The Tampa Bay Tribune reports that Jon Gruden is not ready to announce Earnest Graham as the starting tailback just yet. Gruden said, "Well I’m not going to get into who’s starting and all that right now, but obviously if you watched him today he made some great runs inside the red zone. We worked exclusively in the plus-20 area today and he made some outstanding runs and a couple good blitz pickups. He’s a heck of a back."

Our View:Graham has plenty of competition. Cadillac Williams is trying to bounce back from a torn ACL, Warrick Dunn was signed in the offseason, and Michael Bennett is still with the team. Still, he has to be considered the favorite at this point.

We reported the initial news of a contract extension for Tampa Bay running back Earnest Graham two days ago, but the details of the contract were kept out of those initial updates. We are happy to report that we now know what the Bucs are giving Graham to return, and it is a bit surprising, according to ProFootballTalk.com.

Our View:Graham was signed to a three-year, $10.5 million extension but has been given no signing bonus and no guaranteed money. Graham’s salary for 2008 increases from $605,000 to $1.5 million, and he’ll earn a $1 million roster bonus if he’s on the opening-day roster in September. Thus, as Talk notes, the Bucs could cut Graham before the start of the regular season and owe him nothing.

The Buccaneers and running back Earnest Graham have reached an agreement on a four-year, $11 million contract extension, NFL.com reports.

Our View:Graham surprisingly pounded out 1,040 total yards and seven touchdowns over his 10 starts in 2007, and he'll enter 2008 as the top dog. Warrick Dunn may eat into the load a bit and Cadillac Williams could return late in the year, but Graham still looks like a low-end No. 2 or high-end No. 3 fantasy back.
June 29, 2008
The Buccaneers and running back Earnest Graham are close to finalizing a three-year, $10.5 million contract extension, ProFootballTalk.com reports.

Our View:Graham expects to enter 2008 as the starter, even though the club signed Warrick Dunn. We have some concerns about Graham maintaining the surprising pace he displayed last year, but he looks to be, at worst, a decent No. 3 running back option.
June 17, 2008
Running back Earnest Graham made his first appearance of the offseason at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' mandatory minicamp Tuesday and expressed optimism that he will have a new contract soon, according to the Tampa Tribune. But he stopped short of a guarantee that he would report to training camp on time if talks have not produced a new deal by the July 25 reporting date.

Our View:Graham, who became the starter at running back following injuries to Cadillac Williams and Michael Pittman, rushed for 898 yards and 10 touchdowns last season in leading the Bucs to an NFC South title. He has one-year left on his contract that would pay him a base salary of about $605,000 in 2008.
