Newsbreakers
October 29, 2008
Jets tight end Chris Baker practiced on Wednesday but was limited in what he could do, according to the Daily News.

Our View:Last week Baker was unable to play and the Jets had to use lineman Robert Turner as their tight end. If he can't go again this week the Jets will have to make a move.
October 26, 2008
According to the Newark Star-Ledger, tight end Chris Baker didn't play on Sunday after aggravating a hip injury in pre-game warmups.

Our View:The Jets were forced to use lineman Robert Turner at tight end. Should Baker need to miss more time, the Jets will probably have to bring in a real tight end to replace him.
September 10, 2008
Jets tight end Chris Baker signed a contract extension today, according to NFL.com. Baker had two years left on his current deal and with the extension, he added three years to the end of his contract.

Our View:Baker caught two passes in Week 1 for 34 yards but he is behind Dustin Keller on the Jets depth chart. Baker has no real fantasy value.
August 6, 2008
Chris Baker is listed as the starting tight end on the Jets depth chart despite just recently being activated from the PUP list, according to the NY Daily News.

Our View:Bubba Franks is likely to start the team's first preseason game while Baker shakes the rust off. Rookie Dustin Keller could eventually challenge Baker for the starting spot.
August 4, 2008
Chris Baker has been activated from the PUP list, according to Newsday.

Our View:He is expected to be at practice Monday, and will compete with athletic rookie Dustin Keller for the starting gig at tight end.
July 30, 2008
Jets tight end Chris Baker tells reporters he is itching to get back on the practice field, feeling motivated to put the bad vibes of a troublesome offseason to rest, according to the New York Post. Unhappy with his contract and struggling with an injured back, Baker said today he's ready to start practicing whenever he's cleared. "I've told the strength coach that I feel great, I'm ready to go," Baker said today at training camp. "When they say, 'Okay, he's fully 100 percent, let's go,' then I'll go. Physically, I'm fine now and feel great."

Our View:It has been speculated Baker may have been put on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list on the eve of training camp as punishment for his contract stance and vocal displeasure in the media. If he feels as good as he claims, he'll be on the field before long and we will see if he can find the game to reach new offensive production levels.
July 21, 2008
Chris Baker's back has landed him on the Jets phisically unable to perform list, according to KFFL.com.

Our View:Unhappy with the Jets, Baker has made it clear he wants out. If a trade doesn't happen soon, Baker's unhappiness could cause camp distractions.
July 21, 2008
Chris Baker is currently unhappy with the Jets and has made it clear he wants out. According to John Clayton of ESPN.com, if a trade doesn't happen soon, Baker's unhappiness could cause camp distractions if he isn't traded.

Our View:Eric Mangini doesn't need any more distractions than he already has. Stay tuned to see how the Baker saga plays out.
June 11, 2008
The Jets have fined tight end Chris Baker $3,000 for missing an injury-treatment session at last week's mandatory minicamp, according to the NY Daily News.

Our View:Baker intends to appeal, but this is just another stop for drama in the saga that is Chris Baker and the Jets. Baker wants out, the Jets want to trade him, and nothing has been done. He asserts he will be missing any and all team activities until a trade is completed or he is released.
June 6, 2008
Rich Cimini of the NY Daily News believes there is a good chance the Jets will try to trade disgruntled tight end Chris Baker.

Our View:The Jets added Dustin Keller via the draft and veteran Bubba Franks via free agency and believe Jason Pociask is a fine No. 3 tight end, which means Baker, who has complained about his contract situation, could be expendable.
June 5, 2008
Chris Baker attended the Jets' mandatory mini-camp on Thursday, as expected, according to the NY Daily News.

Our View:He is still upset with his contract situation, and is only in attendance to avoid a $8,500 fine. He is expected to talk to the media later today, and the source states that he isn't going to be kind to the team with his comments.
June 4, 2008
Chris Baker said that he intends to attend the Jets' mandatory minicamp tomorrow, according to the NY Post. Baker will attend but is still displeased with his contract, which he believes is below-market of what he is worth.

Our View:Baker is expected to remain vocal about his displeasure with his contract, and could prove to be a team distraction. The team isn't likely to give in to his demands, as they added Bubba Franks, and drafted Dustin Keller for more depth and insurance.
May 27, 2008
Even though New York Jets tight end Chris Baker has been a no-show at organized team activities the team is informing him of all developments in the playbook in order for him to hit the ground running when he does report, according to Pro Football Weekly.

Our View:Baker, who is boycotting the offseason program due to contract issues, has no leverage in this situation after the organization signed free agent Bubba Franks and drafted Dustin Keller. There’s little chance of the Jets caving in to Baker’s demands, and they fully expect him to be in uniform come training camp.
May 13, 2008
Chris Baker didn't participate in the Jets' voluntary workouts on Monday, according to the NY Daily News. The sessions run through mid-June. Baker is boycotting the offseason program because he feels the Jets reneged on a promise to renegotiate his contract. Baker is entering the third year of a four-year, $6.6 million contract. He is also upset that newly acquired tight end Bubba Franks is making the same amount as him on a one-year deal. Even worse, Baker will make less than first-round rookie Dustin Keller.

Our View:Baker has asked to be traded, and can't be fined by the Jets unless he misses the mandatory minicamp next month. If Baker remains with the Jets, his fantasy value will be compromised by promising rookie Keller.
May 7, 2008
Disgruntled tight end Chris Baker boycotted the New York Jets voluntary practices in May but is expected to show up for mandatory minicamp in June, according to USA Today. Baker, unhappy with his salary, is coming off a career-high 41 receptions in 2007, and he’s scheduled to make $683,500 this season and $2.1 million next season. "I'm angry about the fact that they said, 'We're going to do something for you,' and nothing's being done," Baker said. "It doesn't make any sense. I've been here six years and I've always done what they've asked me to do." The Jets moved up in the first round to select Purdue rookie tight end Dustin Keller, and signed veteran Bubba Franks during the offseason.

Our View:The fact that the organization moved up to select Keller sends a pretty clear message to Baker, whose fantasy value will be negatively impacted by the rookie roster addition.
April 28, 2008
Chris Baker is upset that the team selected Purdue tight end Dustin Keller in the first round of the draft, according to the NY Post. Baker said that he wants to remain a member of the Jets for the rest of his career, but finds it hard to believe the team wants him here based on the way he's being treated. The team also recently added Bubba Franks to their arsenal at tight end, and Baker could end up being the third highest paid tight end on the team if his contract isn't renegotiated. Baker stated that he always did what the Jets asked him to do, and he is coming off the best year of his career as he hauled in 41 passes for 409 yards and three touchdowns.

Our View:Baker will be hard-pressed to receive a deal that satisfies him, which is why the Jets added Keller and Franks. If Baker leaves the Jets, he may not find another gig as a starter.
April 23, 2008
New York Jets tight end Chris Baker, disgruntled with his contract status and management's apparent refusal to renegotiate, has left the team's offseason strength and conditioning program in protest, according to FOX Sports. Baker, fresh off the best season of his career, caught 41 passes last season and became more of a focal point in the Jets' offense. He has two years remaining on his $6.6 million contract.

Our View:Good luck getting more money out of the Jets, who spent $140 during the offseason upgrading the roster. The front office exacerbated this situation by signing tight end Bubba Franks to a $1.65 million deal, which is more than Baker is being paid in 2008.
