Joba Chamberlain is scheduled to appear in court December 17 following his arrest on suspicion of drunken-driving, according to the AP. Chamberlain was arrested shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday and charged with driving under the influence, speeding and having an open container of alcohol in his vehicle.

Our View:Lancaster County Chief Deputy Attorney Joe Kelly stated that his office has yet to decide on formal charges against Chamberlain. We will keep you posted on Chamberlain's legal matter when more details are disclosed.
October 19, 2008
Joba Chamberlain apologized for "an error in judgment" on Sunday which resulted in an arrest for driving under the influence, according to the AP. He said, "I want to apologize to the New York Yankees and the fans for an error in judgment and for putting myself in a difficult situation. I intend to properly resolve this situation, and do not intend to be in such a situation again. My goal is to focus on pitching for the Yankees in the 2009 season."

Our View:Lancaster County Attorney Gary Lacey will get paperwork on the case Monday and decide what, if any, charges will be filed. Chamberlain’s blood-alcohol content is yet to be disclosed.
October 18, 2008
Joba Chamberlain was reportedly arrested for driving under the influence Saturday morning close to his hometown of Lincoln, Nebraska, according to the Journal News. The 23-year-old hurler was pulled over after being observed as speeding in a 2006 BMW 750i shortly after 1 a.m. on U.S. 77. Chamberlain was arrested after a smell of alcohol was detected and an open container of alcohol was observed on the front passenger seat of his vehicle. Chamberlain was taken to the Cornhusker Place Detox and booked on charges of driving under the influence, having an open container of alcohol and speeding.

Our View:The Yankees are yet to release a comment regarding the arrest. We will keep you posted when more details are disclosed.
October 17, 2008
The New York Post reports that Yankees co-chairman Hank Steinbrenner said one of the first off-season decisions was that Joba Chamberlain will be used as a starter next year.

Our View:Steinbrenner said that before last year, but Chamberlain opened in the bullpen, was converted to a starter for 12 games, suffered a shoulder problem and finished the season in the bullpen with a tight right shoulder. Strengthening the rotation is the Yankees' top priority and many believe Chamberlain possesses ace-like stuff. The right-hander was 4-3 with a 2.60 ERA in 42 games (12 starts). In 1001/3 innings he fanned 118 and walked 39. He was 3-1 as a starter. The Yankees are expected to go hard after free-agent pitchers CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett and may show interest in Derek Lowe and Jake Peavy, who reportedly has been placed on the trading block by the Padres.
October 1, 2008
Newsday reports that Brian Cashman expects Joba Chamberlain to be in the starting rotation for 2009.

Our View:Joba started 12 games this season with mixed results and he rarely went deep into games. With an offseason to prepare for the role, expect Joba to be more effective in 2009.
September 30, 2008
Joba Chamberlain experienced right shoulder soreness Sunday for the second time in the last two months, according to the NY Post.

Our View:Chamberlain is personally not too concerned about the soreness. Chamberlain is open to whatever the Yankees want him to do next year. That will depend on the state of their rotation. There is speculation they will make a great offer for CC Sabathia, and may be willing to target A.J. Burnett if Sabathia turns them down. Derek Lowe is also said to be an option.
September 19, 2008
Joba Chamberlain got his 17th hold of the season on Friday in the Yankees 3-2 victory over the Orioles. He struck out three consecutive batters in the appearance.

Our View:Back in the bullpen, Chamberlain has pitched similarly to last season. He started 12 games in 2008 and came in to relieve 26 others.
September 15, 2008
The question at the beginning of the year was what to do with Joba Chamberlain. Should the Yankees start him right away, or bring him along slowly? Well, the plan seemed to be working with taking it slow. Chamberlain was successful out of the pen and also when he was in the starting rotation, but a late season injury has brought the question back to the front-burner. Catcher Jorge Posado, said that he thinks Chamberlain should stay in the bullpen, according to Yankees.com.

Our View:Now that everybody has an opinion on this matter, Chamberlain has chimed in. "I'm so tired of it." Joba was 4-3 this year and in 94 innings he struck out 108 hitters.
September 2, 2008
New York Newsday reports that General manager Brian Cashman said Tuesday that Joba Chamberlain will not start next season in the Yankees' rotation.

Our View:According toe Cashman, Chamberlain hasn't thrown enough innings this season, so it could mean another midseason starting point for everyone's favorite prospect.
September 2, 2008
Joba Chamberlain has been activated from the DL following his bout with rotator cuff tendinitis, according to the NY Post.

Our View:He will return to the rotation in 2009, but will serve as a setup man to closer Mariano Rivera for the remainder of this season. The team may also consider shutting him down as soon as they are mathematically eliminated from the playoff race.
August 31, 2008
It is likely that Joba Chamberlain will be activated from the DL on Monday, and should return as a reliever, according to the New York Post.

Our View:Chamberlain has fantasy value in any role, but it would of course be higher as a starter. Still, he can pile up the strikeouts in a setup role, and could get some holds for leagues that use that as a scoring criteria.
August 30, 2008
Joba Chamberlain's long-awaited return is expected to come in the next week, and reports indicate he will likely be coming back as a relief pitcher, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View:The righthander, who has been on the 15-day disabled list since August 6th with rotator cuff tendinitis, will face hitters Saturday and throw approximately 35 pitches. If he feels no lingering effects Sunday, he should be cleared to be activated.
August 28, 2008
The road back from injury for Joba Chamberlain took another step Thursday morning. Chamberlain threw a 45-pitch bullpen session and his arm-strength continues to improve after each and every step. According to Yankees.com Chamberlain will throw 35-pitches to hitters on Saturday and if that goes well he could see game action next week.

Our View:It is still not known what Chamberlain's role will be when he comes back, whether it would be as a starter or out of the bullpen.
August 26, 2008
Yankee reliever-turning-starter Joba Chamberlain threw a 35-pitch bullpen session on Monday in an empty Yankee Stadium under the supervision of pitching coach Dave Eiland, according to MLB.com. He is scheduled to ramp up to 45 pitches on Thursday, and said he has started throwing harder just to see how his arm responds. "It felt better than last time as far as strength-wise," Chamberlain said of Monday's session. "Playing catch, you let a couple go, [and] I let a couple go in the bullpen."

Our View:Chamberlain has been on the disabled list since leaving an August 4th start at Texas with what the Yankees announced was right rotator cuff tendinitis. He has worked on a program with head trainer Gene Monahan, and tossed his full complement of pitches. Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that the organization had options of where they could send Chamberlain. Both the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees and Double-A Trenton Thunder have qualified for postseason play, and could provide game situations for Chamberlain to work toward a big league return.
August 23, 2008
Joba Chamberlain threw 35 pitches today from a mound. They were all fastballs and changeups, according to Newsday. "It was good, I warmed up quick, I got loose real quick," said Chamberlain, who is recovering from rotator cuff tendinitis.

Our View:Manager Joe Girardi didn't comment on when Joba would pitch in a game, but the right-hander estimated that it would be at least a week. It's still not clear whether Chamberlain will come back as a starter or reliever.
August 22, 2008
As expected, Joba Chamberlain increased his throwing program to 20 throws on flat ground from 60 feet to a squatting catcher, according to the NY Post. He is recovering from rotator cuff tendinitis and said, "I let a couple go and it felt good."

Our View:He will throw 35 pitches off a mound tomorrow but will be limited to fastballs and change-ups. Manager Joe Girardi does not have a plan for him beyond Saturday, but does not expect him back in New York until early September. At that point, it may be as a reliever.
August 21, 2008
Joba Chamberlain played catch from 60 feet Thursday and is scheduled to throw off a mound on Saturday, according to MLB.com.

Our View:"It's just different being on a mound rather than just playing catch," Chamberlain said. Chamberlain is hoping to come off the disabled list early next month.
August 19, 2008
Joba Chamberlain played catch on Tuesday, just as he did on Friday, Saturday and Monday. He will take the day off on Wednesday and play catch again on Thursday, the AP reports. Chamberlain is scheduled for a bullpen session on Saturday. He is on the DL due to rotator cuff tendinitis.

Our View:The Yankees will likely wait and see how that bullpen session goes before deciding the next move. Fantasy owners will need to be patient with the young ace.
August 17, 2008
Joba Chamberlain, who is recovering from rotator cuff tendinitis, played catch for a second straight day Saturday, while making 28 throws, and said he felt better than he did after throwing for the first time Friday, according to the NY Daily News. He said, "I got loose a lot quicker. It went a lot better than I expected, getting loose and staying loose." He is scheduled to take Sunday off.

Our View:Manager Joe Girardi previously stated that Chamberlain will likely remain in the rotation when he returns, rather than move back to the pen, and the young hurler is making positive steps in that direction in his rehab. He could be back in pinstripes in late August.
August 16, 2008
Yankees manager Joe Girardi said New York hurler Joba Chamberlain will likely remain a starting pitcher when he comes off the disabled list, according to the New York Daily News. "We envision him as a big league starter," Girardi said.

Our View:There had been speculation that Chamberlain would move to the bullpen, but that probably will not be the case.
August 15, 2008
Joba Chamberlain threw 25 times from 65 feet Friday, the first time he's played catch since he exited an Aug. 4 start with rotator cuff tendinitis, according to MLB.com. "It was very good," Chamberlain said. "I got loose at the end. After eight days, when you get out there and throw, you're still kind of leery. But everything went well." Joba is scheduled to play catch again on Saturday and hopes to throw off a mound as early next week.

Our View:The Yankees have discussed the possibility of bringing back Chamberlain as a reliever to reduce the stress on his shoulder. We'll let you know how his rehab progresses.
August 15, 2008
The NY Post indicates that Joba Chamberlain may be moved back to the bullpen when he returns from the DL following his recovery from rotator cuff tendinitis.

Our View:Moving him back to the pen would reduce the stress on the right shoulder. He is eligible to return from the DL Wednesday, but there is no confirmation that he will be ready at that time.
August 11, 2008
Updating an earlier report, it now seems that Joba Chamberlain will indeed begin his throwing program on Friday and not Wednesday, according to MLB.com. "I made the suggestion that he just wait until Friday when we get home, so he's in front of us," manager Joe Girardi said.

Our View:This decision only pushes things back two days and seems to make the most sense as the club doesn't want to do anything to jeopardize their golden armed hurler.
August 11, 2008
Joba Chamberlain, who is recovering from rotator cuff tendinitis, will begin a throwing program Wednesday (moved up from Friday), according to the AP. He said, "Play catch and just go from there."

Our View:Barring a setback, he could re-join the Yankees by the end of August, but the Yankees will remain cautious with his recovery.
August 11, 2008
Joba Chamberlain, who is recovering from rotator cuff tendinitis, will begin a throwing program Friday at Yankee Stadium, according to the NY Post. He hasn't thrown since last Monday night in Texas.

Our View:Barring a setback, he could be back by the end of August, but the Yankees will remain cautious with his recovery.
August 8, 2008
Joba Chamberlain (shoulder) plans to begin throwing next week and hopes to return to the Yankees rotation by the end of the month, according to the Star Tribune. "I'll probably throw the beginning of next week," Chamberlain said. "Everything feels fine now."

Our View:Joba was very confident in his pronouncement that he would be pitching before September 1st. We'll take him at his word for now, but you know the Yankees will be extremely careful with the young flame-thrower.
August 6, 2008
As expected, the Yankees placed Joba Chamberlain on the DL Wednesday, according to the AP. Chamberlain had his shoulder examined today by Dr. James Andrews today, who diagnosed the righty with rotator cuff tendinitis.

Our View:Joba will rest for a week and then begin a throwing program.
August 6, 2008
The NY Post suggests that Joba Chamberlain will be placed on the 15-day DL due to his right shoulder ailment.

Our View:The Yankees have recalled Chris Britton from Triple-A, and since he was sent down less than 10 days ago, the Yankees have to place a pitcher on the DL, which is expected to be Chamberlain, who is in Alabama right now being examined by Dr. James Andrews.
August 5, 2008
Joba Chamberlain will be examined by Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday, the AP reports. The pitcher is dealing with a sore right shoulder, and he underwent an MRI on Tuesday. "He'll take his test results with him (to Alabama)," manager Joe Girardi says. "Until I hear from Dr. Andrews, that's all I've got... I envision him not making his next start. Beyond that, I can't say."

Our View:Yankees fans and fantasy owners are going to be on the edges of their seats for the next day or two. A trip to visit with Dr. Andrews doesn't necessarily mean something is seriously wrong, but it would suggest the Yankees are a bit unclear and worried about the results.
August 4, 2008
Updating an earlier report, Yankees.com says that New York pitcher Joba Chamberlain is suffering from a stiff right shoulder.

Our View:It is not known whether or not Chamberlain will have to go on the DL or not. When word comes, we will pass it along to you.
August 4, 2008
Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain had to leave the game against the Texas Rangers in the middle of the fifth inning with an apparent injury to his right shoulder, according to the AP.

Our View:There is no word on exactly what the malady is, but we will keep you updated when word comes.
July 30, 2008
Joba Chamberlain was in command in Wednesday's 13-3 win over Baltimore at Yankee Stadium, as he only issued one earned run on five hits over six innings, with no walks and six strikeouts.

Our View:Chamberlain is in the zone right now, as he only allowed two earned runs over his last three outings (19 innings).
July 25, 2008
Joba Chamberlain hurled a dominant seven innings and got the 1-0 win over the Red Sox. He allowed just three hits and struck out nine while walking one.

Our View:Chamberlain lowered his ERA to 2.30, while throwing 102 pitches.
July 19, 2008
Joba Chamberlain struck out eight batters in six innings against the A's on Saturday. He allowed one earned run but did not factor in the decision.

Our View:Chamberlain continues to be a strikeout machine but he has not gotten much run support in his first nine starts.
July 11, 2008
Joba Chamberlain lost for the first time in eight starts on Friday. He lasted 6.2 innings and struck out nine. However, he gave up seven hits and three runs to a Blue Jays lineup without Alex Rios or Vernon Wells.

Our View:Although he lost, it was not a bad start for the converted reliever. The nine Ks have to make owners happy.
July 6, 2008
Joba Chamberlain allowed three runs in six innings against the Red Sox on Sunday against the Red Sox. He gave up four hits, walked four, hit a batter and struck out five.

Our View:It wasn't his best start, but it is becoming more apparent that he can certainly handle his new role. It did take him 101 pitches to get 18 outs.
July 1, 2008
Joba Chamberlain allowed two earned runs on five hits over four innings in Tuesday's close 3-2 loss to Texas, with four walks and six strikeouts. He ended the night with a no decision.

Our View:He still hasn't taken a loss over his last five starts, and he has allowed two or less earned runs in each outing over the span.
June 25, 2008
Joba Chamberlain was dominating for 6.2 innings on Wednesday holding the Pirates scoreless while striking out seven in his second victory.

Our View:Through 48.2 innings on the year, Joba has a 2.03 ERA and 56 K as he continues to dominate hitters no matter what role he fills. He threw 114 pitches on the night signaling that the kid gloves are off.
June 25, 2008
Joba Chamberlain makes his fifth start on Wednesday night still looking for his first victory as a starter. The Yankees invade Pittsburgh to take on the Pirates.

Our View:Chamberlain has taken a no-decision in each of his first four starts. He's pitched well enough to win in three of the four games sporting a 2.46 ERA since joining the rotation.
June 19, 2008
Joba Chamberlain only allowed one earned run on four hits over 5.2 innings of work in Thursday's 2-1 win over the Padres, with three walks and nine strikeouts. He exited the game with a no decision.

Our View:This was a great outing despite only lasting 5.2 innings. He should continue to get stronger with every start.
June 19, 2008
Joba Chamberlain will be making his fourth start of the season today when the Yankees host the Padres in the Bronx, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Manager Joe Girardi will not restrict his pitch count today, and will let him throw upwards of 100 pitches, but will keep a close eye on him. It will depend on the difficulty of his innings. He threw six strong innings in his last start (his final pitched clocked at 97 mph), and is a good fantasy option at Yankee Stadium today, especially against a Padres team that will be without Kevin Kouzmanoff.
June 13, 2008
Joba Chamberlain allowed one run on six hits, walked four and struck out two in a no-decision on Friday night.

Our View:Chamberlain threw 88 pitches -- 54 for strikes -- as he continues to build his pitch count as a starter.
June 13, 2008
Joba Chamberlain's pitch count has been increased, and he will be allowed 95 in his next outing on Friday, according to Newsday.

Our View:Most Yankees' starters go between 90 and 110 pitches per outing. So, he can now be considered a "regular" starter, but it remains to be seen if he is ready to go the distance on the mound. Tonight will be an important step for him, and he will of course be on our radar.
June 8, 2008
Joba Chamberlain's second start was better than his first start, but he still wasn't the dominating force he's been as a reliever. Joba made it through 4 1/3 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk while striking out five. He threw 78 pitches.

Our View:It was good to see Joba have better control this time out. He'll get better. Be patient with him.
June 3, 2008
Joba Chamberlain's first big-league start didn't go as well as hoped. Joba lasted just 2 1/3 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit and four walks while striking out three.

Our View:Joba's control evaded him Tuesday evening. He threw 62 pitches in the outing. Once he gets that pitch count up he'll be the fantasy factor that everyone is expecting.
May 30, 2008
Joba Chamberlain will make his first start in the Yankees' rotation on Tuesday, according to the NY Daily News.

Our View:Chamberlain is expected to be on a pitch count of around 65-70 for his start on Tuesday, which the team is hoping will get them through about five innings.
May 30, 2008
According to the NY Post, Joe Girardi and GM Brian Cashman were undecided whether Joba Chamberlain would start Monday or Tuesday. Monday's game is against the Twins at the Metrodome and would provide a calmer setting than Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium against the Blue Jays.

Our View:Pitching Monday offers two pluses. It would move Andy Pettitte back a day giving him an extra day of rest -- and Chamberlain's father, Harlan, will be on hand to watch on Monday in Minnesota.
May 28, 2008
Joba Chamberlain fared well Wednesday in what could be his last relief appearance before the move to the starting rotation. Joba allowed a hit and a walk but no runs while striking out three in 1 1/3 innings.

Our View:Chamerlain threw 28 pitches in the outing and then threw afterward in the bullpen while Mariano Rivera closed the game out. He is likely to start in Ian Kennedy's place next Tuesday.
May 28, 2008
The Yankees will have an open spot in their rotation next week, as Ian Kennedy will be placed on the DL. Joba Chamberlain seems to be the most likely candidate to take his place, but manager Joe Girardi wouldn't commit to Chamberlain until he sees the righty pitch tonight in relief. "I can't tell you, 100 percent, that he's going to take that (rotation spot)," Girardi said. "It's obviously something that's crossed everybody's mind."

Our View:We can't imagine anything could happen tonight that would keep Girardi from going with Joba next week, but we'll update you on his plans when they're revealed.
May 27, 2008
Joba Chamberlain's next relief appearance could be his last before being promoted to the Yankees' rotation, according to Newsday. The Yankees are targeting Chamberlain to throw 50 to 55 pitches Wednesday, as they continue to prepare him to join the rotation. He threw a career-high 40 pitches Saturday. If he reaches 55 pitches tomorrow and is on track to throw 65 to 70 the next time out, it might be difficult to count on getting so many pitches in a relief appearance. So instead of trying to bring Chamberlain in as early as the fifth inning, the Yankees might have him make his final relief outing tomorrow. Manager Joe Girardi said, "It could be, but we'll see."

Our View:Once Chamberlain becomes a starter, the Yankees could use a six-man rotation temporarily, and Girardi noted that they'll have to think about that.
May 26, 2008
Before Joba Chamberlain joins the Yankees starting rotation his pitch count needs to increase. His next appearance is scheduled to target 55 pitches, and could come as early as Tuesday.

Our View:Expect him to reach his 55 pitch target on Tuesday when Ian Kennedy takes the mound. Don't, however, expect Chamberlain to join the rotation for another couple of weeks. He will need to reach 70-80 pitches in an outing, and when that opportunity will present itself is unpredictable at best.
May 23, 2008
Joba Chamberlain is slated to pitch on Saturday against the Mariners, and he will likely get his pitch count up to 45, the New York Post reports. The Yankees have not announced a timetable for his first start, but manager Joe Girardi said it wouldn't happen within the next two weeks. "Your guess is as good as mine," Chamberlain admits. "It's just going to kind of depend on how my body reacts."

Our View:Between in-game and bullpen work, Joba will stretch out his arm, and we imagine three weeks is a pretty good guess as to a timetable. Fantasy owners will need to show a bit of patience.
May 21, 2008
Joba Chamberlain is finally beginning his transition to the Yankees rotation. The youngster pitched the final two innings of an 8-0 win over Baltimore Wednesday, the first step in stretching Chamberlain out. "This is the timetable that we had set," manager Joe Girardi said in the AP. "It's going to (take) him a while to (get) where he's going be - a hundred pitches. But this is what we had planned all along, and we're sticking to our plan that we talked about over the winter and in spring training."

Our View:It will take Joba at least until early June to build his pitch count up to around the 100 mark. Ian Kennedy would be the most likely candidate for a demotion once Chamberlain is ready, though if Darrell Rasner comes back to earth, he would certainly be a candidate
May 18, 2008
Yankees manager Joe Girardi has told reporters that RHP Joba Chamberlain's transition to the starting rotation may be over, at least for 2007, according to the New York Post.

Our View:The Post turned to general manager Brian Cashman for confirmation but he passed on comment. Instead, Girardi folded, stating when asked about the future development of the current pride of the Yankees pitching staff and if he would stay in the bullpen, "It's possible, yes." This is a noteworthy change from the line the Yankees have put forth on Chamberlain up to this point and further adds intrigue to the pitching rotation in New York. If more news on this story comes forth, we will update.
May 14, 2008
Joba Chamberlain struck out the side in the eighth to earn his 10th hold of the season as the Yankees held on to score a 2-1 victory over the Rays on Wednesday night.

Our View:Chamberlain to Rivera is a nice option for a manager to have. When the Yankees have the lead after seven innings, they are nearly automatic.
May 6, 2008
Joba Chamberlain showed his human side on Tuesday. The reliever allowed three runs in one inning against the Indians. Chamberlain walked two batters and got two outs before serving up a homer to David Dellucci. It's just the second home run Chamberlain has allowed in 37.1 career innings.

Our View:It happens to the best of them, and there's absolutely no reason for alarm.
April 29, 2008
Joba Chamberlain's father left the hospital after recovering from respiratory failure brought on by pneumonia, according to the AP. Harlan Chamberlain said Tuesday he was feeling stronger and thanked people for their thoughts and prayers. He collapsed at home on April 13 and was hospitalized. Joba Chamberlain left that night after the Yankees’ game against Boston to be with his father.

Our View:This should ease Joba's mind now, and he can go back to generating good numbers on the mound for the Yankees. He allowed two runs over 11.1 innings, with 14 strikeouts and a 0.97 WHIP.
April 27, 2008
The New York Yankees report RHP Joba Chamberlain is available for work if needed today, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Chamberlain slipped on a wet field at US Cellular Field in Chicago on Thursday and suffered a mild hamstring strain, prompting the Yanks to give the hurler two full days off from pitching. Chamberlain reports today that he feels just fine and is there if needed as the Yanks gave him a loose bullpen session on Saturday to test the hammy and insure he was all good to go. He's there and ready should the Yanks give him the call against the Cleveland Indians today.
April 25, 2008
Joba Chamberlain picked up his first loss of the season after allowing two hits and a run in 1.1 innings on Thursday to the White Sox. It was the first loss of his big league career.

Our View:Chamberlain now has a 0.81 ERA and 0.87 WHIP in 33.1 career IP, so we are fairly certain that you shouldn't worry too much about tonight's loss.
April 21, 2008
Updating a previous report on Joba Chamberlain, GM Brian Cashman said on Monday that the fire-balling hurler will remain in the bullpen for now despite what Hank Steinbrenner wants, this according to Newsday. "Joba's staying in the bullpen right now," Cashman said. "That's where we're at. [Putting him in the rotation is] not something that's going to happen here early on, and [Hank] knows that. We've talked about it. I don't know what set him off."

Our View:The plan has been to limit Joba's innings, and it looks like the Yankees will stick with that plan even with the struggles of Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy.
April 21, 2008
Yankees co-chairman Hank Steinbrenner wants Joba Chamberlain to be in the starting rotation, as of about nine months ago. "I want him as a starter and so does everyone else, including him, and that is what we are working toward and we need him there now," Steinbrenner tells the New York Times. "The mistake was already made last year switching him to the bullpen out of panic or whatever. I had no say in it last year and I wouldn’t have allowed it."

Our View:We're pretty sure Joe Girardi and Brian Cashman have a say in these things, too. Chamberlain is undoubtedly talented and will be in the rotation this year, but the Yankees also need to watch his innings count. We'll see if Steinbrenner's wishes turn into action.
April 19, 2008
Joba Chamberlain returned to the Yankees on Saturday and he needed 19 pitches to strike out two batters in a scoreless inning of work.

Our View:Chamberlain has eight K and two BB in 6.1 innings on the year, but he hasn't allowed a run as he continues to dominate hitters.
April 19, 2008
The Yankees expect reliever J Joba Chamberlain to return for tonight's game against the Baltimore Orioles, according to the New York Post.

Our View:Chamberlain is currently gone on bereavement, having left on Monday to be with his ailing father in Lincoln, Nebraska. He hasn't pitched since April 10.
April 18, 2008
Joba Chamberlain's father is off the respirator and continues to make positive progress, the AP reports. "After several difficult days, my father is feeling much better," Chamberlain says in a statement. "He is still in the critical care unit of the hospital and more tests await him, but he is off the ventilator and breathing on his own. Each day he’s acting more and more like himself." The reliever remains away from the team indefinitely.

Our View:We're not going to speculate on when Joba can return because it's really not important compared to what else is going on in the reliever's life.
April 17, 2008
Joba Chamberlain's father is making progress while remaining hospitalized, the New York Yankees said, notes CBS Sports. Chamberlain missed his fourth consecutive game Thursday night to be with his stricken father in Nebraska.

Our View: New York manager Joe Girardi said he spoke to Chamberlain on the phone Thursday but still doesn't have a time line for his return.
April 16, 2008
Joba Chamberlain, who is away from the team to be with his ailing father, could return to the bullpen this week as his father's health has greatly improved, this according to MLB.com.

Our View:Chamberlain is of to a tremendous start yet against with six hits and no runs allowed through 5.1 innings, and he serves as a tremendous setup bridge to Mariano Rivera.
April 15, 2008
There's no timetable for Joba Chamberlain's return to active duty, which leaves a void in the Yanks' bullpen.

Joba Chamberlain will be gone at least three days to attend to his ailing father, according to the NY Post. His father remains in critical condition after collapsing on Sunday, and the team noted that Chamberlain will be away for as long as it takes his father's condition to be resolved.

Our View:We wish his family well. Pitcher Jonathan Albaladejo has been recalled from Triple-A to take his place on the roster.

Joba Chamberlain has left the Yankees to attend to his ailing father in Nebraska, according to the NY Daily News. His father had collapsed at his home, and was listed in critical condition on Sunday night.

Our View:The Yankees will likely be without Chamberlain on Monday against Tampa Bay, and the team did not state how long he may be away.

Joba Chamberlain is off to a strong start as he held Toronto hitless over one inning of work on Tuesday, with one walk and two strikeouts. He should serve as a solid setup man until he works his way up into the Yankees' rotation.
March 23, 2008
Joba Chamberlain will find his way out of the bullpen and into the rotation at some point this season, according to the NY Post. Yankees' GM Brian Cashman commented, "The bottom line is the guys that wind up in the 'pen wind up there because they do not have enough different pitches to start or are mediocre starters whose stuff plays better in the 'pen. Mariano Rivera was moved to the pen because of a limited assortment of pitches. He is a remarkable reliever. In Joba's case, he has four pitches that in our opinion will make him a very good starter. We felt he was a starter or set-up/closer type when we drafted him. I would rather have the starter."

Joba Chamberlain was dominant in his one inning of work on Thursday as he held the Blue Jays hitless, with three strikeouts. Chamberlain will begin the season in the bullpen, as previously reported.
March 19, 2008
The Yankees made it official on Wednesday. Joba Chamberlain will open the season in the bullpen. "We think it’s where he fits best right now," manager Joe Girardi tells the AP. "He’s a back-end guy. That’s how I’ll classify him now." The news means that Mike Mussina and Ian Kennedy will stick in the rotation alongside Chien Ming-Wang, Andy Pettitte, and Phil Hughes. There's no timetable on when (or if) Chamberlain will become a starter.

Joba Chamberlain earned his first spring win as he allowed three runs on four hits over three innings of work against the Tigers. He had three walks and two strikeouts and gave up a home run to Curtis Granderson. He could land in the Yankees' rotation this season, but will likely start out in the bullpen.
March 10, 2008
Joba Chamberlain is trying to work on more than just his fastball this spring, this according to MLB.com. "I've just got to attack the zone more and trust my stuff, and not be too perfect with it," Chamberlain said. Chamberlain has been working on a two-seamer he learned from Chien-Ming Wang that he hopes will induce more groundballs this season.
March 5, 2008
Joba Chamberlain allowed two hits, walked one, hit a batter and allowed a 2-run homer to Garret Jones on Wednesday. Joba threw only 20 of 36 pitches for strikes against the Twins. “Joba was missing with his breaking ball early in the count, and getting in some bad counts,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “It’s a learning experience.” Momma said there will be days like this. Look for Chamberlain to start the year in the bullpen for the Yanks before being transitioned into the rotation.
February 22, 2008
Joba Chamberlain will be a valuable member of the Yankees pitching staff whether he works from the bullpen or the rotation, and he is approaching the season with that thought in mind, according to the AP. “Everything in life is uncertain,” he said. “It doesn’t matter to me. Just to be thought of in both aspects I think is an honor.” With an aging Mike Mussina, an inexperienced Ian Kennedy and the up in the air status of Andy Pettitte, it seems like the Yankees could use Joba in the rotation, but they are going to make sure they don't burn up his fantastic arm with too many innings so he figures to spend at least part of the year in the bullpen.
February 12, 2008
Joba Chamberlain will prepare during spring training as a starter, but the young phenom will begin the season in the bullpen, barring injury to any of the other five main rotation members, according to the NY Post. The Yankees don't want Chamberlain to exceed his workload from last year by much more than 30 innings. The team will use Joba out of the pen for the first two months before sending him to the minors for 3-4 weeks to stretch him out in preparation to be a full-time starter in the second half. Chien-Ming Wang, Andy Pettitte, Mike Mussina, Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy will begin the year in the rotation.
February 9, 2008
Joba Chamberlain still is uncertain as to what role he will fill this season, but it appears that the team is leaning toward slotting him in the rotation at this point. "All I've continued to say this winter is that he's a starter, we look at him as a starter and we're going to prepare him as a starter this spring," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said. Chamberlain will have a ton of value in either role after his 34 K, 6 BB performance in just 24 innings late last season, though he would obviously benefit his owners if he were stretched out in a starting role. Yankees GM Brian Cashman told LoHud.com that no decision has been made about how to use Joba Chamberlain at the start of the season. It will depend largely on how Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy look this spring. Cashman stated the obvious by saying that Chien-Ming Wang, Andy Pettitte and Mike Mussina will be in the rotation for sure.
January 28, 2008
Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain will most likely start the season in the bullpen, and flex into the starting rotation later in the season. Chamberlain’s big league experience has come as a situational reliever, but throughout the minors and college he was a starter. The Yankees want to limit Chamberlain’s innings this season, so the bullpen seems like the likely outcome to begin the season with.
January 13, 2008
Will Joba Chamberlain start the 2008 season in the Yankees rotation or bullpen? The final decision will be in the hands of manager Joe Girardi. "It's ultimately up to Joe Girardi," senior vice president Hank Steinbrenner told the Newark Star-Ledger. "Joe knows how to handle pitchers better than any of us." General manager Brian Cashman insists he will be part of the decision, as well. Chamberlain is currently being treated by the media as if he will be a member of the starting rotation.
