Newsbreakers
December 23, 2008
Don Wakamatsu stated that Jeff Clement will see regular action in 2009 with Kenji Johjima, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

Our View:Clement looks to be used as a DH on the days that Johjima is serving at catcher. Clement is a left-handed hitter while Johjima is a righty. Clement could rank as a potential sleeper for 2009, based on this news.
November 23, 2008
Jeff Clement, who had arthroscopic surgery on his knee on September 9th, has been cleared to start running and he is about two weeks away from being cleared to begin hitting off a tee, according to the Everett Herald. "He's still got to come out and see the doctor in early January, but all indications are that he'll be OK," trainer Rick Griffin said.

Our View:Clement figures to battle with Kenji Johjima for the starting spot behind the plate, though with the lack of offense that the club currently possesses it is possible that Clement will also see time at first base and DH. Keep an eye on how the situation plays out as Clement would have a whole lot of value if he could put up 400+ AB in 2009.
September 7, 2008
Clement will miss the remainder of the season, as he is scheduled to undergo arthroscopic knee surgery on Tuesday to repair tears in the cartilage of his left knee.

Our View:The good news is that he should be back in action in four weeks, so it should not impact his off-season program. Still, this is a blow for Clement owners who have benefitted from his batting average and RBIs lately.
September 2, 2008
After a nice August in which he hit over .300, Seattle backstop Jeff Clement started September where he had left off in July, going 1-for-4 with three strikeouts in the Mariners 6-4 loss to Texas. His average is now at .228.

Our View:Clement has shown little reason, other than one good month, to show he can be an effective contributor to fantasy leagues.
August 22, 2008
Jeff Clement has raised his batting average from .165 to .220, and is third among major league rookies with a .358 average in the month of August, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. He credits his surge to seeing more pitches and he said, "Obviously it's a conscious decision to take more pitches and see the ball more, but I don't think you can do that unless you're comfortable. If you're uncomfortable, you're still going to be up there hacking at everything, and I still find myself doing that in some at-bats and being too aggressive. But as long as I try to stay back and see the ball go deep, I have more success than when I don't."

Our View:He is actually hitless over his last three games, but could prove to be a good sleeper for AL-only leagues down the stretch.
July 27, 2008
Jeff Clement missed another game Saturday due to the bruised nail on his right thumb, according to the Seattle Times.

Our View:He cannot throw the ball properly due to the ailment, and will remain out until the pain in the area subsides.
July 23, 2008
The Seattle Times indicates that Jeff Clement won't be able to serve as a catcher until at least Friday after tearing the nail off his right thumb during action on Tuesday.

Our View:If he is part of your mix in AL-only leagues, the team indicated he may still be able to pinch hit if needed.
July 13, 2008
Rookie catcher Jeff Clement hit a two-run home run helping the Mariners to a 4-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday afternoon. The home run broke an 0-for-15 slump that had dropped his average to .159 in 107 at-bats.

Our View:Clement will see plenty of at-bats in the second half of the season as the M's begin a rebuilding process after a disappointing '08 campaign.
July 6, 2008
Jeff Clement had a big night on Saturday with two home runs including one in the bottom of the eighth inning to provide the difference in the Mariners 3-2 victory over the Tigers.

Our View:Clement has been getting his chance to play over Kenji Johjima of late, but this was one of the few times that he has stepped with any type of performance. The team says they are behind him playing almost every day the rest of the way, and given his prodigious minor league production he certainly could be a nice addition at the catchers position in mixed leagues.
June 30, 2008
Acting manager Jim Riggleman did not say that Jeff Clement was the Mariners' number one catcher, but he did indicate that he will see more action behind the plate, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Riggleman said, "Clement is probably going to get more time behind the plate in the immediate future than Johjima does. When we get back in the AL, hopefully we can keep them both getting their at-bats. Clement is not here to catch every third day or something. He's going to get some significant time to see what we have there."

Our View:Clement has two multi-hit games over his last five, and hit a homer last night against the Padres at PETCO Park. He merits attention in AL-only leagues if you need help at the position.
June 22, 2008
Seatte failed to get the offense going today, taking the 8-3 loss to the Atlanta Braves. While the Mariners suffered catcher Jeff Clement enjoyed a rare day of proficiency at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and his first home run of the season, totali two RBIs and one run scored.

Our View:These are the first hits Clement has posted this month, also posting his first RBIs since May 16th.
June 19, 2008
The Jeff Clement watch continues. The rookie's return to the Seattle lineup on Wednesday night had mixed results. He was hitless in two official at bats, dropping his average to .160 in 50 at-bats.

Our View:However, the catcher walked twice, which is more noteworthy than if he had recorded two hits. Clement had walked only seven times in his 15 earlier games with the parent club. A rookie that takes walks offers evidence of good things to come.
June 18, 2008
Manager John McLaren said Tuesday that Jeff Clement "is going to catch a lot" and "we want to see him playing." On Wednesday night the rookie is in the lineup as the starting catcher and hitting sixth in the batting order.

Our View:Kenji Johjima fantasy value has taken a huge hit with this move and with the team getting ready to make a three game National League road trip there will be very few at bats for the Japanese import.
June 18, 2008
Manager John McLaren has basically handed the starting catcher job over to Jeff Clement. When asked if Clement will start three out of every five games, McLaren tells the Seattle Times, "That, or more."

Our View:Clement struggled in his earlier call-up this year, but the Mariners are beginning to look to the future and Jeff is a high-end prospect. Johjima is hitting only .224, and this news sinks his lagging value. Clement has batted .337 with a 1.137 during his Triple-A time (47 games) and is worth a look.
June 17, 2008
Jeff Clement has been recalled from Triple-A Tacoma, according to the Seattle Times. Wladimir Balentien was sent back to Tacoma to make room on the roster.

Our View:Manager John McLaren did not call him up to ride the pine, and noted that the offense needs some "pop." He was only given 48 at-bats in his previous stint with the Mariners, but it looks like he will be more involved this time around. He only hit .167 earlier, but his average could go up with more consistent time at the plate, and is worth a look in AL-only leagues if you need help at catcher.
May 22, 2008
Jeff Clement hit his second home run in three games since being demoted by the Mariners over the weekend.

Our View:Clement should make it back to the majors this season as a regular, but of course with as poorly as the organization has been run recently, anything can happen.
May 19, 2008
The Mariners optioned catcher Jeff Clement back to Triple-A Tacoma. The prospect, who was called up late last month recorded 56 plate appearances before heading back to Triple-A. Jose Vidro will resume his role as the Mariners' everyday designated hitter despite a season-long 558 OPS that's barely better than the 536 mark that got Clement demoted after three weeks.

Our View:While Clement has little left to prove in the minors this move comes as no surprise. The prospect needs to play everyday and there is no clear cut path for that to happen, not with the current players on the Mariners roster.
May 18, 2008
Jeff Clement was sent back to Triple-A Tacoma on Sunday after batting .167 with 20 K in 48 AB for the Mariners, according to MLB.com. "That's probably the most disappointing thing, is that I didn't just stick to what had made me successful before," said Clement.

Our View:The Mariners will likely turn to power-hitting stud Jose Vidro to fill the DH role for the time being. Oh yeah, Vidro is hitting .207 with two home runs in 116 AB. Is that type of production worthy of a starting spot over one of the team's best young hitters?
May 8, 2008
Jeff Clement went 0-for3 from the DH spot before being pinch hit for as his average has fallen to .130 over 23 AB with the Mariners.

Our View:About the only thing keeping Clement in the big leagues right now might be the potential loss of Richie Sexson who is dealing with personal issues. Clement has 11 K in his 23 AB and clearly appears to be overmatched at this stage of his young career.
May 2, 2008
Jeff Clement is in the starting lineup for the second straight night. The left-handed hitter has a tough test tonight against Chien-Ming Wang who is in top form.

Our View:Clement has only three official at-bats in his first two games with one hit and a walk to his credit.
May 1, 2008
Jeff Clement will start at catcher while Kenji Johjima sits out the next two games to take a "mental break", according to the Seattle Times. Clement was recently called up from Triple-A Tacoma, and registered a hit in his first (and only) at-bat of the season.

Our View:Clement will fill in for Johjima, who is struggling with a .177 average, and could see time at the DH spot as well, as Jose Vidro is hitting poorly with a .211 average. Clement will get chances to play and is worth a look if you need help, namely if you drafted Johjima to be your starter. Clement has more offensive upside than Johjima and Vidro.
April 30, 2008
Jeff Clement has been called up from Triple-A Tacoma, according to the AP. The team cut outfielder Brad Wilkerson to make room on the roster.

Our View:Clement could see time at catcher, and would likely spend time at DH over Jose Vidro as well. Vidro is only hitting .209 over 91 at-bats.
April 29, 2008
The team is reportedly close to calling up catcher Jeff Clement from Triple-A Tacoma, according to the Seattle Post Intelligencer. The Mariners are gravely struggling to score runs, and Clement currently holds a .384 batting average, a .685 slugging percentage, with seven doubles, five homers and 19 RBIs in 73 at-bats over 22 games at Tacoma.

Our View:He would potentially replace Jamie Burke as the backup catcher on the roster, and would likely spend time at DH over Jose Vidro as well. Vidro is only hitting .195 over 87 at-bats.
April 16, 2008
Jeff Clement hit his third home run of the season on Tuesday night, and he is now hitting .419 for the season after going 2-for-5 for Triple-A Tacoma.

Our View:Are Jose Vidro and Richie Sexson looking over their shoulders yet? Neither is having a particularly productive offensive season yet, and it would not be shocking if the Mariners made a switch at some point if the current pattern continues.
March 20, 2008
Former first round pick Jeff Clement has been cut by the Mariners, according to the Seattle Times. He was sent down to Triple-A but could return at some point this season. He only had three hits in 19 at-bats this spring.
February 15, 2008
If Jeff Clement doesn't win the everyday job behind the plate, he'll likely begin the year at Triple-A. "We won't carry Jeff Clement as an extra catcher," manager John McLaren said in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. "If we carry him, it's got to be as an everyday player. With his talent, there's too high a ceiling for him. He needs to play." McLaren did say that Clement is capable of beating out Jose Vidro for the DH job, and with Kenji Johjima cemented at catcher, that would be the only way he'll make the opening day roster. The team isn't considering moving Clement to first base. "With his bat, he could DH," the manager said, referring to Clement. "We're very happy with Vidro as our DH and with Kenji as our catcher. But we like surprises, too." Johjima is a free agent after this season, and Clement is in line to take over for him in '09. We don't see the talented youngster being a fantasy contributor until then, but crazier things have happened.
