Playing for Keeps

I have this natural distrust for pitchers in fantasy baseball. I am always looking for a reason to pass on a pitcher or trade one that I own, as I consider all of them ticking time bombs waiting to break my heart in the pennant stretch of the season. We all likely have our own list of horror stories where we lost Randy Johnson late in the year or cringed in horror as Dustin McGowan and Erik Bedard went down this year or when John Lackey and Scott Kazmir started the season with elbow troubles. I became a large pessimist with pitchers after watching the Mets destroy Generation K in the early 90's. I saw Paul Wilson pitch both in high school and in college and thought he would be a great major league pitcher. Once he went down with injury that was later accredited to his workload as did Jason Isringhausen and Bill Pulsipher, I became a pessimist. After all, I had invested quite a nice chunk of change on blocks of their baseball cards thinking these guys would allow me to turn a nice profit once they hit it big in the majors. I have had my own personal arm troubles after taking my arm for granted throwing everything hard all the time whether from the mound or from the left side of the infield or from the quarterback position. Two shredded labrums later, I just hope that I can play catch with my son relatively pain-free in the coming years.
