Newsbreakers
November 30, 2008
The Baltimore Sun reports Willis McGahee was active for Sunday's game, but he didn't play. "It's strategic," coach John Harbaugh said. "We've got a plan, and we've got a plan for Willis, I guarantee you. And he's going to be a big part in December, no question about it."

Our View:LeRon McClain did play well in the absence of McGahee, who has only 26 yards on 18 carries over the last three games. He is still worth hanging onto due to his upside, but he certainly should not be relied upon to produce the rest of the way.
November 18, 2008
Willis McGahee's right ankle injury does not seem to be serious, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View:His status for Week 12 against Philadelphia is yet to be determined. He has scored five touchdowns this season, with two 100-yard performances, but is only averaging 3.6 yards per carry.
November 17, 2008
Ravens running back Willis McGahee suffered a "tweaked" right ankkle and left the team's game in the third quarter, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View:McGahee was bad against the Giants, with just nine carries for 18 yards. No word on if the injury will keep him out for any significant length of time.
November 9, 2008
Running back Willis McGahee rushed 25 times for 112 yards and two touchdowns in the Week 10 win over the Texans. He also caught one pass for nine yards.

Our View:Ray Rice started, but McGahee turned into the hot hand and carried the load. John Harbaugh isn't making life easy for fantasy owners these days. Any one of his three-headed monster has a chance to go off in any given week.
November 9, 2008
Running back Willis McGahee (ankle) is active for the Week 10 game against the Texans. Ray Rice (chest) and Le'Ron McClain (ankle) are also available.

Our View:We would expect McGahee to start, but this situation is far from clear. Rice and McClain did a solid job in Week 9, and John Harbaugh could end up playing the hot hand against the Texans.
November 6, 2008
Willis McGahee was limited in Thursday's practice, according to NFL.com. He is recovering from knee and ankle ailments.

Our View:He is expected to play this weekend against the Texans, but the Ravens are yet to choose a starter among McGahee and Ray Rice.
November 6, 2008
Willis McGahee looked good while practicing on a limited basis Wednesday, according to the Carroll County Times. Coach John Harbaugh said, "Willis looked good, it's the ankle more than the knee. The knee is feeling really good, he says, and he's working the ankle back. So, this should be a good week for him."

Our View:This is encouraging news, but it remains to be seen if McGahee or Ray Rice will be named the starter for Sunday's battle against the Texans.
November 3, 2008
Willis McGahee could be held out again next week against Houston, now that the Ravens are confident with Ray Rice leading their ground attack, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View:McGahee could be given more time to recover from his ankle and knee injuries, and wouldn't be needed in a favorable match-up against the Texans. McGahee looks to be a risky fantasy option for Week 10.
November 2, 2008
Running back Willis McGahee is expected to start against Cleveland, according to Darren Horton of the NFL Network.

Our View:McGahee should be a solid play against the Browns' 24th ranked run defense, which has allowed 141.8 yards per game and eight touchdowns this season. McGahee has received 22 or more carries in three of the past four games, and has scored in each of the last two weeks.
October 31, 2008
Willis McGahee, who is dealing with ankle and knee ailments, was limited in Friday's practice, according to NFL.com. He remains questionable for Sunday's game at Cleveland.

Our View:If cleared to play, McGahee will have a favorable match-up against the Browns' 24th ranked run defense that is allowing 141 yards per game. With that said, rookie Ray Rice would be worth employing if McGahee is unable to go or is forced to handle a lighter workload.
October 26, 2008
Running back Willis McGahee rushed 23 times for 58 yards and a touchdown in the Week 8 win over the Raiders. He also had a 22-yard gain and a three-yard touchdown run called back due to holding penalties.

Our View:The final numbers weren't too good, but fantasy owners will take the touchdown. McGahee is starting to help fantasy teams a little more and hopefully he can keep heading in a positive direction.
October 26, 2008
As expected, running back Willis McGahee (knee) is active for the Week 8 game against the Raiders.

Our View:Fantasy owners can feel free to use McGahee, who is coming off his first 100-yard outing of the season.
October 24, 2008
Willis McGahee (knee) is being listed as probable to play in Week 8 against the Raiders after practicing full on Thursday and Friday, according to the Ravens Official Website.

Our View:It's not clear if McGahee is healthy enough to pick up 20+ carries this week, but he will certainly be on the field and ready to make an impact for the Ravens.
October 22, 2008
Ravens running back Willis McGahee was limited in practice on Wednesday has he continues to rest his knee, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View:In five games McGahee has only rushed for 293 yards and 105 of those yards came in one game. McGahee owners are not getting everything they expected from the back.
October 19, 2008
Running back Willis McGahee compiled 19 carries for 105 yards and a touchdown in the Week 7 victory over Miami.

Our View:The 100-yard effort was his first since Week 15 of last year. McGahee should be a solid fantasy play during the next three weeks with games against Oakland, Cleveland and Houston.
October 12, 2008
NFL.com reports Willis McGahee left Sunday's game in the first drive of the third quarter and didn't return. His specific injury was unknown.

Our View:The Ravens may have just been conceding since they were down by 24 points at halftime, but that is just speculation at this point. We will continue to follow the situation.
October 9, 2008
NFL.com reports that Willis McGahee took part in a full practice on Thursday. He has been hit by chest and eye injuries the last two weeks while still trying to fully recover from offseason knee surgery, appears to be as healthy as he has all season. “You know, [McGahee is] healthy,” Offensive coordinator Cam Cameron said Thursday. “And he was healthy last week. He’s not 100 percent, but probably there aren’t many backs at this stage who are. But he’s healthier this week than he was last week, and he’s getting ready to play. I think he’ll have a heck of a ball game.”

Our View:McGahee should be ready to rock this week and should be in your lineups. He has been a disappointment to this point but should break out of his slump against the Bob Sanders-less Colts this week.
October 9, 2008
Willis McGahee was limited in Wednesday's practice while nursing his ailing knee and chest, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View:McGahee may be banged up for Week 6, but does have a very favorable match-up against the Colts' 32nd ranked run defense.
October 5, 2008
NFL Network’s Adam Schefter is reporting that Willis McGahee (chest, questionable) will be active against Tennessee. A Ravens official emailed Schefter and said it looks like McGahee will even start.

Our View:McGahee has been hindered by various injuries this season, and was limited in practice this week. Throw in the double tough match-up against Tennessee, and his fantasy prospects appear grim for this week.
October 2, 2008
Willis McGahee was limited in Thursday's practice due to his rib ailment, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View:Offensive coordinator Cam Cameron believes McGahee will be ready to play this weekend against Tennessee. The team will get a better idea regarding his status for Week 5 following Friday's practice.
October 2, 2008
Ravens running back Willis McGahee was none too pleased when he found out ESPN reporter Suzy Kolber reported that it was possible he was getting injured because he did not take part in offseason workouts, according to the Baltimore Sun. "She's never played a day in the NFL. Why would I listen to her?" McGahee asked.

Our View:McGahee had a knee problem in camp, then suffered from an eye injury, and now is dealing with sore ribs, and is labeled as day-to-day. He may miss the team's Week 5 contest.
October 1, 2008
Willis McGahee was limited in practice on Wednesday as the Ravens prepare for Week 5, according to the Baltimore Sun. During the Ravens loss to the Steelers, McGahee missed a good portion of the game due to some injured ribs and has had a rough start to the 2008 season.

Our View:There is no news on the status of McGahee for Week 5 but you need to keep an eye on his status throughout the week.
September 30, 2008
Ravens running back Willis McGahee has an injury to his ribs, and the team will monitor his situation, according to the Baltimore Sun. "He's got a rib issue. We think he's going to be OK. We'll just have to see how the rib goes this week," said Baltimore coach John Harbaugh.

Our View:McGahee's status is unknown for the team's Week 5 game against the Titans, but we will keep you updated when more is known.
September 29, 2008
Willis McGahee left Monday night's game against the Steelers with a chest injury just before halftime.

Our View:If he is unable to go, expect LeRon McClain to take over the bulk of the running game in the second half.
September 29, 2008
Willis McGahee will start tonight's AFC North battle with the Steelers despite having a lacerated eyelid, according to Michelle Tafoya of ESPN.

Our View:Rookie Ray Rice and bruiser Le'Ron McClain will be in the mix, but McGahee looks to get the majority of the workload.
September 26, 2008
Willis McGahee (eye) still isn't certain that he will be able to play on Monday night against the Steelers, according to The Baltimore Sun. "I don't know how it's going to be, to tell you the truth," said McGahee, who wore sunglasses. "I'm going to go out here and try to practice and see what goes on after that."

Our View:McGahee has been limited at practice all this week though perhaps the extra day off will be a bonus. At this point, Ray Rice and Le'Ron McClain appear to be the best options in the Ravens backfield, though with McClain dealing with some issues of his own, Rice might be the best play off the bench in Week 4 in a tough matchup.
September 25, 2008
Willis McGahee may not be able to play in the Ravens contest Monday night against the Steelers because of his swollen eye, according to the Baltimore Sun. "As long as he can see, he'll play. But if he can't, he's not going to be able to play. So, we'll have to try to get that swelling down," said Ravens coach John Harbaugh.

Our View:The team is sending in a copy of the video to league officials, as they believe Cleveland players intentionally caused the injury. If he can't go, Le'Ron McClain and Ray Rice would handle the workload.
September 24, 2008
Willis McGahee was limited in practice Wednesday while dealing with his eye injury, according to the Ravens' official website.

Our View:He should be ready to work in the rotation at running back with rookie Ray Rice and bruiser Le'Ron McClain in Monday's game at Pittsburgh.
September 22, 2008
Willis McGahee's injured eye was still bothering him on Monday, according to the Baltimore Sun. "His eye has really swollen up badly," HC John Harbaugh said. "He's got work to do to get that down."

Our View:The Ravens will likely continue to rotate their three backs in the coming week, though there is also a chance that McGahee could end up losing snaps if his eye issue doesn't resolve itself.
September 21, 2008
Willis McGahee saw his first action of the season on Sunday against the Browns. He carried the rock 15 times for 64 yards and a touchdown. He also caught a pass for 11 yards.

Our View:McGahee missed action up until now with a strained hamstring and as coach John Harbaugh promised, McGahee shared the load. In fact LeRon McClain carried the ball 17 times, also for a score and rookie Ray Rice had five carries. McGahee had left the game temporarily in the third quarter after being poked in the eye but he did return. The shared workload should keep McGahee fresher for the end of the season.
September 21, 2008
Running back Willis McGahee left the Week 3 contest against the Browns during the third quarter because he was poked in the right eye.

Our View:The poke occurred after McGahee carried the ball to the one-yard line, which is the truly unfortunate part. Le'Ron McClain scored two plays later. We would expect McGahee to return.
September 19, 2008
Willis McGahee may get more involved and rotate with rookie Ray Rice at running back (starting this week against the Browns), according to the Baltimore Sun. Offensive coordinator Cam Cameron said, "He's getting more reps in practice. Those are the two backs that we're going with (McGahee and Rice). Willis' role will increase. I think today's practice and tomorrow's practice will determine how much of a role he really has."

Our View:McGahee fared well against Cleveland last season with a pair of 100-yard games, and their run defense has already been exposed against Dallas and Pittsburgh in the first two games of 2008. It remains to be seen how many carries McGahee will get in his first game of the season, but he has potential to have a solid outing.
September 17, 2008
The Baltimore Sun reports that coach John Harbaugh wouldn't rule out a tailback-by-committee approach, which could involve rookie Ray Rice and fullback Le'Ron McClain in addition to Willis McGahee . "We're going to use all of our good players and put them in positions where they do what they do well," Harbaugh said. "So we're going to put our running backs out there and let them play."

Our View:This can be seen as good news and bad news for McGahee owners. How can this possibly be good news? Hopefully it will prevent Willis from overworking his sore hamstring and allow him to significantly contribute in the team's final 15 games. Sure, he will have some touchdowns pulled from him early on, but if he proves himself to be superior to the other two backs (which he should at some point) his legs should be fresh enough to finish the season strong.
September 13, 2008
Willis McGahee is expected to see his first action Monday after missing the entire preseason with a knee injury, but don't expect him to have a full workload. In fact, he is likely to share time with Ray Rice and Le'Ron McClain not only on Monday, but perhaps for the rest of the season, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View:McGahee isn't likely to get passed on the depth chart, but it's pretty clear that the Ravens intend to go to the dreaded RBBC approach that so many teams are employing these days.
September 12, 2008
Willis McGahee is expected to make his first appearance of the season in Week 2 against the Texans and wants a full workload, but is uncertain to even start, according to the Baltimore Sun. He is recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery and offensive coordinator Cam Cameron said, "As of today, he's got a role in this game. We ultimately aren't going to know until he's practiced through the end of the week."

Our View:Rookie Ray Rice and Le'Ron McClain performed very well running the ball in the Ravens' win against the Bengals last Sunday, and it seems unlikely McGahee will see 20-25 carries in his first game back.
September 11, 2008
Willis McGahee, who is recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery, fully participated in Wednesday's practice, according to the Baltimore Sun. He was active in Week 1, but did not receive any carries against Cincinnati.

Our View:McGahee looks to see action in Week 2 at Houston, but exactly how much remains to be determined.
September 10, 2008
Last week Ray Rice and Le'Ron McClain scorched the Bengals for 229 total yards and now Willis McGahee wants to get in to the action. McGahee who is recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery will most likely see his first game action of the year this Sunday, according to Ravens.com.

Our View:McGahee was active last week but the Ravens only wanted to use him in an emergency but it seems that he will be in there against the Texans.
September 7, 2008
Willis McGahee, who was active for Sunday's game against the Bengals, didn't take a snap in the game. The Baltimore Sun reports that head coach John Harbaugh stated, "We were hopeful to get him into the game at some point in time, but the way the game shook out, we were unable to do it. He'll practice in a more physical manner this week, and then we should have him ready to go next week."

Our View:RB Ray Rice and FB Le'Ron McClain handled most of the ground work in his absence.
September 7, 2008
Willis McGahee did not have a carry in the first half of the season opener against the Bengals. Ray Rice carried the ball 10 times and caught two passes. Backup Le'Ron McClain has four carries.

Our View:John Harbaugh is a rookie head coach, but it looks like he already knows how to play games with the injury reports and active/inactive lists.
September 7, 2008
Running back Willis McGahee (knee) is active for Week 1.

Our View:We're still not sure how much to expect out of McGahee and fantasy owners should pursue other options. Rookie Ray Rice could see just as much, if not more, action.
September 7, 2008
Willis McGahee is listed as the Baltimore Sun's projected starter for Sunday's game against the Bengals. The Sun also writes that "even if McGahee plays, the Ravens will probably give many touches to running back Ray Rice."

Our View:Fantasy owners shouldn't read too much into the projected lineup. Rice is the better start of the two running backs, although it's probably best to steer clear unless McGahee is active.
September 5, 2008
Willis McGahee is slowly recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery, but is listed as probable on the Ravens' injury report, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View:McGahee could be active for Sunday's opener against Cincinnati, but it was previously reported that Ray Rice is being prepped to start, and McGahee would probably serve in a limited role.
September 4, 2008
It will likely not be known whether or not Ravens running back Willis McGahee will be able to play until just before the game on Sunday, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View:McGahee is dealing with a knee injury, and if he does not go, rookie second-round pick Ray Rice will get the start instead.
August 29, 2008
It is unlikely that Ravens running back Willis McGahee will play in Week 1 due to his knee injury, and he is still walking with a limp, according to Sporting News Today.

Our View:McGahee had arthroscopic knee surgery early in camp, and has been missing in action ever since. Yet another reminder that handcuffing Ray Rice to McGahee is important in fantasy drafts.
August 20, 2008
Ravens coach John Harbaugh reports he has set a timetable for the return of rusher Willis McGahee, but he remains undecided about his potential to play in the team's final two preseason games, according to the Sporting News.

Our View:Harbaugh admits his new offensive scheme could take time to absorb, and as such he worries that this time missed by McGahee could be a problem. He underwent arthroscopic knee surgery after the first week of training camp and has not practiced since. Rumors came forth early stating several offensive assistant coaches were unhappy with McGahee for missing several minicamps, and as such further rumors are coming forth that support a belief that rookie Ray Rice is favored and could be pushed into the role should McGahee continue to miss time. We'll keep you posted as more news comes forth.
August 20, 2008
Willis McGahee is optimistic regarding his return to the Ravens following knee surgery, according to the Baltimore Sun. McGahee said, "I will be ready for the regular season, but I don't know about playing in the preseason."

Our View:This is encouraging news, but McGahee still shouldn't be selected as a late first-rounder in fantasy drafts. If you do decide to draft McGahee with a later pick, be sure to "handcuff" rookie Ray Rice for insurance.
August 19, 2008
Willis McGahee could miss the rest of the preseason, according to the Baltimore Sun. Furthermore, reporter Mike Preston says McGahee does not have many fans in the Baltimore front office because his work ethic is substandard, and it would not be a shock to see him get cut before the end of the regular season.

Our View:With the quality play of rookie Ray Rice, McGahee could be deemed expendable. This news has to alarm fantasy owners who invested a high pick in the former Miami back. It is absolutely imperative to handcuff Rice should you choose to draft McGahee.
August 11, 2008
Willis McGahee will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, but coach John Harbaugh is confident he will be ready for Week 1, according to the Baltimore Sun. Harbaugh said, "We were confident without the scope that he would have been ready. We just feel like this is a cautionary procedure and we want to make sure we're right."

Our View:McGahee ranked as a top-15 fantasy running back, and could provide solid value if he slips in the draft. If you do draft McGahee, just be sure to "handcuff" rookie Ray Rice for insurance.
August 10, 2008
Willis McGahee will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in what is being described as a "clean-up" procedure, according to the Carroll County Timees.

Our View:It is possible that McGahee could be back for the season opener, but no firm date has been set for his return. Obviously, this affects his fantasy status, and it is as important as ever to handcuff Ray Rice to McGahee in drafts.
August 3, 2008
Willis McGahee might end up missing the Ravens preseason opener on Thursday, according to the Baltimore Sun. "Right now, we need to get the fluid out of his knee and get that thing settled down a little bit," HC John Harbaugh said.

Our View:It matters little whether or not he suits up in the game on Thursday, but McGahee might be getting a little antsy given the strong work of rookie back Ray Rice in camp.
July 28, 2008
Willis McGahee has returned to practice Monday, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View:He missed one day of practice due to a lower leg injury. His left knee was taped Monday, but no issues were reported regarding his health.
July 27, 2008
Willis McGahee has been held out of practice with a lower leg injury according to the Carroll County Times.

Our View:McGahee seemingly always has a nagging injury or two so this should not surprise you. Ray Rice, who has impressed team personnel, will work with the first team in his place. McGahee should join practices sooner rather than later.
July 23, 2008
Willis McGahee has been labeled a "little flaky" and not fully able to be trusted by the Ravens, according to Mike Preston of the Baltimore Sun.

Our View:According to Preston, the team is very fond of newcomer rookie Ray Rice who has impressed pretty much everyone he has come into contact with. Seems like the best plan of action would be to draft Rice late as a handcuff, though we still expect McGahee to produce bottom tier RB1 numbers this season.
May 28, 2008
Willis McGahee arrived at the Ravens' OTA session on Wednesday and is participating, the Baltimore Sun reports. He skipped the prior OTA workouts.

Our View:It's a nice gesture by McGahee. For whatever reason, U of Miami guys tend to hang out in Florida rather than attend voluntary team workouts.
May 14, 2008
Willis McGahee and Cam Cameron came awfully close to making out on Wednesday. The new Ravens offensive coordinator is aiming to place even more of the load on his running back's shoulders in 2008. "I'm looking forward to that challenge," McGahee tells NFL.com. "Actually, this is a year I'm really excited about. Out of all my years playing football, I'm (most) excited about this year." Cameron adds, "I'm excited about him, I can tell you that... I think he's just scratching the surface of what he can be, based on what I've seen."

Our View:Sounds like there's a lot of excited excitement going on in Baltimore. Cameron helped guide LaDainian Tomlinson while in San Diego and orchestrated Ronnie Brown's half-year breakout in 2007. Can he do the same with McGahee? Fantasy owners should enjoy the idea.
May 11, 2008
Willis McGahee missed the morning workout on Saturday due to an undisclosed injury, the Baltimore Sun reports.

Our View:We'll be on the lookout for more information. We imagine this would be bigger news if McGahee had a serious issue, though.
March 20, 2008
The Baltimore Ravens exercised a 2009 option bonus one-year early on Pro Bowl running back Willis McGahee, according to the Carroll County Times. The organization is obviously satisfied with the performance and work ethic of McGahee, who has rushed for over 1000-yards in three of the past four seasons.
