Dusty Ryan is improving his bid to be the Tigers' No. 2 catcher for 2009, according to the Detroit Free Press. In Sunday's opener of the doubleheader against the White Sox, Ryan made a positive impression, as he displayed his strong arm when he threw out both runners who tried to steal against him. In his first start against Minnesota, Ryan collected his first career home run.

Our View:The pitching staff has been pleased with his intelligence and like throwing to him. He also has emerging power as a hitter, which will make him a top candidate for the primary backup job next season.

The Tigers will add catcher Dusty Ryan when the rosters expand to 40 on Monday, MLive.com reports. Ryan, who turns 24 on Tuesday, hit .269-17-62 over 100 games between Double-A and Triple-A this year.

Our View:The Tigers traded away Ivan Rodriguez and should have an opening at catcher heading into the offseason. Hopefully they give Ryan a chance to show his skills this September. We don't suggest picking him up, but he may be worth keeping an eye on.
