the Twins' lineup Tuesday following his battle with a finger injury, according to the Star Tribune.

Our View: It is good news that he is back in action, but he went 0-for-4 (against the Yankees), and fantasy owners in AL-only leagues should wait until he proves to be effective again before using him.
Cuddyer gets CT results Wednesday 7/23, 7:46 AM CT
Michael Cuddyer's CT scan revealed that his sore left middle finger has no damage to the bone, according to the Star Tribune. Cuddyer will meet with the Twins' doctor soon to figure out the next step.

Our View: This is good news that there is no structural damage, but there still remains no timetable as to when he may return to the Twins. Denard Span will continue to roam his spot in the outfield while he is gone.
Paulino's return remains unknown Wednesday 7/23, 7:41 AM CT
Ronny Paulino's sprained right ankle was believed to be minor, but he is still not playing, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He is progressing in his rehab, but there remains no timetable for his return to the Pirates.

Our View: Paulino wouldn't be play much behind Ryan Doumit (holds a .323 average) if he was with the Pirates right now anyway.
Phillies join list for Nady Wednesday 7/23, 7:36 AM CT
The Phillies have joined the list of interested teams for Xavier Nady, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The Phillies are also interested in reliever Damaso Marte.

Our View: Nady is hitting .327 with 56 RBI, and his rate of home runs would increase by playing his home games at Citizen's Bank Ballpark.
Sanchez finally on track Wednesday 7/23, 7:31 AM CT
Freddy Sanchez battled through injuries this season but is seemingly finally on track as he has registered three hits in three of his last four games, and has homered in each of his last two, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Sanchez said, "I just feel better up there. I'm looking for the pitch I can hit, and I'm getting a good swing on it. It's obviously taken a lot longer than I wanted, but I really can't look back at the first half."

Our View: Sanchez should be penciled into your lineups again, and it looks like fantasy owners may be rewarded for their patience over the second half of the season.
Barton set for rehab assignment Wednesday 7/23, 7:23 AM CT
Brian Barton, who is recovering from a fracture in his right wrist, will report to Triple-A Memphis Wednesday to begin a rehab assignment, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: As a Rule 5 draft pick, Barton must remain on the Cardinals' major-league roster all season for them to gain control of his rights. As with other major league players, the rules allow for Barton to go on a 20-day rehab assignment without passing through waivers or using an option. He will be back in a part-time role when his wrist allows, but will not merit fantasy attention, as he only hit .246 over 122 at-bats this season before getting hurt.
Rasmus injured Wednesday 7/23, 7:17 AM CT
Colby Rasmus was forced to leave Tuesday's game with Triple-A Memphis due to a knee injury, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He is scheduled for an MRI today.

Our View: He just returned to the team following time off due to a groin injury. Rasmus is the Cardinals' top prospect, but has had trouble staying healthy this season in the minors, which slowed his development.
Wainwright progressing Wednesday 7/23, 7:13 AM CT
Adam Wainwright has been cleared to throw off a mound and had a 40-pitch workout in the Cardinals' bullpen Tuesday as he recovers from a sprained right middle finger, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He threw fastballs and changeups during the session, and will move up to his curveball next. "It felt like I wanted to feel, it felt natural," Wainwright said. "I've got some joint stiffness that has to break down, but otherwise it's about building my pitch count up... "Best case?" he said earlier. "Two and a half weeks, maybe."

Our View: Wainwright is still dealing with some stiffness but noted that his throws felt natural during the session. He expects to return to the Cardinals' rotation within three weeks.
Street on Reds' radar Wednesday 7/23, 7:05 AM CT
The SF Chronicle indicates that Huston Street is on the Reds' radar.

Our View: The source also believes the Mets may take a shot at him prior to the trade deadline. Either way, Street looks to be leaving Oakland, assuming a favorable deal is presented.
Barton to have staples removedWednesday 7/23, 7:01 AM CT
Daric Barton will have the six staples removed from his head today, and then will go to Albuquerque to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View: Barton has struggled with a .224 average with Oakland, so some at-bats in the minors could benefit him before he returns to the team.
Mags drives 'em in vs KCWednesday 7/23, 12:44 AM CT
The man affectionately known as Mags to teammates led the way on the field this evening, pushing his Tigers to a dominating 7-1 win over the Royals. Outfielder Magglio Ordonez went 3-for-5 at the dish, driving in two runs along the way.

Our View: Mags stranded three runners on base, not that they were needed. He now carries a record of 8-for-23 (.348) over five games since returning from injury, touting five RBIs over his last three.
Rogers stands tall versus KCWednesday 7/23, 12:43 AM CT
The Tigers found solid pitching from the veteran left arm of Kenny Rogers this evening, leading his team to a 7-1 rain-soaked win over the Kansas City Royals. Rogers pitched six innings, allowing just one run over four hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

Our View: The Tigers needed his effort this evening, finding muted offensive numbers. Rogers now carries a record of 5-2 over his last 12 starts.
Polanco homers in win over KCWednesday 7/23, 12:42 AM CT
The Tigers found five players to post one RBI each this evening, pulling the 7-1 win over Kansas City. The man of the hour had to be second baseman Placido Polanco , going 2-for-5 with his 21st double and fourth homer of the season to total two RBIs and two runs scored on the night.

Our View: Polanco has fallen a bit, hitting .386 through June to slip to .246 through July. He's never been a huge run producer, but his five RBIs thus far this month is still disappointing.
Mathis shows Angels the wayWednesday 7/23, 12:16 AM CT
The Indians and Angels put on a great show for baseball fans this evening, but in the end the hometown fans were rewarded with a 3-2 win for the Angels. Their efforts were led by catcher Jeff Mathis , going 1-for-3 at the plate with his seventh home run of the season to post two RBIs and two runs scored on the night, also adding his second stolen base of the season.

Our View: Mathis has really struggled at the plate this month, hitting .195 through July with one home run and seven RBIs coming into today.
Sizemore homersWednesday 7/23, 12:15 AM CT
The Indians failed to make good on solid hitting, falling 3-2 to the Angels this evening. Outfielder Grady Sizemore was once again a factor, hitting his 24th homer of the season to go 1-for-4 at the plate with one RBI and one run scored. Sizemore did face closer Francisco Rodriguez in the top of the 9th with two outs (no one on) with a chance to tie it up, but instead found a walk.

Our View: Sizemore has work to do to match the nine homers for 16 RBIs he enjoyed in June, touting five homers for 10 RBIs thus far in July. However, his average is up from .281 in June to .328 in July.
Ginter, Indians falls shortWednesday 7/23, 12:14 AM CT
The Indians got a solid outing from RHP Matt Ginter this evening but failed to put the runs up to support his cause, losing 3-2 against LA. Ginter pitched six, allowing three runs on seven hits with no walks and one strikeout.

Our View: Ginter tallied just one outing before this evening, earning a win with five innings of shutout baseball. He didn't throw a shutout tonight, but his efforts and potential stand alone.
Ramirez is strugglingWednesday 7/23, 12:10 AM CT
Aramis Ramirez went 0-for-3 on Tuesday against the Diamondbacks. He is 0-for-20 since the All-Star break.

Our View: Ramirez is hitting just .213 on the road this season compared to .338 at home.
Jackson tallies three more hitsWednesday 7/23, 12:02 AM CT
Conor Jackson went 3-for-5 with his 10th home run, three RBI and two runs scored on Tuesday.

Our View: Jackson continues to be one of the more reliable hitters in the NL West. His average stands at .308 and could be on its way up.
Dice-K gets another winWednesday 7/23, 12:02 AM CT
Boston RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka enjoyed one of his more productive outings this season, giving his Red Sox the 4-0 win over Seattle. Matsuzaka pitched 7 1/3 innings to surrender two runs on five hits with three walks and six strikeouts.

Our View: One of the best outings Dice has seen this season, getting his second consecutive win and his third over his last five starts. In fact, Dice now sits at 11-1 on the season.
Suzuki pulls through despite loss to BostonWednesday 7/23, 12:01 AM CT
Seattle outfielder Ichiro Suzuki continues to lead despite his Mariners' 4-2 loss to the Boston Red Sox this evening. Ichiro went 1-for-2 at the plate with two walks and his 12th double of the season to total one RBI and one run scored on the night.

Our View: Ichiro has turned it up this month, hitting .338 through July, though he touts just three RBIs and one stolen base.
Drew leads offense for Sox in winWednesday 7/23, 12:00 AM CT
The Red Sox and Mariners battled late into the eve with Boston emerging victorious, 4-0. The charge was led, once again, by J.D. Drew , going 2-for-3 with one walk and his 18th homer of the season to total two RBIs and one run scored.

Our View: Drew has cooled this month after a hot June in which he hit .337 with 12 homers and 27 RBIs. Thus far in July, he's hitting .231 with just one homer and six RBIs, a significant fall that must frustrate fantasy owners across the globe (though Drew's history suggests surprise should not be a valid emotion).
Petit beats the Cubs in spot startWednesday 7/23, 12:00 AM CT
Yusmeiro Petit pitched well enough for the win on Tuesday night against the Cubs. In five innings he allowed just one run but walked three and gave up five hits.

Our View: Will Petit take Micah Owings' spot in the rotation? His ERA is down to 2.78 and he has given up just two runs in two starts.
