September 25, 2008
After two good starts Johnny Cueto was terrible again on Thursday. He lasted just 2.2 innings and gave up seven hits, three walks and five earned runs while striking out just one batter.

Our View:Cueto started out hot out of the gates this season but remained inconsistent all season. He finishes the year 9-14 with a 4.81 ERA. He did manage 158 strikeouts in 175 innnings and should fare better next season.
September 20, 2008
Johnny Cueto only allowed two earned runs on six hits over six innings in Saturday's 4-3 win over Milwaukee, with no walks and four strikeouts.

Our View:Cueto ended a four-game skid without a win, and picked up his ninth of the season.
September 14, 2008
Johnny Cueto needed 115 pitches to make it through five innings on Sunday, but despite four hits and six walks allowed, he permitted just a single run in the outing.

Our View:Dusty Baker's use of Cueto and Edinson Volquez, allowing them to rack up high pitch totals, is starting to draw some heat in the press and with good reason as the team clearly doesn't want to blow out their two best young arms.
September 2, 2008
Johnny Cueto is expected to return to the rotation on Saturday to face the Cubs. Cueto has been sidelined since late August because of soreness behind his elbow. It was later diagnosed as a posterior strain caused by a hyperextension.

Our View:There has been no official announcement made, but the team will probably bump Ramon Ramirez back to Triple-A.
August 26, 2008
Johnny Cueto's strained right elbow is not believed to be serious but he is still expected to miss one or two starts, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Our View:The team will also proceed with caution with their promising young hurler, but they are not considering shutting him down early. Homer Bailey was the most likely candidate to fill Cueto's spot in the rotation, but he is nursing an injury of his own at Triple-A. Nick Masset is said to be a possibility, who was acquired from Chicago in the Griffey deal.
August 25, 2008
It has been determined that Johnny Cueto suffered a strained right elbow when he was forced to exit his start against Colorado Sunday, according to the AP.

Our View:He is expected to miss at least one start due to the ailment. He will be examined again on Friday and the injury was believed to be caused by a hyperextension.
August 24, 2008
Reds hurler Johnny Cueto had to leave the Reds game against Colorado after throwing three innings because of right triceps tendon soreness, according to the AP.

Our View:Cueto is scheduled to be examined by doctors on Monday when the team returns to Cincinnati.
August 14, 2008
Johnny Cueto threw five innings, striking out seven and allowing one run on four hits in the Reds 3-1 win over Pittsburgh.

Our View:Cueto has given up three earned runs or less in each of his three August starts. His ERA is too high and win total too low to be recommended for mixed leagues, but he does have something to offer those in NL-only leagues, particularly because of his strikeout total.
August 3, 2008
Cincinnati RHP Johnny Cueto suffered his 11th loss of the season today as his Reds struggled to support the cause with offense, falling 4-2 to the Washington Nationals. Cueto pitched six innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

Our View:Essentially, Cueto struggled in the 1st inning and pitched well the rest of the way, allowing all four runs in that first set. He now stands at 7-11 on the season with a depressing 5.00 ERA.
July 22, 2008
Johnny Cueto struck out 10 Padres in six innings on Tuesday. He gave up four hits, three walks and three runs but finished with a no-decision. He threw 120 pitches.

Our View:The pitch count could be a bit alarming. Let's hope the Reds do not burn out the explosive young arm.
July 17, 2008
Johnny Cueto did not fair well against the Mets on Thursday. In 5.1 innings he gave up six runs on six hits and three walks. He did strike out six.

Our View:Cueto is among the most inconsistent pitchers going. Hopefully, that consistency will come with more experience for the rookie.
July 9, 2008
The Cincinnati Reds managed to find just two hits in their 5-1 loss to the Cubs, leaving RHP Johnny Cueto out to dry despite a strong overall performance on the mound. Cueto pitched 6 2/3 innings to allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

Our View:The only big mistake was to third baseman Aramis Ramirez, hitting a homer in the sixth with no runners on base. Unfortunately the Reds failed to get the offensive support in line, giving him his first loss in three starts.
July 3, 2008
Johnny Cueto, who retired the first 13 batters he faced before allowing an infield single to the Nationals' Christian Guzman, exited the 5-3 win after seven strong innings. The Cincinnati right-hander earned his seventh win of the season.

Our View:The Reds' rookie allowed three runs on seven hits, walked one and struck out eight in the quality start.
June 28, 2008
The Reds are sending rookie hurler Johnny Cueto to the mound this evening as they face the Cleveland Indians, according to the Sports Network.

Our View:Cueto's last win came June 6 at Florida, but in 17 subsequent innings has allowed 14 hits and nine runs while losing to St. Louis, the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees. He "earned" a no-decision in the Reds' 4-3 home win on May 16, allowing three hits and three runs with seven strikeouts in six innings. He's 3-4 in seven starts since, but, has dropped three straight. Cueto is 1-5 in seven road starts with a 6.49 ERA in 34 2/3 innings.
June 22, 2008
Johnny Cueto pitched very well on Sunday allowing the Yankees just one run in five innings but he was still handed his eighth loss of the year as his offense failed to support him.

Our View:Cueto struck out seven without allowing a single walk, but he was bested by Andy Pettitte on this day. Cueto continues to pile up nice K numbers though the rest of his pitching line has been decidedly average.
June 17, 2008
Johnny Cueto will be on the bump tonight when the Reds host the Dodgers at the Great American Ballpark, according to MLB.com. Cueto is 5-6 this season, with a 5.42 ERA and passable 1.42 WHIP over 79.2 innings, with 72 strikeouts.

Our View:He was rocked for six runs over a mere five innnings of work in his last start (against St. Louis), but only allowed two earned runs in his first meeting with the Dodgers on May 21.
June 11, 2008
Johnny Cueto fell to 5-6 on Wednesday as he allowed six runs to the Cardinals over five innings. Cueto allowed two home runs, five hits and a massive total of eight free passes.

Our View:Cueto now sports a 5.42 ERA, far too high to consider starting him every time he takes the hill. Still, he had gone five straight starts allowing three or less runs, so we'll give him a mulligan considering how atrocious his command was tonight.
June 1, 2008
Johnny Cueto held the Braves to four hits and two runs over seven innings on Sunday and improved to 4-5. The rookie opened with five hitless frames but allowed two solo homers in the seventh. It was his longest outing since April 24.

Our View:It was nice to see Cueto work under control (one walk) and pick up his second straight win. The rookie is showing signs of figuring things out after the league picked on him from April 13-May 16.
May 23, 2008
Edinson Volquez is not only leading the major leagues in ERA, he is also ready to mentor teammates. The right-hander is trying to help Johnny Cueto to calm down. "The Rangers talked to me a lot about being too emotional in the game," Volquez explains to the Cincinnati Enquirer. "I talk to Johnny. That's a problem with him. You've got to control your emotions."

Our View:Volquez's mental lapses were the main reason why the Rangers were willing to trade him. He obviously learned the overall lesson, even if it took him three years. Dealing with adversity can be a tough hurdle for young pitchers and hopefully Cueto figures it out soon.
May 16, 2008
Johnny Cueto ended Friday's 4-3 win over the Indians with a no decision. He allowed three runs on only three hits over six innings of work, with two walks and seven strikeouts. All of the damage came on three solo home runs.

Our View:He has now given up six homers over his last three starts. On a positive note, he also has 53 strikeouts over 51.2 innings. His WHIP was still solid at 1.25 heading into tonight's game as well.
May 15, 2008
The Marlins/Reds game was postponed on Thursday due to poor weather, and as a result the team will skip starting pitcher Matt Belisle and go with Johnny Cueto on Friday, according to the Associated Press. Belisle won't pitch until May 20th.

Our View:Cueto will be looking to turn around a few rough outings that have befallen him of late. He still has 46 K in 45.2 innings, but the nine home runs he has allowed have conspired to push his ERA to almost six (5.91).
May 11, 2008
Johnny Cueto couldn't handle the Mets on Sunday. The rookie right-hander allowed eight hits and six runs over 4.2 innings. Cueto walked three, struck out five, and served up two homers. He is now 2-4 with a 5.91 ERA.

Our View:The kid has brilliant stuff, but professional hitters know how to make adjustment. Cueto is currently trying to figure out his own countermeasures, and it hasn't been pretty lately.
May 5, 2008
Johnny Cueto bounced back on Monday night and had the command that made him a spring training sensation. Cueto was able to locate his 95 mph fastball resulting in a Reds 5-3 victory over the Cubs.

Our View:The 22-year-old Cueto allowed three runs on six hits, walked two and struck out eight in the win.
May 5, 2008
Johnny Cueto will make his seventh start of the season when he takes the hill against the Cubs tonight, according to MLB.com. Cueto has allowed 21 runs over 35 innings this season, but has 33 strikeouts with only six walks, and still holds a strong 1.09 WHIP. His 5.40 ERA is his only stat which is unfavorable right now.

Our View:Expectations went through the roof after the rookie racked up 10 strikeouts and only allowed one run on one hit over seven innings in his first start. He has not won again following that game, and allowed 11 earned runs over his last two starts. His numbers overall are still solid, and he is worth targeting if you can get him for a good price.
April 30, 2008
The Reds re-adjusted their rotation today to give struggling starter Johnny Cueto some extra rest, according to MLB.com. Bronson Arroyo, who had been pushed back, will move up and take Cueto's spot in the rotation on Sunday in Atlanta. Cueto switched places with Arroyo and will start on Tuesday at home against the Cubs.

Our View:Cueto got rocked for seven runs on eight hits in his last outing, which lasted a mere 1.2 innings. The rookie made a seismic blip on the fantasy radar as he racked up 10 strikeouts in his first start, but has cooled off since then, and is going to suffer through rough outings during his development in the big leagues. He still holds a solid 1.09 WHIP and you can use his poor outing to your advantage by trying to lure him away for a low price.
April 29, 2008
Johnny Cueto suffered through the worst outing of his young career Tuesday, giving up seven runs on eight hits and a walks in just 1 2/3 innings against the Cardinals. His ERA jumps up to 5.86, and he's allowed 12 runs over his last two starts.

Our View:You knew a start like this had to be coming. Yes, Cueto is very good, but he's also very young and will go through some rough patches.
April 24, 2008
Johnny Cueto has been dealt another loss today, and is now 1-2 for the season. He got rocked for five runs on seven hits over seven innings in a 5-3 final against Houston. He only registered two strikeouts as well.

Our View:He hasn't won since racking up 10 strikeouts on opening day. He has lost his billing as a rookie phenom, but can still serve as a solid starter this season. He has 31 strikeouts over 33.1 innings. See if you can lure him away for a low price following today's disappointing outing.
April 19, 2008
Cincinnati RHP Johnny Cueto enjoyed a strong day on the mound, but his team failed to support the cause after he exited stage right and thus the win was lost as the Reds fell 5-3 to the Milwaukee Brewers. Cueto threw 99 pitches over seven full innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits. Cueto surrendered just two walks and one home run while striking out five.

Our View:Cueto's performance today is actually a fall from his recent outings where he has totaled 6, 8, and 10 strike outs respectively. He's working at a much higher level and many of us anticipated and has given the fans in Cincy hope for a better tomorrow.
April 18, 2008
Johnny Cueto has 24 K and just one BB through 19.1 innings over his first three starts in one of the most dominating starts to s career in Reds history, this according to MLB.com. "Cueto is aggressive and that's hard to teach young guys," Reds pitching coach Dick Pole said. "He's not afraid to throw the ball inside to either handed hitter. That's something a lot of young guys don't do or know to do."

Our View:Cueto will not be able to maintain this tremendous start, given his amazing 24 to 1 K/BB ratio, but if he keeps pounding the strike zone he will likely continue to be a useful starter in mixed leagues.
April 13, 2008
Johnny Cueto battled through a rough outing today, taking the loss in a 1-9 rout by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Cueto pitched through six innings, giving up five runs (all earned) on five hits, and while the end result was a loss, Cueto posted just one walk and earned six strikeouts on the day.

Our View:Giving up two homers hurts, but you can see the potential that arm carries.
April 13, 2008
The Reds will welcome up-and-coming Johnny Cueto back to the mound for his third start of the season today as Cincinnati faces the Pittsburgh Pirates on the road, the last of a three-game stand at PNC Park, according to the Sports Network.

Our View:Cueto’s two previous starts have been strong, allowing just six hits and three runs in 13 1/3 innings of work. More astounding, Cueto has struck out 18 and walked none, winning the first game and getting no decision in the second.
April 8, 2008
Johnny Cueto wasn't as dominant in his second career start as he was in his first, but he was still pretty darn good. The young right-hander allowed two runs on five hits while striking out eight over 6 1/3 innings. He did not walk a batter and now has an 18/0 K/BB rate in his 13 1/3 innings. It's pretty clear that Cueto is legit, though you can expect rough patches to come.
April 8, 2008
Rookie phenom Johnny Cueto is set to make his second start of the season against Milwaukee today, according to MLB.com. He notably registered 10 strikeouts and no walks over seven innings in his first outing, and looks to prove his performance was not a fluke as he challenges a solid Brewers' hitting crew. He features a fastball that hits 96 mph, and counters with a commanding hard slider and changeup.
April 4, 2008
The Diamondbacks praised Johnny Cueto after the Reds rookie burned through their lineup on Thursday. "That's Jake Peavy-like - he's got that type of stuff," Orlando Hudson tells the Arizona Republic. Eric Byrnes adds, "He's got great stuff. Fastball spotted to both sides. Good breaking ball, threw his change-up. He had everything." It sounds like fantasy owners can expect many more solid outings of out Cueto, as long as he stays healthy and consistent.
April 3, 2008
Johnny Cueto earned his first win on Thursday, as Cincinnati edged Arizona 3-2. Cueto was in control on the mound as he only allowed one run on one hit over seven innings, with an eye opening 10 strikeouts on no walks. His only run and hit allowed came on a Justin Upton home run, and Cueto registered a big blip on the fantasy radar after this impressive first outing.
March 26, 2008
The Reds will open the season with Johnny Cueto as their No. 3 starter, the Cincinnati Enquirer confirms. The 22-year-old right-hander has had a meteoric rise since opening the 2007 season at High-A Sarasota. We love him in keeper leagues, but fantasy owners looking to him in 2008 should expect some ups and downs.
March 23, 2008
Johnny Cueto gave up five earned runs on three hits and five walks in just two-thirds of an inning on Sunday. This won't hurt the rookie's starter status as the regular season approaches, but this is exactly what you get from a young arm. These blowups are what roto-owners prefer to avoid, but reward (young quality pitchers late in the draft) comes with risk.
March 18, 2008
With left-hander Jeremy Affeldt headed to the bullpen, the Reds' starting rotation is beginning to take shape. Skipper Dusty Baker stopped short of the declaring Johnny Cueto and Edinson Volquez starters, but told the Cincinnati Enquirer Monday, "(Cueto's) made an impression on everyone around this Grapefruit League, not just us." Cueto and Volquez, who are now penciled into a starting role, become reserve mixed-league options until they prove they can take the ball every fifth day and show some consistency.
March 12, 2008
Johnny Cueto continued his stellar spring with four shutout innings Wednesday, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out two. The youngster has given up one run in nine innings this spring, with just six hits, one walk and eight punchouts. Cueto is just 22 and has made only four starts above Double-A, but if he keeps pitching like this he may sew up a spot in Cincy's rotation.
March 9, 2008
Manager Dusty Baker said he likes what he's seen from Johnny Cueto, who's battling for a spot in the Reds starting rotation, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. "Who's looked better than him?" Baker asked. Cueto allowed just a single and struck out four in three innings Friday, while tossing 97-mph fastballs, 78-mph changeups and 87-mph sliders. He's outperformed Homer Bailey, Edinson Volquez, Jeremy Affeldt, Josh Fogg, Matt Belisle and Matt Maloney thus far this spring, and Baker's not bothered by the fact that Cueto has worked just four Triple-A games and none in the majors, so he might just earn a starting job if he keeps it up.
