Shawne Merriman underwent surgery on Monday to repair the torn ligaments in his left knee, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Our View:Merriman will now begin his long road back with rehab, and he should be able to play without missing time next season.

It was only one game for Shawne Merriman but that game cost him $7,500 for a hit he planted on Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme, according to SI.com.

Our View:Merriman is out for the year with his knee injury.

Linebacker Shawne Merriman is turning the lights out on his 2008 season. He has decided to have surgery on his left knee. "Shawne informed me he did not feel right (on the field) and thought it best to shut it down," general manager A.J. Smith informs the team's official web site. "The road to winning the AFC West just got more difficult, but not impossible. Nothing is impossible. Shawne is a great player and an inspirational leader. He will be missed."

Our View:Why does Smith sound like he's looking at one of those posters with a mountain and an eagle on it when he delivered this news? Anyway, IDP fantasy owners should not be shocked by this news. The Chargers will likely use either Jyles Tucker or Marques Harris in Merriman's spot, and their fantasy team defense is due to slide down the rankings.

Sources have told ESPN.com that Shawne Merriman will be placed on injured reserve and undergo season-ending surgery to his left knee.

Our View:This news shouldn't be terribly surprising given what we already knew about Merriman's messed-up knee. Look for Jyles Tucker or Marques Harris to step into Merriman's outside linebacker spot and potentially help out in IDP fantasy leagues.
