Marquand Manuel suffered a fractured right thumb during preseason action against the Packers Friday night, according to the Rocky Mountain News.

Our View:He is scheduled for surgery this morning. Manuel passed Hamza Abdullah on the Broncos' depth chart as the starting strong safety, but it looks like Abdullah will now move back into the top spot while Manuel recovers from his injury.

Marquand Manuel has reportedly passed Hamza Abdullah on the Broncos' depth chart as the starting strong safety, according to the Rocky Mountain News. Abdullah has been unable to practice due to a groin injury, but defensive coordinator Bob Slowik said, "It has nothing to do with Hamza but how Marquand's playing. He's had a great camp. He's really professional. He prepares in the class room and works hard out here. He's coachable and he's been performing well both in practice and in the game last week."

Our View:Manuel could generate favorable tackling totals as the starting strong safety but is not a safe fantasy prospect, as Abdullah can unseat him at some point this season once he gets healthy.

Updating an earlier story, the Denver Broncos have signed SS Marquand Manuel to a three-year contract, according to the Denver Post. Manual will receive $1.5 million a year in his deal, $2 million if he starts. And he will compete with John Lynch and Hamza Abdullah for one of the two safety positions. The Broncos will be the fifth team for Manuel, who will be entering his seventh season. He has played strong and free safety while making stops in Cincinnati, Seattle, Green Bay and Carolina.

The Denver Broncos are scheduled to visit with Carolina safety Marquand Manuel, according to the Denver Post. The organization has restricted free agent Hamza Abdullah in the fold, and John Lynch recently announced that he would play for another season, so safety isn’t a pressing need. Manuel is a journeyman type, who played 16 games for Carolina last year, starting one, while compiling 18 tackles, one sack and one interception.
September 3, 2007
The Panthers and free agent safety Marquand Manuel agreed to contractual terms on Sunday, according to the Charlotte Observer. The Packers cut Manuel on Saturday.

Our View:Carolina is downright desperate for safety help. Manuel will push current starters Chris Harris and Deke Cooper for playing time.
