Newsbreakers
July 25, 2008
As expected, Eric Johnson has been released by the Saints, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

Our View:Johnson has been slow to recover from ankle surgery, and the signing of Jeremy Shockey pushed him out in New Orleans.

Tight end Eric Johnson has looked very good in the offseason and could be in store for a big year in 2008 after a somewhat disappointing season in 2007, according to Pro Football Weekly.

Our View:Johnson was not bad last year, racking up 48 receptions for 378 yards and two touchdowns, but New Orleans clearly expected more. His new comfort level in the Saints offense should be kept in mind by fantasy owners, as Johnson has the ability to become a serviceable player.

Eric Johnson informs the Biloxi Sun Herald that he should be fully recovered from ankle surgery in roughly three weeks. "It was an offseason injury which is something that is really frustrating," Johnson says. "I'm just waiting for it to heal up. Just want to work through it, but there's not really much I can do about it right now. I should be ready for training. I'll have about a month to really go out there and run before training camp."

Our View:It doesn't really matter what time of year it is. Johnson is always a threat to get injured. He is talented and plays in a pass-friendly offense, but he is no more than a bye-week fill-in.
May 15, 2008
New Orleans tight end Eric Johnson has experienced a minor setback in his off-season preparations due to having his right ankle scoped, according to the Biloxi Sun Herald.

Our View:Many have wondered just how much that concern has been driving efforts to trade for the Giants' Jeremy Shockey. Johnson wasn't as helpful on offense last season as coach Sean Payton had hoped. It is clear he wants his QB throwing to the short range, so news like this may carry more weight than you may realize.

Eric Johnson re-signed with the Saints on Monday, this according to the Times_Picayune. Terms of the deal were not announced, but the length of the deal is one year. Johnson started 12 games last year and was valuable in PPR formats as he hauled in 48 passes, but only two scores and 378 yards certainly aren't numbers you want to see in your lineup. Mark Campbell and Billy Miller are also in the mix at TE for the Saints.
