Newsbreakers
November 25, 2008
Shaun Alexander has been released by the Redskins, according to the Washington Post.

Our View:Alexander only averaged 2.2 yards per carry, and the team decided to let him go. He held no fantasy value while buried on the depth chart behind Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts.
November 13, 2008
Running back Shaun Alexander practiced with the Redskins first-team offense on Thursday, as Clinton Portis sat out, and Ladell Betts was a limited participant, according to the Washington Times.

Our View:It's a good bet that Alexander gets some carries on Sunday against the Giants, but likely not enough to make a difference in fantasy leagues. Even if he, theoretically, were to get 20 carries, he'd still be a poor option against New York.
November 12, 2008
Shaun Alexander should see action this weekend against Dallas with Clinton Portis "50-50" to play with his sprained knee, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Our View:This is encouraging news, but Alexander is only averaging 2.3 yards over 10 carries and would not be a recommended fantasy option, especially since Dallas will be well-rested while coming off a bye.
October 15, 2008
Shaun Alexander will be active and play in Sunday's game against Cleveland, according to the Washington Post. Zorn noted that Alexander may not be the first guy in to spell Clinton Portis, and said, "I don't count Rock Cartwright out of this. He could be the first guy in." Zorn went on to call Alexander a "tremendous back."

Our View:Alexander looks to benefit from a fresh start in Washington, but will not hold much fantasy value as long as Clinton Portis remains intact. Ladell Betts will remain involved in the ground attack when he returns from his sprained knee as well. FYI, Alexander is trying to retain his jersey No. 37 from injured safety Reed Doughty.
October 14, 2008
As expected, Shaun Alexander has inked a one-year deal with the Redskins, according to NFL.com.

Our View:He will be reunited with Redskins' coach Jim Zorn, whom he worked with in Seattle, but his fantasy value will be limited while serving behind Clinton Portis, and eventually Ladell Betts when he returns in a few weeks from injury.
October 14, 2008
Shaun Alexander is expected to ink a one-year (veteran minimum) contract with the Redskins, according to the Washington Post. His audition with the team went well Monday.

Our View:He would provide solid depth, but would hold little fantasy value while backing up Clinton Portis. Ladell Betts is out for a few weeks, but Rock Cartwright is a solid rusher, and will be in the mix as well.
October 13, 2008
Shaun Alexander is visiting with the Washington Redskins and could sign a contract sometime this week, according to NFL.com.

Our View:The Redskins' Ladell Betts has a knee issue, but the team is otherwise set with Clinton Portis and Rock Cartwright, so forget about Alexander having much, if any, fantasy value.
September 16, 2008
Shaun Alexander and Cedric Benson visited with the Lions Tuesday, according to ProFootballTalk.com. It's unclear whether either will get a contract.

Our View:Alexander seemed to think he would have signed with the Bengals by now, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen. Benson has received little interest on the open market. We're not sure why Detroit has any interest, given that they've already brought in one has been running back in Rudi Johnson.
September 7, 2008
The Louisville Courier-Journal reports that Alexander believes his signing with an NFL team is imminent. The Bengals are one of the candidates to sign him.

Our View:Even if Alexander does sign now, his impact probably won't be felt for at least a few weeks. He could be worth stashing on your bench but nothing more.
September 6, 2008
Shaun Alexander stated he is healthy and ready to play football, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. He had been working out at the University of Washington and said, "I went back to the basics. I’m in the best shape of my life. Speed, explosiveness and quickness. I don’t think that will be an issue."

Our View:He previously indicated that his signing with a team is imminent, and has been getting a constant flow of calls. He is worthy of a flier if you lack depth at running back.
September 5, 2008
The AP reports that Shaun Alexander has no plans of retiring and calls his signing with a team "imminent." He also claims that he has been fielding "a constant flow of calls."

Our View:The Bengals have been one of the teams rumored and they make some sense as Cincinnati is his hometown, they have a mess on their hands at the position, and they could seemingly benefit from a "character" guy. Alexander is 31 and he has not been effective in two seasons. If he does sign, he would likely be a second or third string back and hold minimal fantasy value.
July 1, 2008
Running back Shaun Alexander claims seven teams have contacted him, reports the Orlando Sentinel. "I'm asking God to close doors that need to be closed and open up whatever needs to be open so I can go there, win a Super Bowl, impact the team, impact the community," he told the paper.

Our View:If seven teams have contacted him, they are acting slowly on offering him a deal. Still, it seems logical to think he would be playing somewhere in the NFL next season, though obviously in a back-up role. Alexander may yet have some value for fantasy squads, depending on where he lands.
June 26, 2008
Two years after winning the NFL MVP award, Shaun Alexander may be finished in the league, according to NFL.com.

Our View:The fall from grace has been spectacular for Alexander. He didn't play well for Seattle last season, but you would have to think some team would be willing to give him a shot in a back-up role.
June 17, 2008
Reports indicate free-agent rusher Shaun Alexander may be done as an employee in the NFL, according to CBSSports.com.

Our View:The former NFL MVP has yet to be signed since the Seahawks granted his outright release, but several management figures with several teams report there is no interest of any kind in hiring Alexander. One general manager noted that in his best days, Alexander was allowed supreme blocking by the offensive line and thus needed only to utilize his speed to find success. Now he longer has that speed and teams feel he has nothing left to contribute.
May 25, 2008
All has been quiet on the Shaun Alexander front recently and it could remain that way, according to ESPN. At least one team that has been mentioned as a potential suitor is moving away from the idea of bringing in Alexander. According to a Denver source, the former Seattle star running back is not on the Broncos' radar at this point although the notion isn't 100 percent dead.

Our View:Denver had one conversation with Alexander's agent a few weeks ago, but the organization is satisfied with their tailback crew. Alexander, who has visited New Orleans and Cincinnati, may have to wait for a team to suffer an injury before getting signed.
May 11, 2008
The Saints' interest in former NFL MVP running back Shaun Alexander appears to be more of a fact-finding visit to the Saints facility than anything else, according to the Sun Herald.

Our View:The team supposedly is feeling out the possibility and seeking the different options of the staff and front office, but nothing definitive or immediate is expected to happen concerning the ex-Seahawk running back.
May 8, 2008
Running back Shaun Alexander has returned home to Seattle following two free-agent visits this week, first to Cincinnati on Sunday and Monday and then New Orleans on Wednesday. Jim Steiner, Alexander’s agent, said he would be in contact with the Bengals, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. “We'll be talking to Shaun today and get in touch with Bengals today or tomorrow," Steiner said.

Our View:Reading between the lines it appears that there might be mutal interest brewing here. The Bengals are believed to be interested in Alexander as a possible backup to starter Rudi Johnson.
May 8, 2008
The New Orleans Saints completed their visit with free-agent tailback Shaun Alexander on Wednesday, but he returned home to Seattle without a contract offer, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune. Alexander's agent, Jim Steiner, said the former league MVP and three-time Pro Bowl player has not set a timetable for choosing a team. "It all depends on how he feels about the team, the prospects of the team winning a championship, and what his role will be," Steiner said.

Our View:Alexander could wait well into the summer to see if injuries create more of a demand for his services. Regardless, the 30-year-old running back likely will have to settle for more of a complementary role with his next team.
May 6, 2008
There is a 50-50 chance that Shaun Alexander will be invited for a visit by the Broncos this week, according to ESPN Insider.

Our View:Alexander would likely beat out Selvin Young and Mike Bell for the primary backup job to starter Travis Henry, and he would have a chance to make an impact in Denver, when you consider their history of success at the RB position, as well as the poor durability of Travis Henry. Cincinnati and New Orleans are also possible destinations for Alexander, but he would likely hold the most fantasy value in Denver.
May 5, 2008
Shaun Alexander is expected to visit the Saints on Wednesday, according to NFL.com. Alexander stated, "I will be playing for another NFL team this fall, and doing everything I can to contribute. I am healthy, energized and looking forward to beginning the next chapter of my NFL career."

Our View:He wants to play for his home town Bengals, but he would have a better chance to contribute and potentially make an impact in New Orleans. Deuce McAllister is 29 years old and has missed 25 games over his last three seasons. Reggie Bush also proved he is not capable of maintaining a heavy workload, and is best suited as a receiver out of the backfield.
May 1, 2008
Shaun Alexander will visit the Bengals on Monday, according to Bengals.com. His agent said the visit is "very preliminary," and added, "Shaun wants to get an idea how the Bengals would use him and I'm sure the Bengals would like to talk to him. But there is interest on both sides."

Our View:Alexander previously commented that he would like to finish his career with his home town Bengals, but he doesn't really fit in Cincinnati. They don't have much money under the cap to offer him, and are already set at running back with Rudi Johnson, Chris Perry, Kenny Watson, and last year's second round pick Kenny Irons. Alexander only averaged 3.5 yards over 207 carries in 2007, and there remains doubt that he can still be an effective rusher in the NFL.
April 30, 2008
Shaun Alexander said he is interested in finishing his career with his home town Bengals, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. He will turn 31 in August, and has limited time left in the NFL.

Our View:Rudi Johnson had trouble staying healthy last season, and there is concern about his durability for 2008, but the team is still invested in Chris Perry, and Kenny Watson looked good at times as well. Alexander doesn't really fit in Cincinnati, when you also factor that former second round pick Kenny Irons will be in the mix when he is healthy.
April 26, 2008
Shaun Alexander is on the Broncos' radar, according to Draft Headquarters.

Our View:Alexander's best days are behind him, but he would still garner fantasy buzz if he went to Denver, as their running backs are always hot targets among the fantasy community. Travis Henry has a poor track record with durability and isn't seen as an every-down back for Denver as well.
April 23, 2008
Shaun Alexander has told teammates he has received interest from the Indianapolis Colts and the New England Patriots, according to the Boston Herald. Neither Indianapolis nor New England offers much more than a reserve role for Alexander, but both teams give him a legitimate shot at a championship ring. Alexander will likely receive better offers with the possibility of greater playing time as the offseason progresses.

Our View:From a fantasy perspective, it’s difficult to overlook the fact that the former MVP’s average yards per carry has dipped in each of the past three seasons. And he has missed nine games due to various injuries in the past two years.
April 22, 2008
It's the end of an era in Seattle. The Seahawks officially released Shaun Alexander on Tuesday, NFL.com reports. Alexander, 30, dealt with wrist and foot injuries the last two seasons. Prior to that, he set an NFL record with 27 rushing touchdowns in 2005.

Our View:The Seahawks will move forward with T.J. Duckett and Julius Jones, as fantasy owners were already aware of. The interesting thing will be to see what now happens to Alexander. Will he accept a backup or short yardage gig somewhere?
April 22, 2008
Radio Station KJR-AM is reporting that former stud Shaun Alexander has been told that the Seahawks will release him today, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. The team has not confirmed the news, but it makes sense since they added Julius Jones and TJ Duckett to their running back stable, and his release would save around $5 million under the salary cap.

Our View:It was already widely believed that Alexander would be released before June. Another team would likely take a shot on him if this news proves to be true, but his best days are clearly behind him.
April 1, 2008
Shaun Alexander recently had the cast removed from his wrist but is wearing a splint, according to the Tacoma News Tribune. He is scheduled to have the wrist tested and examined shortly. It is widely believed that Alexander will be released before June.
March 20, 2008
The most likely timeframe for the possible release of Seattle Seahawks running back Shaun Alexander is around April 1, according to ESPN. Alexander is still recovering from wrist surgery, which has held up his release. The expected plan is for Alexander to be listed as a pre-designated June 2 cap casualty. In doing that, Alexander would be a free agent once he's designated, and Seattle would get $4.475 million of cap relief in June.
March 12, 2008
The Seattle Seahawks are not ready to completely cut the cord with running back Shaun Alexander, according to Pro Football Weekly. The addition of running backs T.J. Duckett and Julius Jones is considered step one in Alexander being released, but the 2008 NFL Draft will likely tell the real story. If the Seahawks draft a running back such as Jonathan Stewart or Rashard Mendenhall, then it’s a virtual certainty that Alexander will be issued his walking papers. One other thing to keep in mind, when Jim Mora Jr. takes over in 2009, he is expected to implement a more conservative offensive scheme that leans heavy on the running game. This will make the Seattle rookie (if they draft one) a nice option going forward in dynasty leagues, because neither Jones or Duckett is considered franchise back material.
March 12, 2008
Seahawks beat writer, Frank Hughes, of The News Tribune reported on his blog Tuesday evening that Shaun Alexander is about to be let go. Hughes wrote that he ran into Mike Holmgren in the parking lot of the practice facility as he was leaving, and he confirmed that he did speak with the former MVP. He did not disclose what was said. But he said unequivocally that Shaun is not being released immediately. He said he could not be released right now anyway because of his injury. The sooner the Seahawks cut ties with Alexander, the quicker he can beat the college crop of running backs to an NFL job.

Our View:
March 11, 2008
Jim Steiner, the agent for Shaun Alexander, will meet with Seahawks’ executives about the future of his client in Seattle, according to NFL.com. "We're going to have some discussions with the Seahawks in the next few days," Steiner said in telephone interview. "It will be about the running back situation there." At his end of the season press conference, head coach Mike Holmgren intimated that he felt Alexander could bounce back, but the recent additions of T.J. Duckett and Julius Jones seem to suggest that Alexander could be released during the offseason. During the past two seasons, Alexander has received $18 million in base salary, along with $13.5 through signing and other bonuses – making it likely that the team will be looking to restructure his contract at the very least.
March 10, 2008
If the Seattle Seahawks release running back Shaun Alexander, one possible landing spot could be Cincinnati, according to ESPN. Per ESPN’s John Clayton, Alexander could be an interesting option for Alexander due to the fact he grew up in Florence, Kentucky, and has been popular around the Cincinnati area. Not sure how popular Alexander is these days, given the fact he normally falls down upon initial contact.
March 9, 2008
Shaun Alexander could be cut after June 1, according to the Tacoma News Tribune. The move would free up around $4 million in cap space for the Seahawks.
February 22, 2008
Shaun Alexander will not be released contrary to reports that were circulating. In fact, HC Mike Holmgren believes that it's too early to count out Alexander, according to a report on the Seahawks Insider. "We know he has been hurt and it has affected his play the last couple years. I am not ready to buy into the fact that he hit 30 and all of a sudden he can’t play anymore. As I have said so many times, he is the lightning trod all last season. It is going to be a show-me type of year though. But I am not ready to write that one off yet." Alexander looked decidedly average last season and nothing like the former MVP that he is. This proud warrior will look to rebound from his career worst season (716 yards, four TD), and put behind him the injuries that dogged him most of last season.
February 22, 2008
There was a report on ProFootballTalk.com that the release of RB Shaun Alexander was imminent; however, the organization refused to even comment on the report saying it didn’t deserve a response, according to seattlepi.com. Regardless of the reality or lack thereof regarding the PFT rumor, Seattle has options including bringing Alexander back at his current price tag, asking him to take a pay cut or they could choose to release him outright. Alexander will cost $6.78 million against the cap without restructuring his contract. He would count approximately $2.3 million against the salary cap if the organization decides to cut him.
January 15, 2008
Shaun Alexander will have surgery to repair a cracked bone in his left wrist, an injury that forced him to wear a protective cast all season, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports.
January 12, 2008
Shaun Alexander had another sluggish game in Saturday's loss at Green Bay, finishing with 20 yards on nine carries. He was able to pick up a 1-yard touchdown plunge, but otherwise he wasn't a factor in the game.
January 5, 2008
Shaun Alexander was held to 46 yards on 15 carries in Saturday's win over Washington. The sledding probably won't be much easier next week at Green Bay.
