With the Favre saga looming over the NFL, Vikings coach Brad Childress wants to make it clear that Tarvaris Jackson is the man. Childress told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, "I just think he's right where he needs to be in terms of being a third-year quarterback... He understands what it means to play an NFL season as a starter with all eyes on him, dissecting everything."

Our View:Jackson went 8-4 as a starter last season with a 58 percent completion percentage for 1,911 yards and nine touchdowns with 11 interceptions.

The Minnesota Vikings are likely to see a lot of blitzing until quarterback Tarvaris Jackson proves he can make sound decisions in the face of pressure, according to Pro Football Weekly.

Our View:It’s difficult to grade offseason practices for such a specific element, but team insiders say Jackson has proven to be more calm in the face of pressure in terms of decision making, getting rid of the ball more cleanly and effectively and standing in the pocket amid a heavy rush. The Vikings are expected to make the playoffs in 2008, so the pressure will be on Jackson to step up his game this year.

Tarvaris Jackson has impressed everyone with the Vikings with his work in the early going, according to the Associated Press. "There’s no hesitation when he calls plays,” backup QB Gus Frerotte said. “He’s very confident with himself and how he’s handling himself in the huddle and with the other players. That’s really good to see. That’s all about being a leader and being a quarterback.”

Our View:Frerotte should know has he has played caddy to some of the better QBs in the league in his career. Jackson has a long way to go to impress fantasy gamers, but he will be supported by the best rushing attack in the NFC.

Tarvaris Jackson has at least one Viking firmly in his corner, and that is C Matt Birk who was very complimentary during a radio interview, according to Twin Cities.com. “This is the year," Birk said. "Do I think he has what it takes? Absolutely! Is it going to be ups and downs, bumps in the road? Absolutely. But I think he’s coming along. … I think he’s got what it takes. Obviously, it’s a big year for him and a big year for us, but I feel very good with him being our quarterback.”

Our View:With Gus Frerotte the only experienced backup the Vikes better hope that Tarvaris can take the next step this year and avoid the indecision and INT problems that plagued him last year. Adding WR Bernard Berrian should help.

The Minnesota Vikings and vice president of player personnel, Rick Spielman, have agreed to a contract extension, according to the Palm Beach Post. Spielman is entering his second season in Minnesota, and was in charge of drafting Rookie of the Year Adrian Peterson last season.
