September 21, 2008
Jay Bruce was hit in the hand with a pitch on Saturday, and he is not in the Reds' starting lineup Sunday, according to Reds.com.

Our View:There was no serious damage to Bruce's hand, and manager Dusty Baker is simply being safe.
September 20, 2008
Jay Bruce left Saturday's game against Milwaukee in the sixth inning with an undisclosed injury, according to the AP.

Our View:He was hit by a pitch in the fourth inning, but no details were given regarding the injury.
September 19, 2008
Jay Bruce homered twice against the Brewers on Friday bringing his total to 21 on the year. They were his only two hits of the game.

Our View:September marks his best month since his first although he is hitting just .288. He has seven home runs in 16 games this month.
September 17, 2008
Jay Bruce went deep for the 19th time this year on Wednesday night against the Cardinals and now has driven in 49 runs.

Our View:To close out the 2008 season the rookie Bruce, has hit .304 in September and has had four home runs in the month. With all of the experience he has gained this year he will be primed for a breakout season in 2009.
September 14, 2008
Jay Bruce went deep for the 18th time this season on Sunday as he also knocked in his 48th run of the year for the Reds.

Our View:Bruce has had a fine rookie season (.260-18-48-57-3 in 374) though he has failed to excite much since his amazing start. Still, he is primed to produce some big numbers next season, that is if he can improve his terrible plate discipline (0.32 BB/K ratio).
September 9, 2008
Jay Bruce filled up the box score against the Brewers on Tuesday night. Bruce had two hits, an RBI, scored a run, walked once, and hit his 17th home run on the year.

Our View:Bruce has had a good rookie season and but is probably not a factor for fantasy owners down the stretch.
September 5, 2008
Jay Bruce hit his first career grand slam on Friday night off of Jon Lieber. He was 2-for-3 with four RBI and a walk in the Reds 10-2 victory over the Cubs. He also had two errors giving him nine on the season.

Our View:Bruce had a miserable August in which he hit just .227 but has rebounded thus far in September. He is hitting .400 in the young month.
September 4, 2008
Jay Bruce hit his 15th home run of the season today against the Pirates, his first since August 23.

Our View:Bruce had the opportunity to drive in a lot more runs than just the one. Bruce stranded six runners on base today.
August 28, 2008
Jay Bruce went 1-for-4 with an RBI in Thursday's 3-2 loss to Houston. His hit went for a triple, the first of his major league career.

Our View:That was only his third extra base hit (the other two were homers) over his last 13 games.
August 24, 2008
The Golden Sombrero is given to players who have struck out four times in one game, and the newest recipient of the award is Cincinnati outfielder Jay Bruce, who accomplished the feat in an 0-for-5 day as the Reds lost to the Rockies.

Our View:After a spectacular May and early June, Bruce has cooled off, at least in the batting average department. He does have seven homers on the month, but his OBP is getting dangerously close to falling under .300.
August 23, 2008
Jay Bruce had a solo homer and two-RBI single in Saturday's loss to the Rockies. It was Bruce's 14th bomb of the year.

Our View:August has been Bruce's most productive month, as he has hit seven homers and drive in 15, though he is just hitting .241 over the span.
August 20, 2008
The Cincinnati Reds have written a letter to their fans, posted on their web site, that asks them to be patient with the team even though they have not made the playoffs since 1995, according to the AP. "By executing these inevitable changes now, we secured more players as part of our focus towards building a deeper, stronger inventory of young talent," the letter said.

Our View:The letter also said that the team traded Ken Griffey, Jr. and Adam Dunn for the benefit of 2009 and later seasons. It would seem that they still have a ways to go before being back in the thick of things, but they do have some quality young players that fantasy owners could become accustomed to using, such as Edinson Volquez, Brandon Phillips and Jay Bruce.
August 8, 2008
Jay Bruce had a single in the first inning on Friday night to extend his current hitting streak to 12 games for the Reds.

Our View:During the streak Bruce has produced four bombs and eight RBI. Bruce is certainly hitting better, he's back to .274 overall, but his OPS is still below .800 and he has only two stolen bases while being caught four times.
August 6, 2008
Jay Bruce went 2-for-4 with three RBI in Wednesday's 6-3 loss to Milwaukee. He hit a double and a two-run homer, and was the lone source of scoring for the Reds.

Our View:The rookie crushed his fourth homer over his last seven contests, and extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
August 4, 2008
Jay Bruce went 1-for-2 with a home run, scored two runs, drove in two, walked and struck out in Cincinnati's 6-3 win over the Brewers.

Our View:Bruce now has a hit in eight consecutive games. Not surprisingly, he had not struck out during that time until tonight. His first week in the bigs caused expectations that were far too high, but he is still a useful fantasy asset.
August 2, 2008
Jay Bruce went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in Saturday's 10-6 loss to the Nationals. His other hit went for a single.

Our View:Bruce has registered a hit in six straight games, and has homered in each of his last two. The rookie should return to starting lineups in NL-only leagues for the new fantasy week.
August 1, 2008
Jay Bruce hit his eighth home run of the year for the Reds though he only went 1-for-4 to drop his average to .267.

Our View:After going 11-for-19 to start his career, Bruce is hitting just .238 over 206 AB, and that simply isn't going to get it done. He also has just 16 BB against 60 K, and that ratio isn't that of a polished hitter at the plate.
July 22, 2008
Jay Bruce scored the winning run on an 11th-inning double by Jeff Keppinger on Tuesday. He was 3-for-6 and extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

Our View:After hitting just .223 in June, Bruce is beginning to show some life once again. Expect a solid second half from the rookie.
July 21, 2008
Jay Bruce doubled in the third inning on Monday and extended his hitting streak to 10 games.

Our View:It's a very modest streak, but we're looking for consistency out of this talented youngster. Bruce has all the tools to be a superstar. It's just a matter of how long it takes him to adjust.
July 18, 2008
Jay Bruce reached base three teims with two hits and a walk in five plate appearances in the Reds 5-2 victory over the Mets on Friday. He hit his seventh home run of the year and scored twice.

Our View:Bruce raised his batting average five points in the game, and also added another strikeout. He will have his ups and downs, but remains a solid option in fantasy leagues.
July 11, 2008
Jay Bruce scored three times including the go ahead run when he crossed the plate on a wild pitch in the eigth.

Our View:Bruce was only 1-for-4 but any signs of life from him at this point are a good thing.
July 10, 2008
Jay Bruce's batting average is all the way down to .265 as he has managed to bat only .219 over his last 132 AB, according to MLB.com. "This is probably the most difficult it's been so far," Bruce said. "It's to be expected. It's the big leagues. I don't have any doubt I will be successful. It's just about making adjustments and how quick I can make them."

Our View:Well up until this point, any changes he has made have been completely ineffective. Bruce's average continues to fall as his strikeouts continue to rise with 43 in just 151 AB. Bruce will eventually figure things out, he is too talented not to, but it may not happen this season.
July 8, 2008
Jay Bruce was 0-for-4 with four whiffs Tuesday against Chicago.

Our View:Astonishingly, his batting average is nearly 200 points lower than it was a month ago when he was enjoying an incredible start to his major league career.
July 7, 2008
Jay Bruce was not in the Reds' lineup Sunday, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. Manager Dusty Baker said, "It's not really a day off. This is just Jay's turn in the rotation, I like to call it. I'm trying to do it where everybody plays and we have the best lineup and also at the same time nobody's off more than a couple days so they don't lose their stroke."

Our View:So Bruce was not benched for going 0-for-5 on Saturday, and only registering one hit over his last three games.
July 2, 2008
Jay Bruce went 2-for-4 with four RBI in Wednesday's 9-5 loss to the Pirates. Both of his hits went for home runs.

Our View:Bruce stumbled a bit as of late, but is now back on track, as he racked up two hits in three of his last four games, and snapped a 14-game drought in the home run department. He should be penciled back into your starting lineups.
June 29, 2008
Jay Bruce was not in Sunday's starting lineup as Manager Dusty Baker wanted to give him a game off, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Indians' hurler Aaron Laffey is tough on lefties, and Bruce is only 8-for-51 (.157) over his last 13 games. Bruce will spend the day watching video and working on hitting.
June 26, 2008
Jay Bruce started his major league career with aplomb, but after going 0-for-3 with two strikeouts against the Blue Jays, Bruce's numbers continue to sink, as he is now hitting below .300 for the first time this season.

Our View:Bruce has hit .169 since June 8, going 11-for-65 in that span. Making matters worse is his inability to make contact, having struck out 23 times in that span, compared to just four walks. It is well past time to put Bruce on fantasy team benches, at least until he can show a little better plate discipline.
June 22, 2008
Jay Bruce continues to struggle at the plate after a magnificent start as he went 1-for-4 on Sunday to drop his average down to .300.

Our View:After going 11-for-19 to begin his big league career, Bruce has hit just .235 over his last 21 games with an alarming 24 K and just eight walks. The lack of plate discipline is the main concern with Bruce, and right now you are seeing just why many pundits have suggested tempered enthusiasm with the future star.
June 16, 2008
Jay Bruce might be hitting .342 overall, but he has fallen into a deep funk at the plate which includes a .185 average, six strikeouts and only one BB over his last 27 at-bats.

Our View:The slump actually extends back even further as he is hitting just .241 with a .305 OBP over his last 14 games. He should still continue to be a productive bat, but you might consider moving him for a more established veteran bat before the bottom falls out.
June 13, 2008
Jay Bruce hit a solo home run on Friday night helping the Reds to a 3-1 interleague victory over the Red Sox.

Our View:The home run was Bruce's fourth in 68 at-bats.
June 11, 2008
Jay Bruce went 1-for-4 on Monday to lower his average to .381 since he began his major league career.

Our View:Though he has been spectacular so far, Bruce is just 3-for-17 his last four games (.175) with six K and just one BB hinting at the fact that a big-time slowdown could be coming.
June 6, 2008
Jay Bruce entered Friday's game coming off of two straight hitless contests. He then struck out in his first at-bat Friday before finishing the night 3-for-4 with two walks, two runs and three RBI.

Our View:Bruce has multiple hits in six of 11 games since his recall. You didn't think his "slump" would last, did you?
June 5, 2008
Jay Bruce went 0-for-4 in Thursday's 5-0 loss to the Phillies, and has now went hitless in back-to-back games.

Our View:Bruce was on fire since being called up, and was due for a letdown. He should bounce back fine however, and perhaps you can use his mini-slump to your advantage by trying to lure him away for a good price.
June 2, 2008
Jay Bruce continues to prove that the Reds are idiots for not calling him up sooner. The rookie went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and two runs in Monday's loss to the Phillies. Bruce has four straight multi-hit efforts and has homered in each of the last three contests. His batting average actually dropped to .577.

Our View:We echo the sentiments of many Cincinnati-area females. Bruce, will you marry us?
June 1, 2008
Jay Bruce celebrated his walk-off homer on Saturday by going 2-for-3 with a home run, walk, two RBI, and two runs on Sunday. The rookie was also caught stealing.

Our View:We hear good things about this kid. The Reds should probably keep him around, huh?
May 31, 2008
Jay Bruce went 3-for-5 with an RBI in Saturday's 8-7 win over the Braves. He batted second in the lineup, and scored three runs.

Our View:One of his hits went for his first homer. This was already his third multi-hit game of the season, and his second straight. The rookie phenom has scored eight runs over five games as well.
May 30, 2008
Jay Bruce went 4-for-5 with an RBI and scored two runs in Friday's 3-2 win over the Braves, in a game that went 11 innings.

Our View:He made another start in center field and batted second in the order. That was already his second multi-hit game of the season, and he has also scored five runs over four games. He should be targeted if still dangling on the waiver wire in your league.
May 27, 2008
Jay Bruce had quite a debut for the Reds Tuesday, going 3-for-3 at the plate while reaching base in all five plate appearances. He scored two runs, drove in two and stole a base.

Our View:Bruce hit second in the Reds order and played center field. In case you've been living under a rock, this young phenom is worth a pickup in all formats.
May 27, 2008
Jay Bruce has been called up from Triple-A Louisville by the Reds, according to the AP. Bruce is leading the International League in hitting, while batting .364 with 10 homers, 37 RBI and eight stolen bases. His 67 hits are tops in the league, and he also ranks among the leaders in slugging percentage (.630), runs (34), extra-base hits (24) and RBI. The team has yet to announce a corresponding roster move.

Our View:Bruce will bring power and speed to the Reds' lineup, and is considered baseball's top prospect. He could land as the starter in center field, as he was not brought up to ride the pine. He should be a hot waiver-wire target this week.
May 26, 2008
The Reds announced Monday that they are calling up their prized prospect Jay Bruce, this according to SportsTicker. Bruce was batting .364 with 10 homers, 37 RBI and eight stolen bases in the International League. His average and 67 hits topped the league.

Our View:Bruce wasn't called up to sit on the bench. He is expected to take over in center field, a position that has been played by either Corey Patterson or Jerry Hairston. What this means for Patterson is not yet known but the call-up doesn't bode well for the veteran's future in Cincinnati.
May 14, 2008
Jay Bruce had a decent little afternoon at the dish on Wednesday. The outfielder went 3-for-3 with a double, triple, homer, three RBI, two runs, and two walks against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Bruce is 22-for-36 (.611) with three homers and 12 RBI over the last 10 games.

Our View:It's ridiculous that the Reds haven't called Bruce up and handed him the keys to Corey Patterson's locker.
May 11, 2008
According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, the biggest reason for the Reds keeping Jay Bruce in the minors is that they want him to show more plate patience. Specifically, the club is looking for Bruce to have an OBP that is 65-70 points above his batting average.

Our View:This from the team who employs Corey Patterson (career .296 OBP) in center. Whatever. Nice excuse.
May 11, 2008
Jay Bruce went 2-for-4 with his sixth home run of the season for Triple-A Louisville on Saturday.

Our View:Bruce is now batting .328-6-27 for Louisville this season. Meanwhile, Corey Patterson is batting .198-4-11 for the Reds. Paging Reds GM Walt Jocketty….
April 25, 2008
Jay Bruce went 3-for-4 with a home run and a steal on Thursday for Triple-A Louisville.

Our View:Maybe new Reds GM Walt Jocketty will bring him to the majors soon, as the Reds organization is clearly taking a win-now mindset to 2008. It’s probably just wishful thinking. Nevertheless, Bruce is performing as well as ever following a slow start, hitting .338-4-13 with six steals this season.
April 24, 2008
Jay Bruce will not be rushed to the majors before the Reds feel he is ready to contribute and stick with the club, this according to MLB.com. "It's very tempting to think only of today vs. thinking what's right for them and us in the long run, for years to come," manager Dusty Baker said in referring to Bruce and uber-pitching prospect Homer Bailey.

Our View:Bruce is tearing it up in the minors hitting .315-3-12, but where would he play? The team is committed to Adam Dunn and Ken Griffey Jr., and Corey Patterson and Ryan Freel bring the speed that the club needs, and it makes no sense for Bruce to sit on the bench. Be patient if you own him in a keeper league, and those in redraft leagues keep an eye on when the club finally decides to bring up Bruce.
April 17, 2008
Jay Bruce left Wednesday’s game with an injured shoulder, Baseball America reports. The injury is not considered serious, but he could miss Thursday’s game.

Our View:Not too much to be worried about for keeper-league owners and Bruce fans.
April 16, 2008
Bruce was a double away from hitting for a cycle on Wednesday for Triple-A Louisville. He went 3-for-3 during the game.

Our View:It was not the fastest start to the season for Bruce, but he is now hitting .333-3-9 with three steals, waiting patiently for his chance in the majors.
April 11, 2008
Jay Bruce went 4-for-5 with his second stolen base of the season on Thursday at Triple-A. He is now hitting .333 for the year and is likely still the team’s top option in the outfield should a current Reds starting outfielder get injured.
March 20, 2008
Jay Bruce has been sent down to the minors, according to the AP. Many consider Bruce to be the top outfield prospect in baseball, but his regular season debut with the Reds will have to wait. He wasn't going to win a starting job with Dunn, Griffey, and Freel firmly set, and he became expendable when the team signed Corey Patterson.
March 5, 2008
Jay Bruce, dealing with an injured left quadriceps, hopes to be able to return to the field on Friday, this according to MLB.com. "Bruce asked to pinch-hit [on Tuesday]. I said, 'No,'" manager Dusty Baker said. "From my experience, if they say, 'I'm ready today,' I wait until tomorrow." Bruce figures to be a long shot to stick given the recent signing of Corey Patterson, but he still makes one of the best keeper league targets this year as he will almost certainly begin his major league career at some point this season.
March 2, 2008
Jay Bruce had to leave after a two-run double in the second inning Sunday after straining his quad. Fortunately, it doesn't look like the injury is serious. "It's no big deal," Bruce said in the Cincinnati Enquirer. "I felt it rounding first. There's no use taking any chances this early in spring. It's not serious at all." Bruce, who is batting .500 so far this spring, is considered day-to-day.
February 29, 2008
The best prospect in the land, Jay Bruce, has looked good early on in spring training. Bruce had a pair of hits and a run scored Friday and has a hit in all three Reds' contests thus far. Bruce is trying to win the center field job and would be the favorite for NL Rookie of the Year if he breaks camp with the gig.
February 22, 2008
Reds manager Dusty Baker said he doesn't necessarily think they need to take things slowly with top prospect Jay Bruce, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. "Who says they need to be eased in, No. 1?" Baker said. "I wasn't eased in. Junior (Griffey) wasn't eased in. A whole bunch of guys weren't eased in." Baker believes that if a player is ready to do the little things and play winning ball, then he's good to go. The 20-year-old Bruce will battle for action in center field this spring.
