September 28, 2008 Pirates' GM Neal Huntington stated that the Pirates will not be "big players" in free agency, but noted that they will be looking for a power bat, a starting pitcher, and a setup reliever (likely a righty), according to the Our View:Trading Jack Wilson would free up $7.25 million. Team president Frank Coonelly stated two weeks ago that the budget for major league payroll will rise from the current $54 million, but he stressed that does not mean the number will be filled just to be filled. |

August 19, 2008 The Pirates got just enough hits and more than enough runs to pull the 4-1 win over St. Louis, thanks in large part to the efforts of RHP Ian Snell. Snell pitched seven innings of shutout baseball, allowing just four hits and one walked powered by eight strikeouts. Our View:Snell improves to 5-10 on the season with a 5.60 ERA. He has registered just two wins since April 12th before this evening, though he has allowed just nine earned runs over his last four starts. |
