The ribs play a very important role in our bodies by protecting underlying organs. We have 24 of them, 12 on each side. The "top" 10 pairs attach to the thoracic spine and then attach directly the sternum. The last two pairs are known as "floating ribs" and attach only to the thoracic spine. Ribs protect structures in the chest as well as the abdomen. Often, a rib fracture is associated with underlying damage to the structures they are designed to protect. A lower rib fracture on the left side of the body can be associated with an injury to the spleen. Rib fractures in the chest can be associated with contusions to the lung or even a pneumothorax.Associate Editor
