Newsbreakers
December 21, 2008
Ian Kennedy has returned home after hurling 34.2 innings over six starts in Puerto Rico, according to the Journal News. He fared well with a 1.56 ERA, and 31 strikeouts.

Our View:This improves his value a bit in the event that the Yankees decide to trade him. He was reportedly on the Brewers' radar, and the Yankees were notably interested in acquiring outfielder Mike Cameron.
December 11, 2008
Back in early November it was reported that Ian Kennedy was on the Brewers' radar, according to MLBTradeRumors.com.

Our View:This is worth mentioning again, as the Yankees and Brewers are discussing a trade involving outfielder Mike Cameron. The Brewers covet a starting pitcher after losing CC Sabathia (and potentially Ben Sheets), and Ian Kennedy could be mentioned in the negotiations.
August 10, 2008
Ian Kennedy has been sent down to Triple-A Scranton, according to the AP. Billy Traber has been recalled from Scranton as the corresponding move.

Our View:Kennedy has proven he is not ready to make an impact with the Yankees, as he went 0-4 over nine starts, with a 8.17 ERA and 1.92 WHIP. He punched his ticket to Scranton by surrendering five earned runs on nine hits over a mere two innings in his last start Friday against the Angels.
August 9, 2008
Ian Kennedy got bombed on Friday night against the Angels, and afterward told the media that he "wasn't too upset" about it, which has led to heavy criticism, according to Yankees.com. Manager Joe Girardi plans to meet with Kennedy about his start and his comments.

Our View:Kennedy has been horrendous so far this season, and insinuating he does not care is not the way to get anyone on his side. He simply does not belong on fantasy rosters, either.
August 9, 2008
Ian Kennedy was recalled to start for the Yankees on Friday and he was absolutely bombed by the Angels who scored five times before knocking him out of the game after just six outs.

Our View:Kennedy gave up nine hits and a walk on the day, and has looked like a completely different pitcher this year than the one who posted a 1.89 ERA and 1.16 WHIP in three starts last season. Through 10 appearances this season, Ian has a 8.19 ERA and 1.92 WHIP. It doesn't get much uglier than that.
August 6, 2008
Ian Kennedy will be recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to start on Friday, according to the AP. Dan Giese will get the ball on Saturday.

Our View:Kennedy struggled earlier this year with the Yanks but appears to have righted the ship in the minors.
August 6, 2008
Ian Kennedy may be recalled from Triple-A to replace the injured Joba Chamberlain in the rotation, according to the AP.

Our View:He would be called up in time for Saturday's game against the Angels. Kennedy struggled through eight starts with the Yankees this season, but has fared well in his last few outings in the minors, and could be worth a look in AL-only leagues if he is awarded a spot start in place of Chamberlain.
August 5, 2008
Ian Kennedy is expected to take Joba Chamberlain's next turn in the rotation and start either Friday or Saturday against the Angels, the Newark Star-Ledger reports. The 23-year-old right-hander owns a 1.33 ERA over his last four Triple-A starts.

Our View:Kennedy struggled badly when he opened the season in the rotation, and this could only be a one-start turn. Fantasy owners shouldn't be too interested.
June 18, 2008
Ian Kennedy (strained lat) will not be back in time to pitch one end of the June 27 doubleheader against the Mets, this according to the New York Daily News.

Our View:The right-hander threw a bullpen session Sunday and will pitch batting practice Friday. He could be in a rehab game within a week.
June 9, 2008
Ian Kennedy just completed his first bullpen session since straining his right lat muscle last month, according to MLB.com. He threw around 30 pitches under the watchful eyes of pitching coach Dave Eiland and bullpen coach Mike Harkey. Limited to only fastballs and changeups, Kennedy finished with his right arm feeling fine. Kennedy said, "It feels back to normal again. It was a very average bullpen, but it felt good, at least. It kind of felt weird throwing on the mound, because I've been throwing on flat ground for the past week, but it felt good to be out there on the mound."

Our View:Kennedy is scheduled to fly to Tampa, Florida, on Monday night to continue his rehab. There, he'll throw another bullpen session this week, while mixing in his breaking pitches. He would then begin a schedule of rehab games, barring a setback. It remains unknown whether he will rejoin the Yankees or be sent to the minors when he's healthy. He failed to earn a win over eight starts this season, and held a 7.41 ERA and 1.75 WHIP.
June 9, 2008
Ian Kennedy is scheduled to throw a bullpen session today, according to the NY Daily News. He is recovering from bursitis in his right lat.

Our View:Kennedy could begin a rehab assignment in about a week or so, though it remains unknown whether he will rejoin the Yankees or be sent to the minors when he's healthy. He failed to earn a win over eight starts this season, and held a 7.41 ERA and 1.75 WHIP.
June 3, 2008
Ian Kennedy, recovering from a strained right lat, made 35 throws while playing catch from 60 feet Tuesday, according to MLB.com. Kennedy said he didn't feel anything during the throwing session, and he's been relatively pain-free since Thursday. "Thursday, I felt a little something there because that was our first day of really stretching it out, trying to rub things out," Kennedy said. "On Friday, it felt significantly better. Saturday, it felt really good, and Sunday even better."

Our View:There is currently no timetable for Kennedy's return, though it's possible he could wind up back in the minors.
May 28, 2008
Ian Kennedy was officially placed on the DL Wednesday. He has bursitis behind his scapular, as well as a right lat muscle strain.

Our View:Joba Chamberlain is likely to take Kennedy's spot in the rotation. Chris Britton was recalled to help out in the bullpen.
May 28, 2008
An MRI Wednesday revealed that Ian Kennedy has bursitis behind his scapular, as well as a right lat muscle strain, according to Newsday. It is the same injury Kennedy had last September. "Obviously you look at it any time you have a repeat injury, to see what's going on," manager Joe Girardi said.

Our View:Kennedy hasn't officially been placed on the DL yet, but it's expected to happen soon. Joba Chamberlain is likely to take his spot in the rotation next week.
May 28, 2008
Ian Kennedy is headed to the disabled list after injuring his right lat muscle on Tuesday night, the New York Post reports.

Our View:The Yankees could either push Joba Chamberlain into the rotation or call up someone like Kei Igawa for a spot start. We'll let you know when the club makes their intentions clear. Kennedy could be headed back to the minors when he is healthy.
May 27, 2008
Yankees RHP Ian Kennedy has left his start this evening after three innings with a slightly strained right lat muscle, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Kennedy was charged with four runs on four hits against Baltimore, having allowed back-to-back home runs to Kevin Millar and Ramon Hernandez in the second inning. The team has not released information on the severity of the injury at this point. We will update when that becomes available.
May 27, 2008
Ian Kennedy, who is still seeking his first win of 2008, will take the mound tonight against Baltimore, according to MLB.com. Kennedy is 0-3 over seven starts this season, with a 7.27 ERA and 1.79 WHIP.

Our View:Kennedy pitched very well in his last start, which was notably also against the Orioles, as he only allowed one run on four hits over six innings. He is still too unstable to consider for your lineups, however.
May 22, 2008
Thus far 2008 has not been too kind to young RHP Ian Kennedy , but tonight the Yankee hurler showed well and help his team get the 2-1 win over Baltimore. Kennedy pitched six innings, giving up just one run on four hits with four walks and four strikeouts.

Our View:Kennedy walked off the mound with no decision, failing to improve his 0-3 record, but this was his longest outing since April 14th and easily ranks as his best start of the season thus far.
May 22, 2008
Ian Kennedy will be looking for his first win of the season when the Yankees host the Orioles tonight, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Kennedy has allowed three or more earned runs in six of his last seven starts, and is 0-3 overall, with a dismal 8.48 ERA and 1.88 WHIP. The Yankees are giving him another chance in their rotation, but you shouldn't do the same.
May 15, 2008
Ian Kennedy returned to the Yankees rotation but the results were eerily similar to his work prior to being demoted as he fell to 0-3 on the year. Kennedy allowed five runs to the Rays in five innings thanks in large part to two home runs.

Our View:Kennedy only walked on batter, an encouraging development, but overall this outing would have to be viewed as a disappointment given his work in the minors.
May 15, 2008
Ian Kennedy has been called up from Triple-A to start on Thursday against the Rays, according to CBSsports.com.

Our View:Kennedy is a future star, but is still behind the curve as he held a 8.37 ERA and a terrible 2.03 WHIP over 23.2 innings (five starts) prior to getting sent down. He should remain on your bench in his first start back in the rotation, especially while dueling with opposing hurler Scott Kazmir.
May 12, 2008
The Yankees are about ready to recall Ian Kennedy to rejoin the team's starting rotation, according to MLB.com. Kennedy was lifted after throwing 12 pitches in a minor league and will likely be given the starting nod on Thursday in place of Kei Igawa. The Yankees also plan on pushing back Darrel Rasner a day so he will start on Friday.

Our View:Igawa bombed in a start last week, and with Ian having a ton of success in the minors the not so patient Yankees will recall their youngster and hope he can avoid looking like the pitcher he was before being demoted (8.37 ERA, 2.03 WHIP). It would likely be best to leave him on your bench to see how he fares.
May 6, 2008
Ian Kennedy apparently doesn't want to stick in the minors too long. The right-hander held Charlotte to one hit over 7.1 scoreless innings on Tuesday night. Kennedy walked none, struck out eight, hit a batter, and is on his way to a victory as we write.

Our View:It'll probably take Ian more than one outing to convince Brian Cashman he belongs in the majors, but this is a good sign for fantasy teams holding on to the rookie.
May 4, 2008
Ian Kennedy has been optioned to Triple-A Scranton on Sunday, according to the AP. Darrell Rasner has been recalled from Scranton to start today's game against Seattle. They also transferred Brian Bruney to the 60-day DL.

Our View:Kennedy was struggling as he is 0-2 with a 8.37 ERA and 2.03 WHIP over 23.2 innings, with 20 walks. He wasn't helping prior to his demotion, and should not be missed from fantasy lineups.
May 4, 2008
The Yankees are reportedly talking about the future of Ian Kennedy in their rotation, according to the NY Post. Manager Joe Girardi stated, "We will have some more discussions. We don't need a fifth starter until May 10, so we have some time." Kennedy is struggling as he is 0-2 with a 8.37 ERA and 2.03 WHIP over 23.2 innings, with 20 walks.

Our View:The Yankees have three options. They can start Kennedy Wednesday against Cleveland, hold him back until May 10 versus Detroit, or send him to the minors to gain more experience. Girardi also mentioned that it could be beneficial to get Kennedy some work in the bullpen until a fifth starter is needed.
May 3, 2008
Yankee RHP Ian Kennedy is believed to be headed for a demotion to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, according to the Sports Xchange.

Our View:The rumor has been revolving all week long, further enhanced by manager Joe Girardi's decision to discuss his belief that this rotation would work well with just four pitchers on Friday. A reporter asked Girardi if he was hinting that Kennedy was likely to be sent down, and he acknowledged it was a possibility.
May 2, 2008
According to the Yankees' team website, the Yankees will only need a fifth starter three times in May so the team considered sending right-hander Ian Kennedy to Triple-A to work on his delivery. The 23-year-old allowed four runs in 4 2/3 innings in a no-decision on Thursday and is 0-2 with a 8.37 ERA through six games this year.

Our View:Kennedy stated after Thursday's start that he did not feel he would benefit from being sent to Triple-A. "I feel fine," Kennedy said. "I think it would make me more frustrated. I think it's just [helpful] to be out there more and work my situations out on the mound. This past week, I've been throwing really good bullpens, and my work has been really good."
May 1, 2008
Ian Kennedy managed to pitch just 4.2 innings on Thursday as the Tigers were able to score four runs on five hits and three walks against him.

Our View:Kennedy wasn't quite as bad as his final line showed tonight, but he still wasn't anywhere near where the Yankees need him to be, especially with the recent news about Phil Hughes. Kennedy remains someone who should not be anywhere near your starting lineup right now.
April 26, 2008
Ian Kennedy allowed three runs on four hits over five innings of work Saturday receiving a no-decision in a loss to the Indians.

Our View:Kennedy walked four and struck out two and has while he kept his team in the game tonight, he has been less than impressive this April.
April 21, 2008
Due to the off-day on Monday, Ian Kennedy will have his scheduled start pushed back until Saturday, the New York Post reports.

Our View:The move isn't injury-related. The Yankees want to keep Andy Pettitte on a five-day rotation and put someone in between Kennedy and Phil Hughes.
April 19, 2008
Ian Kennedy earned his second loss of the season as he allowed five hits, five walks and four runs in just 2.2 innings.

Our View:Through an eighth of the season, the Yankees don't have a win from either Kennedy or Phil Hughes. Kennedy has thrown 14 innings and allowed 32 baserunners, and that my friends works out to a 2.29 WHIP.
April 16, 2008
Ian Kennedy is on schedule to start on Saturday, according to the NY Daily News. He reported no problems after being hit under his right hip by a line drive on Monday night.

Our View:This is good news for the Yankees' young hurler.
April 14, 2008
Ian Kennedy left Monday's outing in the seventh inning after taking a line drive off his right hip, the Ticker notes. He allowed eight hits and three runs over six full frames.

Our View:The key part of the note is that Kennedy actually made it into the seventh inning. The rookie right-hander struggled in his first two starts, but he was sharper on Monday night. We'll update his injury status when more is known.
April 9, 2008
Ian Kennedy may have been scratched from the start, but he still got in the game, pitching 3.0 innings of relief after Kyle Farnsworth surrendered two runs on four hits over two innings. Kennedy pitched the final three innings, allowing two runs on two hits with two walks surrendered and three strike outs earned. Kennedy’s ERA still comes in at an astronomical 13.50, but the ability to come in and concentrate despite the circumstances, throwing 32 strikes on 52 pitches, shows he has the game to compete.
April 9, 2008
RHP Ian Kennedy was scratched from his scheduled start this evening against the Kansas City Royals, according to MLB.com. This was to be Kennedy’s second start of the season, but he was pulled in favor of RHP Brian Bruney. An unnamed official from the Yankees states manager Joe Girardi was concerned about a projected rain storm and thus preferred to go with Bruney. Kennedy struggled in his first outing, pulled after just 2 1/3 innings, and that could be cause for concern in this situation. Girardi may have a point and seems to have the interest of his young hurler at heart.
April 4, 2008
Ian Kennedy gave up just four runs in his three starts last year. On his first start of 2008 he gave up six. The righty pitched just 2 1/3 innings, allowing four hits and four walks while striking out two. Kennedy relies on pinpoint control to be successful, and he didn't have it Friday.
March 25, 2008
Ian Kennedy suffered through a tough outing on Tuesday against Cleveland as he allowed four runs on five hits (one home run) over 4.2 innings, with three strikeouts and four walks. His spring ERA still holds strong at 2.00 and he should still be a top contender for the fifth rotation spot.
March 20, 2008
Ian Kennedy earned his first win of the spring on Thursday as he only allowed one run on six hits over 4.1 innings against Toronto, with four strikeouts and no walks. Today's performance will help his solidify his bid for the fifth spot in the rotation.
March 15, 2008
Ian Kennedy was dealt his first loss of the spring against the Rays on Saturday, but had a favorable outing as he only allowed two runs on three hits over three innings, with five strikeouts and two walks. Both of the runs came on solo home runs (to Eric Hinske and Chris Richard). He continues to pitch well in his bid for the fifth spot in the Yankees' rotation.
March 11, 2008
Ian Kennedy continues to pitch well and has further solidified his bid for the fifth spot in the Yankees rotation. He pitched four scoreless innings out of the pen on Monday and has only surrendered one run in six innings.
March 5, 2008
Ian Kennedy started and went two innings for the Yankees on Wednesday as he allowed two hits and one run against the Twins. Kennedy is trying to solidify his spot in the starting rotation with a big spring, so a couple more outings along this line should do the trick.
January 6, 2008
Ian Kennedy and Mike Mussina will head to spring training in competition for the final spot in the Yankees rotation, according to the New York Daily News. Kennedy certainly seems like the upside play here, but a lot can change between now and then - teammates could get hurt, the Yanks could get a deal done for Johan Santana, etc.
