Luke McCown is leading the competition over Brian Griese for the primary backup job at quarterback behind starter Jeff Garcia, according to the St. Petersburg Times. Griese has been closing the gap however, and coach Jon Gruden said, "Griese is one of those guys the more you give him, the better he is. He's rare that way."

Our View:The winner of the job should see action this season with Jeff Garcia unlikely to remain intact for a full 16-game slate, but neither contender should hold solid fantasy value.

Luke McCown appears to be ahead of Brian Griese on the depth chart right now, the Tampa Tribune reports. He looked sharp during practice on Wednesday and has earned praise from Jon Gruden.

Our View:Many people assume Griese will be the No. 2 guy based on experience and because he's had success with Gruden in the past, but McCown is a bit of a sleeper in this group. He was pretty sharp over his 139 passes in 2007. Anyway, both backups are unlikely to unseat Jeff Garcia.

Quarterbacks Luke McCown and Bruce Gradkowski once were competing for the opportunity to back up Jeff Garcia. Now both are fighting to remain on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers roster, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View:Jeff Garcia is entrenched as the starter, and Brian Griese is provides a veteran option at backup quarterback. The team likes rookie Josh Johnson, leaving McCown and Gradkowski on the roster bubble. The forgotten man, Chris Simms, will likely be moved prior to the trade deadline.

Luke McCown wants to compete for the starting quarterback job in Tampa Bay this season, according to the PewterReport. He stated, "Well you know it's always a competition. Jeff is our starter, but that doesn't keep me from competing to be the starter. I want to be the starter. Right now I'm the number two and competing. That's what were doing right now. We're competing through OTA's. It doesn't matter what you are on the depth chart it's about competing when you get on the field, being prepared, doing what you can to help the team win. And that's the whole point of a team. Everybody has a role. Everybody has a part. Whether I'm starting or being a backup I'm going to put everything I can into it, to help this team win. Again it's about preparation and being ready."

Our View:McCown will likely lose out to Jeff Garcia, but could still serve as the team's top backup.

Luke McCown has been named the starting quarterback for Sunday’s game against the Texans, according to ESPN. He got the nod over Jeff Garcia, who is nursing a sore back.

Our View:McCown played well last week and should have some success against a suspect Texans secondary. In other words, don’t move Joey Galloway too far down in your wide receiver rankings.
