The Tampa Bay Buccaneers report quarterback Jeff Garcia has been officially excused from the first weekend of training camp, commencing this Friday, according to the St. Petersburgh Times.

Our View:Garcia, 38, has been excused by the Bucs to attend a reunion of players to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Gavilan College's 1973 national championship team in Gilroy, California. Rumors of continued contract bickering seem to ooze from the story, but the beat reporters in town suggest there is no need for alarm. Garcia does want a new deal and has not gotten the negotiating conclusion he stated he wanted to attend camp, but the team seems confident he will show. We'll keep you posted.

Jeff Garcia wants a new contract, and should he not receive one, he has hinted that he might be a holdout, reports Roy Cummings of the Tampa Tribune.

Our View:The Bucs clearly need Garcia to be the starting QB, despite the plethora of other players at that position on the roster. This doesn't sound like a serious situation quite yet, but there is still a few weeks to go before training camp starts.

Jeff Garcia spoke Wednesday of possibly retiring, but it turns out he was referencing the 2009 season and not this year, according to the St. Petersberg Tribune.

Our View:Garcia is ticked off that the Bucs haven't reworked his contract, he is due a little less than $3 million dollars this year, and he hasn't been shy about expressing his displeasure to the press. However, don't panic, Garcia won't be sailing off into the sunset until at least the 2009 season.

Tampa Bay passer Jeff Garcia spoke with reporters today and suggested that frustration over the lack of progress in contract negotiations has led him to consider retirement, according to ProFootballTalk.com.

Our View:The story from Talk quotes a television update from NFL Network's Adam Schefter, noting Garcia is visibly upset and, with one year left on his current contract (a contract he no longer values), is more than happy to walk off and call it a day. Of course, it could be simple posturing, but Garcia had better watch his step. Coach Jon Gruden seems to carry a ton of faith in Luke McCown and there are other options on the depth chart. Garcia is good... but he is old and he may not be in position to play this game.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jeff Garcia may be unhappy with his contract, but he intends to fulfill it and will not miss a day of training camp, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:Garcia has voluntarily participated in every offseason workout. He has one year left on a deal that will pay him a $2-million salary.
