The umbilical cord on the 2008-09 NHL season has barely been sliced and already the goaltender carousel has begun spinning. In the first week of the current campaign, 55 different netminders have strapped on the pads and crouched between the pipes. Of that total, only three are considered rookies under NHL rules and two made their NHL debut in the opening week of the schedule. Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers, who was kept on the Edmonton Oilers’ 23-man roster as a third-string goalie only because he couldn’t be sent to the minors without passing through waivers, was introduced to NHL action when he started the opening salvo of a home-and-home scuffle against inter-province rival Calgary. Deslauriers turned in a solid, often spectacular performance as the Oilers flowed over the Flames by a 4-3 score to remain undefeated through the first three matches of the 2008-09 schedule. Mathieu Garon returned to the Oilers’ cage in the back-end of the Highway 2 tussle and kicked aside 31 Calgary salvos to keep the Oilers’ loss column empty.Associate Editor
