Sage Rosenfels was efficient against Denver in Saturday's preseason contest, as he went 10-of-15 for 137 yards, according to the Houston Chronicle. He threw a touchdown pass to David Anderson, and also connected with Jacoby Jones on a 41-yard completion that set up a field goal.

Our View:The Texans are in good shape if Matt Schaub gets hurt. Rosenfels fired 15 touchdown passes in 2007, with a solid 64.2 completion percentage.

Sage Rosenfels is ready to assume the backup position again in Houston, but he will continue holding on to his dream of one-day being a starter, according to the Houston Chronicle. "I'd like to have a chance to be a starting quarterback in the NFL," Rosenfels said. "That's the lifelong dream I have. I'm 30. Who knows how much longer you're going to have? Hopefully, I have seven or eight more years, but that is the frustrating part of it.” Rosenfels appeared in nine games for the injured Matt Schaub last season, and won four of his five starts. While some fans would like the team to open up the starting job at quarterback, the Texans are not heading in that direction. General manager Rick Smith said during the NFL scouting combine, that Schaub is the Texans starting quarterback and the team feels fortunate to have such a strong backup in Rosenfels. Bottom line… the team is paying Schaub too much money to sit on the bench, but he will be under immense pressure in 2008 to step up his game and stay healthy.

Houston head coach Gary Kubiak made it clear this morning that quarterback Matt Schaub’s health makes it difficult to trade Sage Rosenfels, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. “He’s important to our football team,” Kubiak said. “Our starter right now physically has a problem, coming off shoulder surgery, so Sage is very important to our football team.” Some of Kubiak’s comments could be posturing. But they also make sense. Why would the Texans, who have playoff aspirations in 2008, trade a relatively young but proven backup quarterback when their starter’s health is in question?

There is a general feeling among NFL insiders that the Minnesota Vikings and Houston Texans’ could re-enter trade discussions for quarterback Sage Rosenfels, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. The Vikings offered Houston a third-round draft pick in the hopes of acquiring Rosenfels just before the free-agent period began, but talks stalled when the Texans asked for a second-round pick. If they snag Rosenfels, the Vikings will have finally accomplished a project three years in the making: finding a veteran backup who knows the West Coast offense and has demonstrated an ability to win games as a short-term starter.

The recent signing of quarterback Quinn Gray doesn’t change the Houston Texans’ stance on trading backup Sage Rosenfels, according to ESPN. Houston wanted three experienced quarterbacks in camp, and brought Gray aboard at the league minimum to be their third-string quarterback. The Minnesota Vikings have offered the Texans a third round pick for Rosenfels, but Houston will not accept anything less than a second-round draft choice.

According to the Buffalo Bills team website, Houston quarterback Sage Rosenfels is said to be on the trading block. The report speculates that Rosenfels fills a necessary role if in fact J.P. Losman isn't with the team this spring.
February 28, 2008
Almost as quickly as they started it appears that the talk of Sage Rosenfels possibly moving to the Vikings have ended, this according to the Star Tribune. Apparently the team was rebuffed so the report speculates that the Vikings might now turn their attention to J.P. Losman of the Bills instead.
February 28, 2008
Sage Rosenfels might be switching teams according to a report on Sports Illustrated that says that the Vikings have offered the Texans a 2008 third round draft pick for the QB. The Vikings have already released Kelly Holcomb, and while Brooks Bollinger is still around, they are apparently looking for a veteran to push third year QB Tarvaris Jackson who, despite an 8-4 record last season, looked far from steady over the course of the season. Still, Matt Schaub was injured an ineffective last year, so it remains to be seen if the Texans would want to part with their safety net.
February 23, 2008
Texans GM Rick Smith said Friday that Matt Schaub is the starting quarterback heading into 2008, but he added that the team wouldn't hesitate to start Sage Rosenfels if he outperforms Schaub next season, according to the Houston Chronicle. The Texans picked up four wins in the five starts made by Rosenfels last year when filling in for an injured Schaub, who needed 11 games to match Rosenfels' wins total. That's just the kind of quality backup teams like -- a guy who can fill in when needed and push the starter to perform well.
