Newsbreakers
November 21, 2008
The News Democrat reports that St. Louis Rams coach Jim Haslett said running back Steven Jackson's thigh injury was an example of how missing training camp can come back to haunt a player. "Guys don't go to training camp, and when they come back, they either pull a hip flexor, groin, something, and you hope it's nothing major that keeps them out," Haslett said. Haslett said Jackson's injury is related to him missing the first 27 days of the preseason, including all of the team's training camp during a contract holdout.

Our View:Jackson will sit out for the fourth time in five games this Sunday against the Chicago Bears because of a strained quadriceps muscle in his right leg that he suffered on October 19 against the Dallas Cowboys. The coach was blunt in saying that he was "mystified" that this injury has kept the running back out so long.
November 20, 2008
Steven Jackson will test his ailing thigh with a vigorous workout Saturday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:Jackson will miss this weekend's game against the Bears, but is optimistic he can return to the gridiron in Week 13.
November 17, 2008
The Belleville News Democrat reports that Steven Jackson (thigh) has been ruled out for Week 12. Coach Jim Haslett said the Rams’ medical staff recommend that Jackson, who has already missesd three of the Rams' last four games, sit out this week. “They feel he should be out this week, and rest him, and see what happens next week," Haslett said.

Our View:Jackson has just seven carries since Week 7 and has been one of the bigger disappointments in all of fantasy football. No word if he will return for Week 13.
November 14, 2008
Steven Jackson won't make the trip to San Francisco to battle the 49ers, and instead will visit a specialist to determine why his strained right thigh is not responding well to treatment, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:Antonio Pittman will get the start at running back in a favorable match-up, and will be backed up by Ken Darby and Travis Minor. Pittman is worth a look this week in deeper leagues.
November 14, 2008
Unless Steven Jackson fully practices today without any issues, he will likely miss Week 11 at San Francisco, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He did some work Wednesday, but was unable to practice Thursday due to his strained right thigh. Coach Jim Haslett said, "He's not putting it on the ground and exploding off it. That's the big thing, and until he does it, he's not going to be really effective."

Our View:Antonio Pittman would be the top candidate to replace Jackson at running back in a favorable match-up against the 49ers. Jackson would be missing his third straight game due to the ailment.
November 13, 2008
Updating an earlier report, Steven Jackson has continued stiffness and swelling in his quadriceps muscle and as a result he missed another practice on Thursday, according to the Belleville News-Democrat. “Today waking up this morning it kind of took a step backwards," Jackson said. “We’ll see what a day off will do."

Our View:SJax doesn't appear to have much of a shot at playing this weekend, and even if he does it is clear that he will be far from 100%. Antonio Pittman will be thrust into the starters role and appears likely to be the back to own this week in St. Louis.
November 13, 2008
Rams running back Steven Jackson is probably not going to play on Sunday, but he has not been completely ruled out, according to the AP. "I doubt if we'll have him, to be honest with you. But we'll see. You never know," said Rams coach Jim Haslett.

Our View:Jackson has not started for three consecutive games, and should he miss this one, Antonio Pittman would once again start and be the primary running back against the 49ers.
November 13, 2008
Rams running back Steven Jackson was not practicing on Thursday, instead standing on the sidelines and watching, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:This is an ominous sign regarding his availability to play against the 49ers on Sunday. He took about half the team's snaps in practice Wednesday before having this setback.
November 13, 2008
Rams running back Steven Jackson took nearly half the snaps in the team's practice on Wednesday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:Jackson has been dealing with a thigh strain, and if he makes it through a full practice, will suit up against the 49ers, who have a decent run defense, despite the fact they've given up 10 rushing touchdowns.
November 12, 2008
Steven Jackson is on the practice field today, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:It remains to be seen how much work he will be able to handle today while recovering from his thigh ailment. As previously noted, he would need to fully practice before coach Jim Haslett considers penciling him back into the lineup.
November 10, 2008
Steven Jackson (thigh) is listed as day to day, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:Jackson's status for next Sunday against the Niners is unknown. He did not practice at all last week, but if he gets a full day in before Saturday, he figures to be able to go.
November 9, 2008
Rams inactives: QB Brock Berlin (3rd), RB Travis Minor, RB Steven Jackson, LB Chris Draft, G Roy Schuening, T John Greco, DE Eric Moore, CB Tye Hill.

Our View:Steven Jackson (thigh) is inactive, leaving Antonio Pittman (hamstring) and Kenneth Darby to handle the ground game workload. If Pittman is limited, Samkon Gado could even claim a few carries.
November 7, 2008
Steven Jackson has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Jets after missing Friday's practice due to his thigh ailment, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:Antonio Pittman is expected to be active, but coach Jim Haslett noted that Kenneth Darby will likely get the start. Samkon Gado is also expected to see some action, but none should be considered for fantasy lineups against a dominant Jets' run defense.
November 7, 2008
Steven Jackson, who is dealing with a thigh ailment, was absent from Friday's practice, and is likely to miss Sunday's game against the Jets, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:Antonio Pittman was able to practice with his hamstring ailment, so he could be in the mix at running back with Kenneth Darby and Samkon Gado, assuming Jackson doesn't play.
November 6, 2008
After being unable to practice Thursday, Steven Jackson stated it would take "something miraculous" for him to practice Friday and play in Week 10, according to the Belleville News-Democrat. He said, "A full practice Friday, probably not going to happen to be honest with you. I’m surely hoping that I come in tomorrow and something miraculous happens tonight, and I feel like I can give a full practice like coach Haslett is wanting."

Our View:After attempting to play last Sunday, Jackson underwent an MRI on Monday that revealed some inflammation in his quad muscle. If unable to go, Ken Darby and Samkon Gado would split the workload on the ground against the Jets' 4th ranked run defense.
November 6, 2008
Steven Jackson is absent from Thursday's practice, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:Kenneth Darby and Samkon Gado are getting the reps with the first team offense. Jackson needs to fully practice Friday to have a chance to play in Week 10 against the Jets.
November 5, 2008
Steven Jackson did not practice Wednesday due to his strained thigh, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:Coach Jim Haslett previously stated that he wants to see Jackson go through a full practice some day this week before he’ll play him Sunday against the Jets. Antonio Pittman (hamstring) and Travis Minor (concussion) also missed practice, so Kenneth Darby took reps as the starting running back, with Samkon Gado working as the backup.
November 3, 2008
The Belleville News-Democrat reports running back Steven Jackson must practice at full speed at least one day this week or he won’t play in the Rams’ game against the New York Jets on Sunday, coach Jim Haslett said. “Steven has to give us a full day's work this week or he’ll not play," Haslett said. “We can’t go into the game not knowing whether he can play or not. We’re going to make sure he can actually go in practice, and not just jog through. He’s going to have to give us a full day’s work, and I think he’ll feel better about it also."

Our View:Jackson has a bruised thigh, but fantasy owners have to appreciate this kind of head's up. We should know by Friday whether or not Jackson will start on Sunday.
November 3, 2008
Steven Jackson was able to return to the gridiron with his thigh ailment in Week 9 against Arizona, but was not effective with only seven carries for 17 yards, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He said, "I hate to take an injury as an excuse. I didn't play like myself. I'm very down right now. I didn't help my team out, and it's really disappointing. And it's something that I'm definitely going to use as motivation for the rest of the season."

Our View:He dropped a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter, and could not get it going on the ground, and looks to be a gut-check for fantasy owners in Week 10 against a strong Jets' run defense that is only surrendering 76 yards per game.
November 2, 2008
Steven Jackson returned to the gridiron following his bout with a thigh injury, but he was given a light workload in a 34-13 loss to Arizona. He only carried the ball seven times for 17 yards. He did not register any receptions.

Our View:Fantasy owners should be pleased that he is back in action, but hopefully he will handle a larger workload next weekend against the Jets.
November 2, 2008
Adam Schefter of NFL Network has stated that Steven Jackson will start today against the Cardinals.

Our View:Jackson stated on his personal website Saturday that he was going to play, and should be penciled into fantasy lineups in a manageable match-up against Arizona following this morning's confirmation.
November 1, 2008
Steven Jackson stated on his personal website that he will play Sunday against Arizona. He noted that his leg is feeling good enough to head into battle.

Our View:Barring a change in his status on Sunday, Jackson should be penciled into fantasy lineups against a manageable Cardinals' run defense.
October 31, 2008
Updating an earlier report, Steven Jackson was not a full participant in Friday's practice and remains limited while dealing with his thigh ailment, according to the Belleville News-Democrat.

Our View:He handled quite a bit of work early, but did nothing later in practice. He remains a game-time decision for Sunday.
October 31, 2008
Steven Jackson is seeing his most extensive action in practice today and looks to be a full participant, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:This is encouraging news as Jackson was limited on Wednesday and Thursday due to his thigh ailment. We will keep you updated on his status for Sunday's game against Arizona.
October 30, 2008
Rams running back Steven Jackson is going to be a game-time decision, and his chances of playing are about 50-50, according to the Belleville News-Democrat. "You test it Sunday. You don’t know if you go too hard on Friday whether you’ll tweak it," Jackson said.

Our View:Jackson has a strained quad. He is a quality fantasy option against most teams, and Arizona is no different. Be sure to check Sunday morning for his status.
October 30, 2008
Rams running back Steven Jackson is splitting first-team reps with a number of players, including Antonio Pittman, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:It was thought that Jackson would be fine for Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals, but that may not necessarily be the case. More will be known after the conclusion of practices on Friday.
October 29, 2008
Contrary to earlier reports, the Rams are not as optimistic about Steven Jackson's status this weekend, according to the AP. "That's going to be a day-to-day thing, just see how he feels when he's running," head coach Jim Haslett said. "But he did a couple of things today and I think he did OK."

Our View:Keep a close eye on Jackson as the week goes along. The Rams are saying that his status might not be known until game time on Sunday.
October 29, 2008
Rams running back Steven Jackson has not been limited in practice on Wednesday, and he should be ready to play on Sunday against the Cardinals, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:Good news for the Rams and fantasy owners both. Jackson has found his groove recently, and is a dual running/receiving threat who is capable of putting up big totals on a weekly basis.
October 27, 2008
Steven Jackson appears on track to return to the lineup in Week 9 after missing the Rams Week 8 game due to his injured quadriceps, according to NFL.com.

Our View:Jackson's situation likely cost many an owner a Week 8 victory, but it sounds like he will be ready to contribute again this weekend. If you own Jackson and haven't yet picked up Antonio Pittman, we suggest you do so just in case.
October 27, 2008
Coach Jim Haslett commented on why Steven Jackson was made inactive for Week 8, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Jackson's ailing leg did not feel right before the game and Haslett said, "He did a lot in pregame; he just couldn't go. Every time he planted and tried to cut on it, it grabbed. So we thought what's best for him, and what's best for this team, was not to let him go."

Our View:Jackson was missed by fantasy owners, but should be ready to return next Sunday when the Rams host the Cardinals.
October 26, 2008
Running back Steven Jackson will be inactive in Week 8 versus New England, according to Adam Schefter of the NFL Network.

Our View:Antonio Pittman will get the start against the Patriots' 19th ranked run defense that's allowing 117.2 yards per game. Additionally, Travis Minor will see increased action as a result of Jackson being inactive.
October 26, 2008
Running back Steven Jackson (thigh) is expected to play against New England, according to John Clayton of ESPN.

Our View:This conflicts with an earlier report by Fox Sports that Jackson was an 85 percent bet not to play. We will provide definitive word when the inactive lists are released.
October 26, 2008
FOX Sports' John Czarnecki thinks that Steven Jackson is "85 percent not to play" due to his quad injury. The Rams have said publicly that he's likely a game-time decision.

Our View:Check back later for updates on S-Jax. In the event that he does sit out, Antonio Pittman would start, but Travis Minor would also be in the mix.
October 24, 2008
Steven Jackson will be a game-time decision for Sunday’s game against the Patriots, according to the AP. He returned to practice on a limited basis Friday after sitting out the previous two days with a strained quad muscle, and coach Jim Haslett said, "It’ll be a game-day decision. He doesn’t need a lot of reps because he knows everything."

Our View:In the event that Jackson is unable to go Sunday, Travis Minor and Antonio Pittman would share the workload at running back.
October 24, 2008
Updating an earlier report, Steven Jackson practiced Friday for the first time this week while dealing with a strained quad muscle, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:He is taking part in most of the drills, which is encouraging news regarding his playing status for Sunday at New England. We will keep you posted on his status.
October 24, 2008
Steven Jackson said he felt a lot better Thursday than he did on Wednesday, and probably three times better than he did since suffering a strained quad muscle in Sunday's win over Dallas, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:He is going to try and be ready for this weekend's game against the Patriots, but noted that he still has to wait and see. Jackson wants to give his tender leg all the time it needs to return to 100 percent effectiveness. If it takes seven days, so be it. If it takes 10, that's what it will be. We will keep you posted on his status.
October 23, 2008
The Belleville News Democrat reports that Steven Jackson did not practice again on Thursday due to a slightly strained quad muscle.

Our View:Jackson is being held out mostly for precauttionary reasons and should be ready to play the Patriots this Sunday. He has resembled the Top 5 back we expected in recent weeks.
October 22, 2008
Running back Steven Jackson told Foxsports.com, "No need to rush," he said. "We have until Sunday to make a game-time decision. But if I could tell anybody, and if my fans are concerned, it's definitely going in the right direction."

Our View:All signs are pointing to the running back being in the lineup against the Patriots on Sunday. Jackson is coming off a three touchdown week and is really starting to hit his stride.
October 22, 2008
Steven Jackson sat out Wednesday's practice while nursing a thigh ailment, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:He was not expected to practice today, and coach Jim Haslett believes he will be able to play this weekend against New England.
October 21, 2008
The Rams are coming off a big win over the Cowboys and on Tuesday Steven Jackson was named the NFC Player of the Week, according to the St. Louis Post Dispatch. Jackson ran for 160 yards and three touchdowns in the win.

Our View:As of right now Jackson has said that he will play in the Rams Week 8 game versus the Patriots. Keep an eye on the running back's status throughout the week.
October 20, 2008
Running back Steven Jackson may miss practice this week, but he is expected to play in Week 8 against the Patriots. An MRI on Monday revealed a "slight strain" of his thigh, head coach Jim Haslett informs the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:Fantasy owners can plan on using Jackson in Week 8, and we're sure there will be plenty of updates throughout the coming week.
October 20, 2008
It has been revealed that Steven Jackson injured his thigh while decimating the Cowboys' defense in a huge upset win, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Jackson said, "We think it's just a bruise. We're going to get some more tests, an MRI in the morning, just to make sure. But it's just a little tight. I'm able to walk, and I'm able to bend it. So that's a good sign."

Our View:Jackson was walking with a limp after the game, and there was some concern in the locker room that the injury could sideline Jackson for a week or two.
October 19, 2008
Steven Jackson was injured late in the Rams' win over the Dallas Cowboys, and he will undergo an MRI on Monday, according to Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:At the least, it's a pulled quad, but it could be more serious. We'll update you when more about the injury is known.
October 19, 2008
Rams running back Steven Jackson ran through and around the Cowboys' defense for 160 yards and three touchdowns in the Rams' 34-14 domination of Dallas.

Our View:There's the Steven Jackson fantasy owners remember. The team clearly goes as he does, and he now has at least 100 yards and one score in two of his last three games.
October 12, 2008
Running back Steven Jackson carried the ball 22 times for 79 yards and chipped in three receptions for 32 yards in the Week 6 upset victory over Washington.

Our View:Despite the fact that he is averaging 19 carries per game, Jackson has only managed one 100-yard rushing effort and he has scored one lone touchdown this season.
October 12, 2008
Steven Jackson is finally in playing shape as the Rams battle Washington today while coming off their bye, according to FOX Sports.

Our View:That could explain why he is only averaging 3.6 yards per carry. The Rams will be playing their first game under new head coach Jim Haslett, and hopefully the club will perform better. Jackson only scored once so far, but has generated 478 yards rushing and receiving over four games.
October 10, 2008
Rams running back Steven Jackson would like the team to be more consistent in running the ball, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "(Jim Haslett's) making sure we run the ball for four quarters and we get our guys who are our emphasis the ball throughout the game, and not just in spurts or in halves," Jackson said.

Our View:Shocking that a running back wants more touches. Despite his seemingly unproductive season, Jackson is second in the league in yards per scrimmage, with 269 rushing yards and 211 receiving yards.
September 28, 2008
Running back Steven Jackson starred in the Week 4 loss to the Bills. He rushed 24 times for 110 yards and a touchdown, and he added five catches for 78 yards.

Our View:It's nice to see Jackson finally find the end zone and have a monster day. He is looking more like the first-round fantasy stud we expected, but we still have plenty of worries about his teammates.
September 28, 2008
As expected, running back Steven Jackson (groin) is active and will start in Week 4 against the Bills.

Our View:Fantasy owners should feel free to start the stud.
September 25, 2008
Steven Jackson said the groin injury that limited him in practice is fine, and he will be able to go full bore Sunday against the Bills, according to the Belleville News-Democrat. "My groin doesn’t bother me any more than my stomach or my heart. On Sunday, it won’t be a problem," Jackson said.

Our View:For the record, Jackson said that his stomach and heart are perfectly fine, and he was just using an analogy to explain that everything feels fine.
September 24, 2008
Steven Jackson was limited in Wednesday's practice due to a sore groin, according to the Belleville News Democrat.

Our View:The team just limited his reps, which will increase through the week. As of now, it does appear he will be in jeopardy of missing Week 4 against Buffalo.
September 21, 2008
Steven Jackson saw more touches on Sunday but was still unable to find the end zone. The superstar-paid running back carried the pigskin 23 times for 66 yards, a 2.9 YPC. He also caught five passes for 62 yards.

Our View:The 28 touches were just nine less than he had in the first two weeks combined, but the results were not any better. Jackson has been averaging five catches per game, but that is a poor consolation prize to his frustrated fantasy owners.
September 19, 2008
Steven Jackson only ran the ball 27 times (for 93 yards) over the first two weeks of the season but offensive coordinator Al Saunders intends to give him a heftier workload in Week 3 at Seattle, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Saunders said, "We have to get the ball to our best player, No. 39. He hasn't run the ball enough, and we need to make sure that we establish our run. Steven is a special back."

Our View:The Rams currently rank last in the NFL in total offense, and Jackson ranks outside the top-25 in rushing yards. It is important to get the running game going this weekend as Seattle loves to blitz and would tee off on Marc Bulger if always in a predictable passing situation.
September 14, 2008
Steven Jackson wanted more carries in Week 2, but he didn't get it. Jackson toted the rock 13 times for 53 yards while adding seven catches for 37 yards.

Our View:Jackson had a pretty good day for PPR owners, but overall he's been pretty disappointing thus far.
September 12, 2008
The AP reports that Steven Jackson expects to carry the ball more for the St. Louis Rams against the Super Bowl champion New York Giants on Sunday. Last week against the Eagles he managed just 14 carries for 40 yards as the Rams had to play from behind all day. “I am definitely looking forward to it,” Jackson said about running more. “I think that is when the offense and the team thrive, when we control the ball on the ground...I definitely feel like I have my legs under me. Week 1 was a good test, letting me know where I am at as a point of competing, timing and then within the offense,"

Our View:It won’t be an easy task for Jackson and the Rams to establish the running game against the Giants. New York ranked eighth in the NFL in rush defense last season. In the season-opening 16-7 victory over Washington, the Giants held the Redskins to 84 yards rushing and only 209 total yards. Jackson was one of the bigger Week 1 disappointments in fantasy and may be an excellent buy low candidate as he figures to have a much expanded role going forward.
September 7, 2008
Newly paid running back Steven Jackson carried the football 14 times for 40 yards and chipped in three receptions for 34 yards in the loss to the Eagles.

Our View:Jackson, who looked rusty following a 27 day holdout, averaged only 2.8 yards per tote. Things don't get much easier next week when the Rams host the world champion New York Giants.
September 4, 2008
Despite a 27-day holdout during training camp, running back Steven Jackson says he’s ready to go when the St. Louis Rams open the season in Philadelphia on Sunday, according to the AP.

Our View:This is great news for fantasy owners who used a first round pick on Jackson. When he's on the field he is one of the best backs in the league. Start him as a RB1.
September 1, 2008
Coach Scott Linehan intends to give Steven Jackson a heavy workload in Week 1 against the Eagles, despite missing all of the preseason due to his contract holdout, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Linehan said, "We’ll use him; we’re not going to inactivate him. He’s going to be ready to go. We’ve really worked the conditioning level. He’s had one grueling week and had a lot of good snaps today." When asked by a reporter to project the number of carries for Jackson in the opener, Linehan sarcastically replied, "fifty."

Our View:This is good news for fantasy owners who took Jackson high in round 1.
August 29, 2008
The contract Rams runner Steven Jackson signed is worth six years and $44.805 million, but the final two seasons of it could be voided if he averages 1,200 yards rushing and 400 yards receiving in the first four years, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:If Jackson can stay healthy, those are certainly attainable numbers. Even without playing a preseason game, he remains a top selection in fantasy football drafts.
August 28, 2008
Steven Jackson didn't play on Thursday night, and in his place Lance Ball carried the ball 13 times for 70 yards and a score.

Our View:SJax should be good to go for Week 1 when the name of Ball will be all but forgotten.
August 22, 2008
Steven Jackson is asking for peace with the fans following his lengthy holdout, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Jackson said, "I do understand everyone has their own opinion. But I think if I can continue to play in the manner that I have in the previous four years, and stay healthy on the field, I think all will be forgiven. A lot of time, we're hard on our loved ones, and I consider my fans my loved ones. So some things I should take back. And I do apologize for my statements for being a little critical of them."

Our View:Last season Jackson set a personal goal of 2,500 total yards. This year he just hopes to lead the Rams to the playoffs, which would certainly get him back on the good side of the fans.
August 21, 2008
The details are in on Steven Jackson's new contract. It is a two-tiered deal, as it will either be a three-year extension worth $29.3 million with $21 million guaranteed, or a five-year contract that includes huge escalators in years four and five that could make the deal worth $49.3 million. The final two years can be voided based on performance.

Our View:Jackson was on the practice field today, as well, after passing his physical. He will be in uniform for Saturday's preseason game against Baltimore but is not expected to play.
August 21, 2008
Steven Jackson ended his holdout and now needs to get up to speed for the regular season opener, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Coach Scott Linehan said, "It will be a challenge physically more than mentally. It would be different mentally if he were a rookie, but he's familiar with the offense from his participation in the offseason program." Terms of his new deal are yet to be disclosed.

Our View:Jackson should be good to go for Week 1, and is once again worthy of a high first-round pick.
August 20, 2008
Steven Jackson's holdout is over, according to Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He will practice with the Rams tomorrow.

Our View:Details of the contract aren't known at this point. We will update you when more is known.
August 20, 2008
Steven Jackson's holdout has reached 26 days on Tuesday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He has missed 26 practices and two preseason games, with fines totaling $393,016.

Our View:The Rams will open the regular season in 19 days.
August 18, 2008
Steven Jackson's holdout has reached 24 days on Sunday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He missed 24 practices, two preseason games, and has been fined $362,784. Coach Scott Linehan stated, "It is getting critical to where time now becomes more of an issue for just the physical part of getting ready for the opener. Every day we miss now does start to factor in as to what the workload will be from the start. I know he's working hard. And I know he's training. And he'll be in very good shape when he does get in."

Our View:Jackson could start slipping down a few slots in the first round of fantasy drafts as the regular season draws closer.
August 16, 2008
The St. Louis Rams maintain that they are not going to negotiate with running back Steven Jackson as long as he remains a holdout, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:Neither the team or Jackson seems willing to budge on their positions. At this point, nothing is getting done, so sometime in the near future someone will break. Fantasy owners can only hope it's soon enough that their top-ten selection can be ready for Week 1.
August 14, 2008
Steven Jackson's holdout has reached 20 days on Wednesday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He missed 23 practices and one preseason game, with fines totaling $302,320.

Our View:Each day that Jackson misses pushes him one step closer to not being ready for Week 1 against the Eagles.
August 13, 2008
While the St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting phenom rusher Steven Jackson , in the midst of a 19-day holdout, and the Rams have had "low-key conversations" concerning a plan to resolve their differences, reports from sources inside the organization submit no such talks have taken place and that the Rams have in fact had no talks of any kind with Jackson or his representatives, according to Pro Football Talk.

Our View:PFT reports that since the Rams stated negotiations wouldn’t continue until Jackson reports for camp, agent Eugene Parker has not been in contact with the team. Regardless of whether there have or haven’t been “low-key talks,” it appears that both sides still have a long way to go before resolving this dispute.
August 13, 2008
Steven Jackson's holdout has reached 19 days as of Tuesday afternoon, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He has missed 22 practices, as well as the preseason opener against Tennessee. It marks the longest holdout in the 14-year history of the St. Louis Rams.

Our View:There have been low-key talks in the last day or two between Rams' president of football operations-general manager Jay Zygmunt and Jackson's agent, Eugene Parker. That's the first disclosure of any dialogue between the parties since the first day of training camp on July 25. The Rams' last known offer was seven years for around $50 million, with about one-third of the $50 million believed to be in guaranteed money.

Steven Jackson's holdout has reached 17 days, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He has missed 19 practices, and one preseason game. His fine total is up to $256,972.

Our View:He moves one step closer to not being ready to play in Week 1 against the Eagles.

Steven Jackson's holdout has reached 14 days, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He has missed 18 total practices and has been fined $211,624.

Our View:Every day that he misses moves him one step closer to not being ready to play in Week 1 against the Eagles.

Steven Jackson remained away from Rams camp on Tuesday, and he hit a potentially significant deadline. According to the collective bargaining agreement, a player must be in training camp 30 days before the start of the regular season or risk losing an accrued season of experience, NFL.com reports. Jackson now falls under that rule, which means the running back may push back his timeline for becoming eligible for free agency.

Our View:Jackson is seeking a long-term contract from the Rams, which means he probably isn't thinking about becoming a free agent. If he gets paid soon, this worry is out the window.

Steven Jackson has already been fined over $100,000, but he continues to hold out waiting for an offer with more guaranteed money, according to Pro Football Weekly.

Our View:Jackson is looking for at least $20 million guaranteed while the Rams want that number to be lower. It's still early on so the holdout doesn't make us too nervous, but it would be nice to see something get done.

Lost amid the 24-hour updates of Brett Favre's whereabouts is the news that Rams running back Steven Jackson has now been holding out a week, and a deal does not seem imminent, according to the AP.

Our View:The dispute has not been a nasty back and forth, therefore the media holds little interest in reporting on the story. Jackson's absence is nothing for fantasy owners to worry about yet, but might be if he starts missing preseason games.
July 28, 2008
Steven Jackson remains absent from Rams' training camp, according to the AP. The team is uncertain when he will report, and has officially been listed as a contract holdout. Coach Scott Linehan said, "Jackson just says, ‘I’m working, I ran today, lifted, how’d practice go,’ that kind of stuff. We just kind of let him know where we’re at and things that are going on. He’s real focused on what’s going on at camp, so his head’s definitely in the right place."

Our View:The Rams and Jackson’s agent, Eugene Parker, have been negotiating a long-term extension, and signing him is a priority, according to Linehan. We will keep you posted on Jackson's status.

Keeping a close eye on a situation near and dear to the hearts of fantasy owners, reports out of St. Louis indicate running back Steven Jackson and his agent had received a new contract offer from the Rams, but their decision to reject that proposal led to his absence at training camp and now the sides are in the midst of a negotiating stare down, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:Jackson's agent, Eugene Parker, turned down an offer Friday afternoon that the team said would have put Jackson in the top tier at his position in terms of pay. Coach Scott Linehan had anticipated a holdout Thursday when Jackson informed him he would not be on the team charter flight from St. Louis, although he didn't relay those fears until after the first practice. The Rams have taken a stance that they will not be continuing talks until Jackson reports for camp. Rams president of football operations Jay Zygmunt said the team approached Jackson about a longterm deal shortly after last season, but talks were delayed when the running back switched agents last month. Zygmunt also told reporters the team has made several contract offers, and declined to say how far apart the parties remained. Parker told him after turning down the offer that Jackson would not be in camp Friday, but Zygmunt was unclear how much longer the holdout would last without a deal.

The St. Louis Rams will not negotiate a new contract with running back Steven Jackson until he reports to training camp, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "I said that as soon as he got into camp and he does show up, we'd like to continue the negotiations. But we will not be negotiating while he is out of camp," said Rams executive Jay Zygmunt.

Our View:Jackson will get his money at some point, and with new offensive coordinator Al Saunders now running the show, he could be in store for a monster year, so the sooner he gets to camp, the better.

St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson, entering the final year of his contract, was a no-show for the opening day of training camp on Friday, according to ESPN. Jackson was considered a holdout after missing a team meeting Friday morning.

Our View:Jackson is in the final season of a five-year contract he signed after the Rams drafted him in the first round in 2004. He has had three straight 1,000-yard rushing seasons. Head coach Scott Linehan has called this situation a priority, and the two sides are already in negotiations. We don't expect a protracted holdout for Jackson, who is a key component of the offense.
July 25, 2008
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch indicates that the Rams have started contract talks regarding Steven Jackson, who could become a free agent after this season.

Our View:He did not accompany the Rams on their charter flight, but was granted permission to travel to training camp on his own. He is not upset with the team and will not be a holdout. Signing him to a new deal is a top priority for the Rams.

Steven Jackson stated that he is 100 percent healthy again heading into training camp, according to the Portland Tribune. He will be in the final year of his five-year contract, and said, "A contract year is big for anyone, but especially for the last year of a rookie deal. I’m looking to have a great year and lengthen my career with St. Louis. Hopefully, I’ll retire as a Ram."

Our View:He battled various injuries in 2007, but still managed to rack up 1,002 rushing yards and another 271 yards receiving. He looks to have a strong bounce back campaign in 2008 as he reclaims his crown as a fantasy king, especially with the motivation of a new contract on the horizon for him.

Steven Jackson may end up getting a record deal for the running back position, reports Pro Football Weekly. The 24-year-old back is on his third agent in five years, and would like a new contract sooner rather than later.

Our View:Jackson is arguably one of the three to five best running backs in all of football. He has obvious power and surprising speed, as evidenced by his three runs of 50 yards or more. He should be a hot commodity in fantasy football as he works with new Rams offensive coordinator Al Suanders, who has gotten big years in the past out of players like Priest Holmes, Larry Johnson and Clinton Portis.

Steven Jackson was absent from Thursday's voluntary OTA due to a twisted ankle he suffered two weeks ago, this according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:According to the report Jackson is also nursing a slight groin pull. Injuries were why Jackson played in only 12 games last year, so these nagging ailments are not what fantasy owners want to see, even if training camp is 45-days away.
May 27, 2008
Running back Steven Jackson sat out last Thursday's practice after turning an ankle on Wednesday, according to the St. Louis Post Dispatch. "It did swell up a little bit, but it's not serious," head coach Scott Linehan said.

Our View:We will keep an eye on this situation when the St. Louis Rams resume their organized team activities on June 3.
May 11, 2008
Steven Jackson would prefer to stay in St. Louis, although he expects the Rams to pay adequately for his services. "This is definitely where I want to be," Jackson tells the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Jackson is in the final year of his rookie contract, and he adds, "Well, we all know what happens in a contract year: you ball out. So, I expect to."

Our View:It isn't going to be cheap, but the price tag will only rise if Jackson does indeed "ball out" this year. We assume that's a good thing, anyway.
February 24, 2008
On the list of offseason priorities for the Rams is signing Steven Jackson to an extension, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Jackson ran for 1,002 yards in 12 games last year. The team is concentrating now on signing safety O.J. Atogwe to a long-term deal before Atogwe becomes a restricted free agent on Friday.
