The Red Sox reportedly don't want to deal Clay Buchholz for a catching prospect, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:That could kill a deal with the Rangers involving Taylor Teagarden or Jarrod Saltalamacchia, unless Texas settles for a lower-profile hurler, such as Daniel Bard.
December 9, 2008
The Providence Journal reports that the Rangers have interest in obtaining Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz. Earlier today, Texas team president Nolan Ryan said the Rangers and Red Sox had been talking trade, but Epstein's asking price was steep. he's a top-of-the-rotation starter who we control [contractually] for six years," said Epstein. "He's very high-priced, and we value him tremendously."

Our View:Simply put, the Sox need catching, which Texas has in abundance, and the Rangers need pitching. Buchholz went 2-9 with a 6.75 ERA last season.
November 21, 2008
The Boston Globe reports that the Red Sox would have to part with Clay Buchholz or Michael Bowden to acquire either Taylor Teagarden or Jarrod Saltalamacchia from the Rangers.

Our View:The Red Sox will need a catcher if Jason Varitek departs in free agency, but it remains to be seen if they will trade their top pitching prospects to the Rangers to fill the void.
November 14, 2008
Clay Buchholz made strides during his stint in the Arizona Fall League, according to the Boston Globe. Double-A Portland pitching coach Mike Cather said, "It was the hardest I've ever seen him work. It was the most disciplined I've ever seen Clay. It was the most I've ever seen Clay grow up."

Our View:Buchholz held a disappointing 6.75 ERA and 1.76 WHIP over 76 innings with the Red Sox in 2008, but looks to make a better impact in 2009, making him a potential sleeper if he can maintain a role in the rotation.
October 29, 2008
Clay Buchholz went five innings giving up one run on five hits in the AFL on Thursday. The Red Sox prospect also struck out three and walked two.

Our View:It wasn't a great season in the big leagues for Buchholz but he is trying to return to form. In four starts in Arizona he has a record of 1-1 and an ERA of 2.60.
October 16, 2008
Clay Buchholz threw 5.0 innings of one-hit baseball in his start in the Arizona Fall League on Thursday, according to RedSox.com.

Our View:Buchholz has now thrown eight innings while allowing one hit in the AFL. He is regaining his stuff after a horrid year in the big leagues.
September 19, 2008
Clay Buchholz will work in the Arizona Fall League to further his development, according to the Boston Globe. Players are eligible for the league if they have less than one year of MLB experience. The Sox have generally used it for Double-A players.

Our View:He threw a no-hitter in 2007, but was a disappointment this season as he went 2-9 over 76 innings, with a 6.75 ERA and 1.76 WHIP. The Sox intend for him to throw 25 innings over a month in the Fall League.
September 2, 2008
The Boston Globe made a big deal of the one year anniversary of Clay Buchholz's no-hitter, but did qualify the report with his recent progress on the farm. Buchholz struck out 10 in his last regular-season start at Double-A Portland, and he will make at least one start in the Eastern League playoffs.

Our View:There is a chance that the right-hander could return to the big club this year, but much will have to do with his continued success.
August 20, 2008
Following another troublesome outing, Boston manager Terry Francona announced pitcher Clay Buchholz, who allowed five runs over 2-1/3 innings in an 11-6 Sox loss to the Orioles was demoted to Double-A Portland to work out his pitching issues, according to the Boston Herald.

Our View:Buchholz has never been able to find his rhythm all season. The team has tinkered with his arm angle, but that hasn't worked. The team did not make a corresponding move yet.
August 20, 2008
Boston suffered a horrific loss, 11-6, to division-rival Baltimore this evening, giving RHP Clay Buchholz a hard time to get started. Buchholz lasted just 2 1/3 innings, allowing five runs (all earned) on just three hits with three walks and no strikesouts.

Our View:Surprisingly, Buchholz failed to surrender a single home run. He hasn't seen a win since May 2nd and has struggled to get on track over these last few weeks, giving up 14 earned runs over his last three starts (totaing just 11 1/3 innings).
August 17, 2008
The game was as ugly as could be in today's loss to Toronto, but the Red Sox identified an opportunity to get Clay Buchholz a bit of work, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View:Buchholz, who has struggled for most of the season, had been pushed back in the rotation by the arrival of Paul Byrd and the rainout on Friday night. The rookie right-hander had been scheduled to start yesterday. The Orioles start will be Buchholz’s first in 10 days.
August 15, 2008
With Friday's rainout, Clay Buchholz will have his start pushed back to next Wednesday, according to the Boston Herald. Buchholz was supposed to start on Sunday.

Our View:Buchholz's original turn in the rotation was actually tonight, but he was pushed back for Paul Byrd. Buchholz's rotation spot will be in serious jeopardy when Tim Wakefield and/or Bartolo Colon return.
August 12, 2008
Paul Byrd will make the start on Friday for the Red Sox, which is the day that Clay Buchholz was supposed to take the mound, according to the Boston Globe. The Red Sox still have not announced their plans for Buchholz, but he has been so atrocious lately, his starting spot is certainly in jeopardy.

Our View:We're not sure why anybody would possess the young right-hander on their fantasy squad, but if you do, now might be the time to relieve him of those duties as well.
August 11, 2008
Clay Buchholz will remain in the Red Sox starting rotation even after being hammered in his last start to fall to 2-8 with a 6.32 ERA, according to MLB.com. "We've been so committed to this guy," manager Terry Francona said. "We're spending our energy, [pitching coach] John Farrell and I spent a bunch of time with him today, trying to help"

Our View:That's confidence for you. Buchholz posses some top flight stuff but he has struggled with both control and how to best utilize his physical talents. As good as the Red Sox are they simply can't continue to run a guy out there if he continues to stink up the joint, so Friday's start against the Blue Jays might be a make or break outing for the youngster.
August 10, 2008
Once again, Clay Buchholz got hammered, lasting only three innings in the Red Sox 6-5 loss to the White Sox. The right-hander allowed five runs on seven hits, including three home runs.

Our View:Buchholz picked up his eighth loss, and since May 7, he has given up less than four earned runs in a start just one time. He has no place in fantasy leagues.
August 4, 2008
Clay Buchholz lost his seventh game of the year to the Kansas City Royals, going six innings and allowing four earned runs.

Our View:Buchholz has undoubtedly been a disappointment to fantasy owners who expected so much after his sizzling debut last year.
July 23, 2008
Clay Buchholz struck out seven Mariners in 5.1 innings, and though he allowed just three runs he wasn't involved in the decision on Wednesday.

Our View:Buchholz looked powerful on the hill today at times, but he was victimized by two long balls, this after allowing just four dingers in his first 10 starts. This was his best start since being recalled, but he still has a 6.60 ERA and 1.93 WHIP over three starts in July as he continues to struggle to put it all together.
July 19, 2008
Clay Buchholz was tagged for eight runs, four earned, in 4.2 innings. He gave up eight hits and two walks in his abbreviated outing.

Our View:Buchholz has not lived up to the promises the team made when they brought him back from his extended stay in the minor. He is 0-2 in his two starts since his return.
July 13, 2008
Red Sox manager Terry Francona said after Sunday's 2-1 win over the Orioles that Clay Buchholz will get the Friday start after the All Star game against the Los Angles Angels. The scheduling will allow Jon Lester and Josh Beckett extra rest.

Our View:Beckett will pitch on Saturday and Time Wakefield on Sunday. Lester will take the mound on Monday when the Red Sox travel to Seattle followed by Dice-K on Tuesday.
July 11, 2008
Clay Buchholz suffered another loss during his return to the majors on Friday. The Orioles, who fielded a lineup that was 0-for-19 in their careers against Buchholz, drew five walks on their way to scoring four runs in five innings against the young Red Sock.

Our View:Buchholz needed 107 pitches to get through five innings. The walks were just another sign that no matter how much hope The Nation puts in him, he is destined to be inconsistent.
July 11, 2008
As previously reported, the Red Sox have recalled Clay Buchholz has been recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket to make Friday's start against the Orioles.

Our View:Buchholz worked on a number of things while down on the farm and had some impressive starts. Tonight should be a good barometer to see just how much improvement he made. He is 2-3 with a 5.53 ERA this season with Boston.
July 7, 2008
The Providence Journal reports that the Red Sox will recall pitcher Clay Buchholz to start Friday against the Orioles at Fenway Park. When Buchholz was sent to Pawtucket earlier this season with a blister, the team decided to give him extended time on the farm to work on his fastball.

Our View:The club started the transaction process by optioning pitcher Justin Masterson to Pawtucket on Monday. Until Friday the team will utilize infielder/outfielder Jeff Bailey, who was promoted to take the roster spot of Masterson.
July 2, 2008
The Red Sox pulled Clay Buchholz from the PawSox game Monday night after the right-hander pitched five scoreless innings, and according to the Boston Globe they believe there is a reason. Buchholz appears return to the Sox rotation, possibly as soon as Saturday against division rival New York in the Bronx.

Our View:Buchholz is 4-1 with a 1.63 ERA in eight starts. In his last four starts, he is 4-0 with a 0.40 ERA, allowing a single earned run in 22.2 innings. Justin Masterson is 4-2 with a 3.75 ERA in eight starts but has walked nine batters over 12 innings in his last two starts. Manager Terry Francona is concerned about how many innings his 23-year-old has thrown professionally.
June 10, 2008
Clay Buchholz is working to improve his arm slot and the consistency with his fastball. The right-hander worked three innings (73 pitches) on Monday night and focused on throwing his heater. "He can be special," manager Terry Francona informs The Providence Journal. "He's healthy. He has a few things we would like him to work on. He can get frustrated, but we're not frustrated."

Our View:It's always interesting to see how young pitchers react when they run into major league trouble after cruising through the minors. This is a tough period for Buchholz and his fantasy owners, but we continue to have some faith in the talented youngster.
May 31, 2008
Clay Buchholz has been activated from the DL, and optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket, where he had been on a rehab assignment, according to the AP. Buchholz was placed on the disabled list back on May 14 with a torn nail on his right middle finger.

Our View:Manager Terry Francona said he wanted Buchholz to work on his command, fastball consistency and his arm slot while in Triple-A. He was 2-3 over eight starts with Boston this season, with a 5.53 ERA and poor 1.63 WHIP.
May 27, 2008
Clay Buchholz is scheduled for his next rehab start on Friday, according to the Boston Globe. Manager Terry Francona would not comment on his progression, but said he won't likely be headed to the bullpen, and there may be a spot in the rotation when he is healthy enough to return to Boston. Francona said, "Working on a little bit of getting away from his head to try to create some movement with his fastball. He had that arm slot when he signed. Just trying to get some consistency with that. Take advantage of these innings when he's not here. But he sounded real upbeat."

Our View:Buchholz threw four innings plus one batter on Sunday for Triple-A Pawtucket in his first rehab start since landing on the DL with a broken nail on his right middle finger. He gave up one run on three hits and two walks.
May 25, 2008
The Red Sox report RHP Clay Buchholz pitched four-plus innings this evening in a rehab start for Triple-A Pawtucket, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:Buchholz has been on the DL since May 13th with a torn nail on his middle finger. The team reports he allowed one run on three hits with three strikeouts and two walks in this outing this evening, topping out at 96 mph on the radar gun. The team did not comment on his pending return, though things look to be progressing nicely.
May 22, 2008
Clay Buchholz will begin a rehab assignment for Triple-A Pawtuckett on Sunday, according to the Boston Globe. He is recovering from a torn fingernail.

Our View:Buchholz was 2-3 with a 5.53 ERA and 1.63 WHIP over eight starts. He held his most fantasy value with 43 strikeouts over 42.1 innings, but was weak in the other major stat categories, and does not merit starting consideration as a fantasy performer when he comes back.
May 14, 2008
The Red Sox have placed Clay Buchholz on the 15-day DL due to a torn fingernail on his right middle finger, the Boston Globe reports.

Our View:We're not yet sure how the Sox will fill the gap in the rotation, and we'll be on the lookout for news about that situation. We imagine the club might make more roster moves in the coming days.
May 13, 2008
Despite recent struggles, Clay Buchholz will still make is scheduled start on Sunday, according to the Boston Herald. Bucchholz has also been dealing with an issue with his nail on his right middle finger, but it's not believe to be serious.

Our View:On ESPN's broadcast of Buchholz last start, there was a lot of talk of Clay not using his ample stuff in the best way seeming to indicate that he is not comfortable with his stuff (which is top shelf). Look for the Sox to monitor him closely, and if he keeps struggling like he currently is, don't be surprised to see him sent down for a while to fix what ails him.
May 12, 2008
Clay Buchholz didn't make it out of the fifth inning on Monday night and the Red Sox dropped their second straight game to the AL Central leading Twins. The right-hander allowed seven runs on eight hits, walked five and struck out four.

Our View:It was the same old story with Red Sox young right-hander. When he commands his curve ball and spots his fastball, he is nearly unbeatable. When his struggles with his control it's nearly impossible for him to be successful.
May 12, 2008
Clay Buchholz allowed five runs on 10 hits over a mere four innings in his last start against the Tigers, and will be looking to bounce back tonight as he faces the Twins in Minnesota, according to MLB.com. Buchholz is 2-2 with a 4.50 ERA and 1.47 WHIP over seven starts this season, and this will be his first career appearance against the Twins.

Our View:Buchholz holds an unfavorable ERA and a poor WHIP, but still racked up 39 strikeouts over 38 innings. Prior to his tough outing against aforementioned Detroit, Buchholz only allowed a total of three earned runs over his previous three starts. He is worth consideration as a starter for tonight.
April 26, 2008
Clay Buchholz got the loss on Saturday despite allowing only two runs on three hits in eight innings. He walked two batters and struck out nine in his complete game effort.

Our View:Buchholz’s record is unimpressive at 1-2, but he has made a successful rebound recently. Saturday’s fine outing follows up on a game in which he threw six scoreless innings. His 27/10 K/BB ratio in 28.2 innings is also extremely impressive. If he continues to pitch this well, the wins will come.
April 21, 2008
Clay Buchholz picked up his first win of the season after tossing six shutout innings against the Rangers on Monday. He allowed five hits, walked two, and struck out six. Buchholz's ERA shrunk from 6.75 to 4.79.

Our View:We've always said Clay pitched best before noon. Just kidding. The youngster obviously took advantage of the Rangers sleeping bats, and hopefully Buchholz can keep it up.
April 16, 2008
Clay Buchholz failed to last even four innings against the Yankees as he permitted eight hits and one walk which leg to seven runs for the Yankees.

Our View:Mama said there would be days like this. Buchholz has a bright future and made some great pitches tonight, but he also left too many balls over the middle of the plate and was only able to pick up two K on the night.
April 11, 2008
Clay Buchholz dominated the Yankees holding them to one run in six innings on Friday. Buchholz allowed four hits and three walks on the day while picking up three K. Clay now holds a 3.27 ERA through two starts on the young season.
April 5, 2008
RHP Clay Buchholz suffered through a rough outing against the Toronto Blue Jays today, but the relief pitching is what cost the Red Sox a shot at competing, falling 2-10. Buchholz threw 89 pitches through a short five innings of work, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits. Buchholz had his arm working, striking out seven and walking just two, but the offense failed to materialize in his support and the relief pitching, namely Kyle Snyder and Bryan Corey (giving up SIX runs on the next 30 pitches), was an utter disaster.
March 30, 2008
Clay Buchholz had another rough outing against the Dodgers on Sunday as he allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits over three innings of work, with three walks and five strikeouts. He ended spring training with a 1-3 record and a dismal 10.03 ERA.
March 22, 2008

March 18, 2008
Clay Buchholz pitched four hitless innings, struck out three and walked one in a start for the Pawtucket Red Sox, according to the Providence Journal. It was Buchholz's best spring performance. The young right-hander has given up three home runs this spring and had an ERA well over nine runs coming into the contest.
March 9, 2008
Clay Buchholz will spend his Sunday bullpen session trying to correct a mechanical problem, the arching of his back, which is something that he's worked on since signing with the Red Sox, according to the Boston Globe. "As your foot gets too far away from your body, there's a counterbalancing effect that has to take place," pitching coach John Farrell said. "As the foot gets further away from the body, that leg lift has the tendency to push the shoulders back. So the thought being that you get his foot underneath his lead knee, that will allow him to stay a little more upright and direct as he drives to home plate." Farrell admitted that Buchholz may be dealing with nerves, too. That's understandable, considering the expectations that have followed last year's no-hitter. He may begin the season in the minors, but he'll be pitching for the Sox sooner or later.
March 2, 2008
Clay Buchholz didn't have his best stuff Sunday, as he allowed four runs on five hits and a walk in two frames. Buchholz is the favorite for the No. 5 spot in the Red Sox rotation if Bartolo Colon isn't ready at the beginning of the year, but he'll need to get better.
February 13, 2008
The Red Sox plan to limit Clay Buchholz's innings this year. "We had a target number of innings before the season started last year, which we'll have this year," pitching coach John Farrell said in the Boston Globe. "It'll certainly be an increase over the 150 innings that we targeted last year. I think it's a reasonable number to think that Clay is going to be in line for 180-190 innings, in that range. I think he's ready certainly for a full season at the major league level and he's got the talent to back that up." Buchholz will battle Julian Tavarez for the last spot in the team's rotation.
February 7, 2008
Clay Buchholz, who was shutdown in late September with a shoulder injury, continues to progress in his rehab. The young right-hander, who was 3-1 with a 1.59 ERA in four big league games last year, will be limited to 180 innings this season.
January 16, 2008
Clay Buchholz put on 10 pounds over the offseason to help prevent him from wearing down at the end of the season, according to the Boston Herald. He was shut down late last season due to shoulder fatigue. "I believe my shoulder's ready to go. It doesn’t feel fatigued anymore," he said. "I've actually been throwing a lot since the first of the year." Buchholz, who held a 1.59 ERA in four games (three starts) last season, will likely begin the 2008 season in the starting rotation.
