Steve McNair wasn't prepared to deal with new head coach Jim Harbaugh's rigorous offseason plans, the Baltimore Sun says. Harbaugh expects players to attend the many minicamps throughout the summer and show up to weight-lifting programs, and he wanted McNair to shed some of his 250 pounds. The paper suggests McNair's body wouldn't have held up under Harbaugh's workout plan, which is why he opted to retire.

Our View:We understand that McNair has a long history of injury and should be handled lightly, but we imagine Harbaugh and he could have come to a compromise if Steve really wanted to play.

Steve McNair is expected to announce his retirement from the NFL today, according to the Baltimore Sun. He was previously believed to continue his 13-year career, and this news is surprising.

Our View:The team has quarterback's Kyle Boller and Troy Smith on the roster, and are believed to be targeting Matt Ryan of Boston College with their 8th pick in the first round of the NFL Draft.

The Baltimore Ravens received the maximum four compensatory picks in this month's draft, according to the Baltimore Sun. The Ravens were given last pick in the third round (99th overall) for losing linebacker Adalius Thomas in free agency last season, marking the highest compensatory pick ever received by the team. "Anytime you get to pick one of the top 100 players in the draft, we think that gives us an advantage," general manager Ozzie Newsome said. The Ravens' other compensatory picks -- which are given out by the NFL based on the free agents lost by the team - are one in the fourth round (for offensive tackle Tony Pashos), sixth round (fullback Ovie Mughelli) and seventh round (defensive tackle Aubrayo Franklin).

Steve McNair has nearly regained full range of motion in his left shoulder and has gotten in better condition while significantly increasing the amount of time he spends at the Baltimore Ravens’ training complex, according to the Carroll County Times. McNair, who is attempting to revive his career following an injury-plagued 2007 season, is rehabbing from December surgery to repair the labrum in his non-throwing shoulder. The Ravens have made it clear that McNair remains the frontrunner to start under center with caveats including his health status, conditioning and performance.

There had been speculation this offseason that the Ravens might ask Steve McNair, Trevor Price and some other veterans to restructure their contracts, but that hasn't happened, according to the Baltimore Sun. "I have not touched their contracts. Nothing," GM Ozzie Newsome said. Both McNair and Price missed extensive action last season, so it wouldn't be surprising to see the Ravens eventually try to rework their deals.
