Newsbreakers
September 25, 2008
Collin Balester's start against the Marlins on Thursday was cancelled. The game will not be made up and it's not certain if he will start tomorrow.

Our View:Balester is 3-6 with a 4.83 ERA this season. He will be given the opportunity to make the Nationals' 2009 rotation.
September 14, 2008
Collin Balester was at his best on Sunday as he held the Marlins to just one run over 6.2 innings. On the afternoon, Collin allowed four hits, walked three, and struck out five.

Our View:Balester doesn't strike out many batters at 5.52 K/9, and his K/BB is poor (1.67), so only target him if you are in need of innings in an NL-only league, and even then he isn't a great play.
August 31, 2008
Washington Nationals pitcher Collin Balester went seven innings for his squad, giving up four earned runs and striking out five, but getting a no-decision in the team's 8-4 win over Atlanta.

Our View:Balester is an average pitcher who won't offer fantasy owners much, unless they are in deep NL-only leagues.
August 26, 2008
Collin Balester wasn't particularly good Tuesday, allowing one run on five hits and two walks without a strikeout over five innings. However, he was good enough to pick up a win in the 2-1 victory over the Dodgers.

Our View:Balester has yet to go more than six innings in his 10 starts, but he's had a solid start to his career.
August 3, 2008
Washington rookie RHP Collin Balester earned his second win of the season today as his Nats put the Reds to bed, 4-2. Balester pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing one run on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

Our View:The win brings Balester to 2-3 with a 4.55 ERA on the season. He has seen the sixth inning just one over six starts but has allowed just six earned runs over his last three.
August 3, 2008
A pair of rookies square off on the mound today when the Cincinnati Reds visit Nationals Park for the third and final game of a three-game weekend series with the host Washington Nationals, pitting Cincinnati RHP Johnny Cueto against Washington RHP Collin Balester , according to the Miami Herald.

Our View:Balester dropped a 6-5 loss to Cincinnati on July 6th in Ohio, allowing four hits and five runs in 5 2/3 innings. The 6-foot-5, 194-pounder had beaten Florida five days before falling to the Reds and has not won since, allowing a combined 23 hits and nine earned runs in two losses and a no-decision in his last three outings. Cueto is winless in four starts, dropping two decisions while being touched for 26 hits and 18 earned runs in 24 innings.
July 29, 2008
Collin Balester threw effectively, but still got the loss as the Washington Nationals were beaten 2-1 by the Phillies. Balester went six innings, surrendering just two runs on six hits while striking out five.

Our View:Nice night for Balester, but he has all of one win on the year and an ERA over 5.00, so don't waste the space on your fantasy roster.
July 24, 2008
Collin Balester, making just his fourth start of the season, allowed three runs on six hits and two walks over five innings for the Nationals against the Giants.

Our View:Balester owns a 5.75 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP over 20.1 career innings, hardly impressive numbers. Balester has also produced a poor 1.38 K/ BB ratio which also doesn’t spell success. Ignore him like you do most other Nationals players.
July 6, 2008
Collin Balester was rocked for five earned runs on four hits over 5.2 innings in Sunday's 6-5 loss to the Reds at the Great American Ballpark, with three walks and three strikeouts.

Our View:Balester had a tough outing, but is regarded as one of the top pitching prospects in the Nationals' organization, and was solid in his previous start (his first of the season) as he only allowed one earned run on one hit over five innings against Florida. He is worth hanging onto in NL-only leagues.
July 1, 2008
Collin Balester has been called up from Triple-A Columbus, and will start for the Nationals tonight against the Marlins, according to the AP. The club optioned infielder Pete Orr to Columbus as an adjoining move.

Our View:Balester is regarded as one of the top pitching prospects in the Nationals' organization, and is worth a look in NL-only leagues if you need some help. He will be making his Major League debut tonight.
June 30, 2008
Right-hander Collin Balester will be called up from Triple-A Columbus to make his first major league start Tuesday, this according to the Washington Times. The report notes that it will be an extended audition much like John Lannan received last year. Balester is filling in for the injured Shawn Hill.

Our View:Balester, a fourth-round pick in 2004, is frequently touted as one of the best of the Nationals' young pitching prospects. Bowden said the team has set a maximum number of innings it will allow Balester to throw this year like it did with Lannan last season but would not reveal what the number is.
May 9, 2008
Collin Balester allowed one unearned run in six innings to improve his record to 3-2 for Triple-A Columbus.

Our View:Balester is no longer Washington’s best prospect due to their improved recent drafts, but he is still a refined, solid pitcher. He has a 3.41 ERA in seven starts this season, which is made more impressive by the fact that he is still only 21-years-old. He should get some starts in the majors this season if he stays on this track.
April 11, 2008
Collin Balester threw six scoreless innings and allowed only one hit Thursday at Triple-A for his first win of the season. The former fourth-round pick is one of Washington’s best pitching prospects, and he definitely has a chance to make an impact in the majors later this season for a team that is unlikely to compete.
